moving to london

so anyway, moved to a flat in camden a couple of weeks ago, thought it would be better for my music career to be part of the "scene". my friend tarquin needed a new bassist for his band "the costellos" so, here i am. my dad sorted my out my the place, a rehearsal room, bought me some furniture and musical equipment: a fender jazz bass and a marshall amp, not to mention a strat so i can work on my songwriting.

problem is: dad's only hooking me up with £600 a week, after rent bills, etc.. not really enough to live the rock and roll lifestyle, keep up with the latest fashions and keep a girlfriend in tow, it's really unfair.

so could anyone sort us out with some gigs? you get well paid for them, right?

our drummer went to boarding school with a couple of guys from the horrors, so they might be able to help out, but the music biz is a tough game and any help at all would be appreciated.

Troll impersonating poor troll for trolling purposes. Shit.

Posh people be being called Tarquin

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 18 October 2007 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

i always wondered why people go to such elaborate trouble to "pretend" they're a twat. why not spend the same amount of energy pretending to be funny and engaging and insightful?

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 18 October 2007 11:33 (eighteen years ago)

so, no gigs?
guess you guys aren't really players in the music scene, then.

max r, Thursday, 18 October 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

if they were, why would they be offering you a gig?

electricsound, Thursday, 18 October 2007 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

max r it's a shame you took it this far. you were very convincing leading up to this (though the "black music / white music" thread was a bit too perfect)

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 18 October 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

Marcello, right?

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 18 October 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

Dunno if Marcy could have gone this far without wishing AIDS on someone, tho.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 18 October 2007 11:53 (eighteen years ago)

what on earth are you talking about?

max r, Thursday, 18 October 2007 11:54 (eighteen years ago)

I think Marcello would have given it a bit more effort than "Tarquin" and "boarding school with The Horrors"

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 18 October 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

what - no plug for a myspace page ?

mark e, Thursday, 18 October 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

marcello is the guy from 1965 records, right?

perhaps we could hook up.

max r, Thursday, 18 October 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

1965 are surely going for some record as the worst label ever to exist, with each bleeding horrible record they continue to put out

electricsound, Thursday, 18 October 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

679 still worse

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 18 October 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

no way. i really like the m craft and zillions cds that came out on 679

electricsound, Thursday, 18 October 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

Some dude involved in 1965 gave me a sampler CD before I'd ever heard of it, let alone before The View, and it was pretty good! Strange label tho yeah

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 18 October 2007 12:08 (eighteen years ago)

i like the law but they were dropped before they released anything. a bullet dodged (for the band amirite)

three years pass...

So it looks like I'm moving to London (for an MA at UCL) in < 4 weeks. I was there for 9 days 7 years ago, but today I'm pretty much clueless and would like to optimize my experience while sustaining my frugal grad student status.

Let's see. Re: transport. how much does a student transit pass cost? Is it better to get a used bike? (I'll be living just north of Hyde Park [in university residence; I don't have that much money]). When do subways close?

Umm I probably have more questions, including the standard record/book store recommendations.

subways close around midnight: thereafter there are night buses. if you're living just north of hyde park you're unlikely to have much trouble getting home.

can't recall the cost of a student oyster travelcard off the top of my head but it's certainly significantly cheaper than a non-student one. even if you don't get a travelcard you should get a 16-25 railcard (if you're over 25 and a student in full-time education, your institution will sign off on the form to say you're eligible), which gets you a third off all rail journeys and off public transport fares when linked to a registered oyster card. It costs something like £30 but you make that money back in savings pretty quickly.

i find cycling in london pretty scary tbh but it's certainly doable.

Sounds good, thanks! (I'm an extremely unexperienced cyclist. Chances are I won't remember to go down the left side of the road anyways).
