This is not a discussion about whether or not the Sisters were a Goth band. This is a poll to weigh the greatness of their inarguably finest long player.

I'm going with "Marian (Version)", personally.

It's "Nine While Nine", fules. "(Amphetamine) Logic" and "Some Kind of Stranger" very close seconds.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 8 December 2007 14:10 (sixteen years ago) link

(I had to move oop North to understand what "Nine while nine" meant.)

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 8 December 2007 14:12 (sixteen years ago) link

(care to enlighten us?)

StanM, Saturday, 8 December 2007 15:12 (sixteen years ago) link

while = until, so nine while nine is akshully nine minutes to nine. I think that's what it means in the song now.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 8 December 2007 15:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I go with "Walk Away," the lead single, but consider the album a pretty big falling-off after the AMAZING run of singles that had preceded it - Reptile House EP, Anaconda, Temple of Love, , Alice/Floorshow, Body Electric (didn't that have "Train" on it? awesome): during that period the Sisters of Mercy were fucking untouchable. You couldn't even have polls about these EPs, they all just ruled from start to stop.

I think side 2 of First and Last is the equal of any of those but in a different, more epic way. Side 1, which is Hussey's side as I remember, is good enough but nowhere near great.

Noodle Vague, Saturday, 8 December 2007 15:20 (sixteen years ago) link

J0hn D. OTM - even though I love F&L&A, Floodland and Gift

(thx, Noodle! I expected it would mean something more obscure than that)

Another "Marian (Version)" here.

LeRooLeRoo, Saturday, 8 December 2007 18:03 (sixteen years ago) link

'Walk Away' then 'Nine While Nine', but neither is 'Alice', alack.

MaggieGo, Sunday, 9 December 2007 05:33 (sixteen years ago) link

"Black Planet" is great too. The instrumental track on that was originally intended by Hussey for "Dance on Glass"!

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 9 December 2007 05:56 (sixteen years ago) link

i like floodland more BUT this album rules also and i vote "marian"

impudent harlot, Sunday, 9 December 2007 06:38 (sixteen years ago) link

I havent listened to this album in probably 15 years, so I'm just going with "Marian (Version)" because Alex did (and I don't remember ANY of these songs).

Is there a Floodland poll?

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 9 December 2007 06:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I haven't heard Marian in over a decade--maybe two--and I still am haunted by it.

Marian.

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 9 December 2007 22:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Hear it again right now.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 10 December 2007 00:29 (sixteen years ago) link

man, "marian" first and last and forevermore - the german part is simultaneously ridiculous and 100% eerie and affecting

pretzel walrus, Monday, 10 December 2007 01:07 (sixteen years ago) link

NWN here, more for happy memories of friends picking out the intro in a flat in leicestershire than the tune itself.

koogs, Monday, 10 December 2007 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link

definitely Nine While Nine

this album is beyond classic

Siegbran, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:21 (sixteen years ago) link

"marian" for me too with 'some kind of stranger" a close second. great, great memories of seeing them touring this album. or rather not seeing them as there was so much dry ice. the production on the album is kind of horrible though.

stirmonster, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

It's since-been re-mastered, and you CAN hear a difference!

Alex in NYC, Monday, 10 December 2007 16:55 (sixteen years ago) link

Marian

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 10 December 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah Marian here too, though "No Time to Cry" is up there for me.

Trayce, Monday, 10 December 2007 21:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Some Kind of Stranger closely followed by Nine While Nine then Amphetamine Logic and Marian.

John D otm re the EPs.
