Love the 2007 singles (Fear of Heights, the Massacre, Handle With Care). What else is worth searching out?
― jergïns, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 01:35 (5 years ago) Permalink
you'll want to pick up last year's album, it's very good. i don't think he has more than a handful of records, though, unless he records under other names?
― lucas pine, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 02:43 (5 years ago) Permalink
yeah, this guy deserves his own thread. very versatile producer. he had some great 12"s out on Modern Love last year. and he keeps his track's short (for the most part) - refreshing in this age of the 20 minute per shminimal marathon.
― sam500, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 04:11 (5 years ago) Permalink
sorry, should read: "in this age of 20 minute shminimal marathons."
check out the 4 track Replace EP on Modern Love from last year. very deep and very nice.
the Ceramics 12" and Nervous EP also good.
― sam500, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 04:22 (5 years ago) Permalink
he's good. sifting through a bunch of stuff off little white earbuds I kept coming back to his couple of tracks. will search.
― tremendoid, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 04:25 (5 years ago) Permalink
his album merciless is well worth searching. it was one of my favorites from 06. it's in the same vein as the singles already mentioned, but it really works as an lp. it is nice and short, too. he's right up there with claro intelecto and efdemin with that louche, detroit-y, post-kompakt sound. very well-chosen palette of sounds and *bass*. i still listen to the album all of the time.
― tricky, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 16:09 (5 years ago) Permalink
has anyone heard his RA podcast yet? (with claro intelecto).

yeah it's right good. equally austere and funky.
― tremendoid, Monday, 4 February 2008 06:41 (5 years ago) Permalink
excellent, will check it after work. i love AS, not quite so taken with claro except for the 'contact' tune that ricardo used on his taka taka mix.
― sam500, Monday, 4 February 2008 06:45 (5 years ago) Permalink
this is good but maybe my expectations were too high. i blame claro intelecto
― jergïns, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 03:05 (5 years ago) Permalink
just listening to a collection of 12"s he did for modern love (+ some tracks off 'merciless') that i collated and put on a cd. so so lush - perfect for my current (exhausted) state. not exactly groundbreaking stuff but beautifully executed. like tricky said, he uses some fantastic bass sounds.
haven't been so keen on his dubbier techno excursions of late. i hope he returns to the more melodic stuff he was doing a couple of years ago.

The clips on the Juno listing for this sound amazing.
The press releases mentions the influence of guys like Actress, Jamal Moss/Hieroglyphic Being and Kassem Mosse, and judging by those snippets, this double-pack seems to be right up there with any of them.

Enjoying this new one more than Merciless, which I liked, but wasn't quite 'minimal' enough for me, if that makes sense. Also, I agree with the sentiment above about the length of these tunes. Maybe its dumb, but I really like that these albums are short.

Interstate driving, torrential rain, listening to We Stay Together and not knowing what's music and what's not. Windshield wipers sync up PERFECTLY with "Posers." Life is occasionally awesome.

this is ridiculously good
beautiful but ominous at the same time, there's this sense of dread that's at odds with the gorgeous vocals, and it creates this really cool tension

Julie Cruise stuck inside a bass drum.
I'm noticing much less ducking/sidechain compression on the two youtube clips I've seen/heard.
― ‽ Interrobang You're Dead ‽ (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 16:35 (7 months ago) Permalink
don't like the part where he says his music since passed me by has zero outside influences (yeah right), just seconds ago he was going on about how the modern love guys gave him stuff that he then copied.
the artwork has the same problem.
― freedom for parakeets (wolves lacan), Wednesday, 24 October 2012 19:27 (7 months ago) Permalink
wow this album is kind of mindblowing. i don't care what he's saying about influences (you could make all sorts of claims about what's going on here) as long as he keeps making tunes at this level of quality he gets a free pass imo
― akadarbarijava (psychgawsple), Thursday, 25 October 2012 04:52 (7 months ago) Permalink
Passed Me By/We Stay Together/Luxury Problems is a remarkable hot streak. I agree, he can talk as much nonsense as he wants!
― Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Thursday, 25 October 2012 14:06 (7 months ago) Permalink
This is good, but way uneven IMO. Some of the tracks are jaw-droppingly cool, and some fall totally flat. The vocals don't always work; in fact, I think they usually don't. They feel shoehorned in. (They're also of a style/vibe I don't really like.)
― Clarke B., Thursday, 25 October 2012 16:40 (7 months ago) Permalink
I wish the vocals always worked as well as they do on "Leaving"
― Clarke B., Thursday, 25 October 2012 16:43 (7 months ago) Permalink
But that creamy/oh-so-soft/drenched-in-reverb female vocal thing is still not my bag
― Clarke B., Thursday, 25 October 2012 16:44 (7 months ago) Permalink
this is rather wonderful. and i was thoroughly bored by his previous two albums. the vocals provide such a great contrast to the music.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 09:41 (7 months ago) Permalink
bits of this are REALLY mezzaniney
melody in "lost and found" really reminds me of something, on the tip of my tongue, agh
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 09:46 (7 months ago) Permalink
I've seen several folks praising that contrast between the vocals and the music... My question is, why would you *want* something to contrast beats that deep/dark and gritty? For me, they just distract from the kind of inarticulable graininess of the underlying tracks; they feel too much like signposts, too eager to signify.
― Clarke B., Tuesday, 30 October 2012 14:27 (7 months ago) Permalink
Because the vocals provide contrast, making the graininess noticeable even after several tracks, creating a gestalt whole that is more than the sum?
― d-_-b (mh), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 14:28 (7 months ago) Permalink
I can imagine that happening for sure (the gestalt whole that exceeds the sum), but I don't think this record achieves it... But I do also think I need to give it a little more time/effort.
― Clarke B., Tuesday, 30 October 2012 14:33 (7 months ago) Permalink
My question is, why would you *want* something to contrast beats that deep/dark and gritty
because that was what his previous albums were and i found them immensely dull
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 14:51 (7 months ago) Permalink
vocals are pretty deep dark and gritty too, to these ears
lex are you thinking of "wishing on a star"
― Crackle Box, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 14:55 (7 months ago) Permalink
Lex, for fun, you should try playing the tracks from last year's EPs at 45 RPM instead of 33... There are youtubes of some of these:
Gives them a different energy for sure.
― Clarke B., Tuesday, 30 October 2012 15:01 (7 months ago) Permalink
definitely!
tbf I think that's what shackleton does live, or at least doubles down on the beats
― d-_-b (mh), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 15:03 (7 months ago) Permalink
