so nada surf has a new song out from their forthcoming album - lucky you can hear it here: http://www.myspace.com/nadasurf
anyways,
Matthew Caws says he can't accurately describe the sound of the album because he's still not sure what songs will make the cut, but admits, "there is some hard rock, almost early '80s British metal for a couple of minutes. I don't even know if the record is going in a positive direction or a vitriolic direction. I think it's getting weirder. But then some songs sound like Tom Petty, which is a great thing if it works and a bummer if it doesn't."
Seven songs feature cello accompaniment, about which Caws marvels, "It's not cheesy and it doesn't suck the rock out, which has happened to us before."
Lucky was co-produced by the band and John Goodmanson (Death Cab For Cutie, Blonde Redhead, Sleater-Kinney). It was recorded in Seattle at Robert Lang Studios where artists like Nirvana, Death Cab for Cutie, Foo Fighters and Dave Matthews, among many others have worked in the past. Many great artists make guest appearances on the record, including Death Cab’s Ben Gibbard, Harvey Danger's vocalist Sean Nelson, Ed Harcourt, John Roderick of the Long Winters, and guitarist Phil Wandscher of Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter.

I'm hyped about this album. I'm catching them on tour this coming Monday and they should be playing new songs.
In general, nada surf can be a little too plain or simple sometimes but their pure rock sound with great harmonies, rhythms and standout tracks make it all worth it.
I do think think this show requires a certain level of drunkness.

That whole album, The Weight Is A Gift, was great. Along with the Fountains Of Wayne, the best power pop band of the 2000s.

Fountains of Wayne peaked in 1997.

When they started they were always in the shadow of Weezer. Who would have thought that they would last so much longer? And they released much more than only one good album. Great live by the way.

I would compare them to Sloan (more power pop). Yeah, I hope they are great live. MY favorite Nada surf songs are: Hi-speed soul, happy kid, fruit fly, blonde on blonde, and blizzard of 77. There are some others, but I forget the names.
