Before buying a Rap record, do you ever check out the lyrics on the net to find out if the rapper is worth supporting?

I don't think that can really be measured from lyrics alone. There are too many variables involved. Plus, it's a bit like reading spoilers.

beats, flow, etc are pretty important
there are a lot of great songs whose lyrics don't look that impressive on paper

Ol' Dirty Bastard was - correct me if I'm wrong - a better vocalist than he was a lyricist. Plus he had RZA. But he was singular, with or without RZA. 20 minutes ago I checked out the lyrics to a handful of songs from T.I.'s critically-acclaimed KING. T.I. lacks the originality of ODB, obviously, as a vocalist and as a lyricist. Most rappers do. Most vocalists of any genre do.
