I think Arc/Weld by Neil Young was on three discs, if it counts as a single album. It was sold as one initially, anyway.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

Carla Bley, et. al.--Escalator Over the Hill

ellaguru, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness is a triple LP in its vinyl form (with a way different running order and a couple songs not on the double CD version).

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 12:40 (eighteen years ago)

Is "69 Love Songs" available on vinyl? If so, it would have to take up 4, maybe 5 discs.

Jazzbo, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)

Half Japanese - Half Gentlemen/Not Beasts

dad a, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

I was just going to say that one, funnily enough...

Arc/Weld was live, right?

Mark G, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

I can hardly imagine anything but either "Sandinista" or "69 Love Songs" winning this.

Oh, and, btw. Voted "triple" although "albums!" is also a serious contender ;)

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

all things must pass will walk with this! even though the end of it (the jams) are useless

akm, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

I think the definition of a triple album is kinda unclear... Is it only albums that are three on vinyls? Do four-vinyl albums count? What about albums released in the CD era, which are triple on vinyl but double on CD?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

xxpost I don't understand how anyone could vote triple, this is albums! in a walk.

dad a, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)

acid mothers temple - do whatever you want etc

electricsound, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)

Agree with Tuomas that this is a bit unclear. If a triple album is supposed to be triple on CD today, then only "69 Lovesongs" and "Emancipation" count.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

Tom Waits: Orphans--Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards

It's in a weird middle ground because it's ostensibly an archives collection, but the songs are of way better quality than outtakes, and it was marketed as a regular studio album. I think it should be included.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

I think anything that's ever been a triple album in any format should be eligible, if only because there aren't a whole lot of notable triple albums by any definition. Except maybe it'd be good to disqualify compilations disgnated as "box sets," and live albums, which would saddle us with a whole lot of jam bands.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

That definitely comes into the "archives" category.

A little clarification:
3 discs (LP or CD)
All new, contemporary material.

This sort of means that some of the Zappa ones may well not qualify, and maybe not the Crystal Ball Prince one (I don't know for sure)

Mark G, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

Ah, advice here. I feel it to be a double album, but then I don't got one...

Mark G, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, you're probably right. I was just throwing it out there since I think it'd be more interesting with more than a dozen candidates.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Will the Circle be Unbroken

The guy who just votes in polls, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

Another live triple: How The West Was Won by Led Zeppelin.

I could've sworn that the Basement Tapes was a triple as well, but I am told not.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 15:15 (eighteen years ago)

(I'm assuming that live collections means that single gigs are OK - though both of my nominations might actually be several-gigs-strung-together, come to think)

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

OK, clarification: I do mean live gigs. There are loads of "Dicks Picks" that centre on one Grateful Dead gig each. So, they do not count.

Mark G, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

Does this count?

Ltd Ed double album with bonus 12" of b-sides.

(also £50 looks good value for a sealed one of those)

Um, no.

"acid mothers temple - do whatever you want etc"
This is a collection, one of the discs features nothing but artists OTHER than the Acid Mothers Temples. But one that would count is Magical Power from Mars as it was originally released as three separate discs. Nevermind that it was reissued on one cd. Actually, fuck this poll.

This is too hard - what about a sesquialbums poll?

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

Grateful Dead, Europe '72 should count, it's at least 3/4 songs that had not previously appeared on a Dead album, most of those original, and 3/4 of the tracks on each cut were probably studio re-records anyway.

"Original material"? Hm! That'd depend -- on how original one considers another Keith Jarrett concert to be. ;)

t**t, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Will the Circle be Unbroken

^^^^a top tier contender. Between this and All Things Must Pass for me. (To its credit, third disc is not just a bunch of long jams, even tho I like the Apple Jam record)

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Just checked and the only triple album I've got is the soundtrack album for "Thank God It's Friday" which is pretty damn good. The third disc is actually a twelve inch single (Donna Summer's 20-odd minute version of "Je T'aine") so that would disqualify it maybe.

Drew, o Drew -- to ban ILM, because of a 3 LP boxset, 4 Ever? Ain't that a teenybit weenybit out of proportion?

I was hoping someone would nominate that one! Second Winter (2LPs, 3 sides) was allowed on the double LP poll, so there's precendent of a sort for a 5-sided triple LP.

nickalicious, Thursday, 25 October 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

xpost:
OK, admittedly the Mingering Mike is a bit of a stretch since there's no music on it, but the sleeve does say it's three albums in one.
http://www.themorningnews.org/archives/galleries/mingering_mike/05mm.php

The Sinatra's totally legitimate though. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilogy:_Past_Present_Future

Also of arguable eligibility: Songs In The Key of Life.

If you want to argue about eligibility how about "Holland" by the Beach Boys? Two albums + one single is still a triple.

Isn't it? Oh well, what do I know? I've only got a rather scratched copy of the little single which my neighbour gave me at a yard sale.

everything, Thursday, 25 October 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

it has 9 songs on it

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 25 October 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

Fifteen if you count the single, which is three tracks more than "Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends" - a bonafide triple.

everything, Thursday, 25 October 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm. Actually "Welcome Back My Friends etc" really only has nine songs also, depending on how you look at it.

everything, Thursday, 25 October 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

9 songs on 1 LP /= double album

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 25 October 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

How about a triple set made up of a 12", a 10" and a 7"?
