A little time ago, I would have gone for "Sebastian". But "Mr. Raffles" has slowly snuck upon me as the pop masterpiece that it is, and I now consider that one his best moment.

Ah, I got a "hits of the early seventies" 3CD set cheap, and it reminded me of Judy Teen, and how good it sounded.

I have "Sebastian" the single, actually I think that was the b-side really, or at least originally. "The show's on parade" i remember more.

I'm voting Judy Teen based on the fact that it appeared on none of the proper albums. Not a bad song at all, either.

I'm going for Mr Soft, especially since the B side 'Such a Dream' is great. Mr Soft was used in the UK for a candy advert which made me think that other people were hearing a different song, surely its quite a nasty song, with Harley's 'persona' being decidedly creepy?

I was also going to to moan that the title tracks of their albums weren't singles and so I couldn't vote for Psychomodo - or even suggest we need a non single a-side poll, but you've got Loves a Prima Donna listed, which I didn't think was the single, though I'm sure you're right.

I'm voting Judy Teen based on the fact that it appeared on none of the proper albums.

It is now added as a bonus track to the current version of their debut though, improving the original album lots that way.

ARE YOU FACKIN' TELLING ME THERE IS A CD VERSION THAT I CAN BUY OF THEIR FIRST ALBUM NOW??? I LOOKED FOR THAT FOR AGES IN LIKE 1996 and 2003! I ripped my vinyl copy to CD. I cherish that thing a lot, especially the sleeve which I really like.

ARRRGH! THERE *IS* A CD NOW THAT I CAN BUY, WITH THE TWO EXTRA TRACKS! THANK YOU ILM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know how these polls go. A load of people conspicuously big up the more obscure tracks, and then the really famous one waltzes away with it. In this case, with good reason.

Is there really more than one really famous track by Steve Harley then?
OK, so I guess that one will win, and it's a great song. But he had a few that were better. :)

When I was young we'd listen to his Greatest Hits in the car, and MMS(CUASM), although buried right in the middle of that record, was one of my favourites even then. I was completely oblivious to the fact it's by far his most famous song. A good number of the others are superb as well, mind. If they were included in this poll, 'Tumbling Down', 'Mad Mad Moonlight', 'Riding The Waves (With Virginia Woolf)' and 'The Psychomodo' would all receive consideration.

Mr Soft scared me as a child. I associated it with a scary clown picture my scary grandmother had hanging on her wall. So, there's my vote even though I haven't heard it for about 30 years. However, I have heard about 3000 bad cover versions of Make Me Smile, which has kind of killed off the original somewhat.

I don't think I've heard any other version other than the Erasure one, which I like.

Steve Harley's favourite one was by The Wedding Present. His least fav was Duran Duran's.

Did he even mention liking covers of his other songs like The Psychomodo?

"Make Me Smile" is more of a hooky hit single, but I'm going for the creepy, crazed melodrama of "Sebastian." Being American, the very idea that there even WERE radio stations playing "You oh so gay with Parisian demands" (and r-r-rolling the R!)as a pop hit seemed like the most bizarre thing ever.

Dan Peterson, Monday, 26 November 2007 20:54 (sixteen years ago) link

I have to vote for Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me). One of my favourite songs ever.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 26 November 2007 21:06 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't remember "Sebastian" getting any radio play.

I do remember "Judy Teen" getting tons. First it was Radio Luxembourg, then Radio 1. Then it was released.

I had no idea Mr. Pfunkboy leant in such directions! Excellent.

So "I Believe (Love's a Prima Donna)" was his greatest single to receive zero votes then.

What do you mean, "So"? That's your opinion, right? "So" doesn't enter into it.

Mark G, Friday, 30 November 2007 00:18 (sixteen years ago) link

one year passes...

I don't know if I'm feeling "Make Me Smile," though it was put to good use in Velvet Goldmine. For my mix I'm considering Mr. Raffles, Death Trip, Ritz, Bed in the Corner and Tumbling Down.
