poor man's OTC?

poortheatre, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 08:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I really wanted to like it but it didn't really do much for me. Wanna buy it?

everything, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 16:52 (sixteen years ago) link

the tale I always heard was that Circulatory System took the weirdo side of OTC and The Sunshine Fix took the pop side, but it's more that Circulatory System took everything and refined it a bit, and The poor poor Sunshine Fix got left with squat, innit? I don't know that it's quite on a par with either OTC album, but I like it a lot anyway.

The production is poor I thought. Too swampy.

This is not a disc you'll be taking to the old folks home with you.

I will swim agains the current miserablist tide by declaring my undying love for this great album, my maybe-favorite of 2001.

It got some great reviews at the time 9.5 on Pitchfork for example

The Circulatory System show I saw was better than the three Olivia Tremor Control shows I saw. I listen to the "remix" version of this album more than the official version.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 19:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I have a couple songs and they're good but for some reason I could never locate an actual copy of the entire album.

I'll up that - yours for free. email me.

one year passes...

Listening to this again after a long hiatus (have I ever listened to the whole thing through?) and it sounds better than expected. Some nice surprise moments and a whole lotta chimes.

I still love "Joy"

Turangalila, Sunday, 16 November 2008 21:20 (fifteen years ago) link

well, they're better than the sunshine fix, that's for damn sure.

Never heard of this band. Opened this thread thinking it was something biology related on ILE.

The whole record is amazing, and is so different in sound and mood from Olivia Tremor Control that I think the comparison is kinda facile and misleading. Much less "hey man, isn't the world just CRAZY?!" hippie-dippie wide-eyed wonder, much more "oh shit, the world is fucking CRAZY!" Lovecraftian wide-eyed terror. The chorus of "Outside Blasts" feels like watching the fabric of reality peel back and seeing that the entire universe is powered by shadowy demons shoveling coal into the furnaces of hell; the little slowdown in "The Pillow" after they sing "Just say goodbye to the world that we know" feels like time threatening to completely unravel. It's one of the few albums that I find genuinely scary.

They were great live. I bought the remixed version of the album with a spray painted jewelcase and a picture of a bird pasted on the front. It takes the "feels like time threatening to completely unravel" thing to its conclusion. It's pretty cool, but I think I prefer the actual album. Will Hart is a sweet dude.

Trip Maker, Monday, 17 November 2008 15:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I went to see them at the 40 Watt recently and one of the members (won't say who) was looking like they were going through a serious trip during the performance. Afterwards I was outside with my friend who was taking a smoke break and this guy came out, still looking like he was tripping hard, and asked us for a cigarette. His eyes had that look like he had just been through a mystical experience. Before he walked off in a daze, he said "Thanks. This band is getting really experimental..."

I was almost LOL, cos he's been in this band in one form or another for almost 10 years now.

Oh, A Hawk and a Handsaw kicks ass too.

Adam Bruneau, Monday, 17 November 2008 23:56 (fifteen years ago) link

sadly, i think the original post is OTM. they lack the adventurousness of OTC, and a good chunk of the album just doesn't sound as inspired. i admit there were some surprises when i went back and listened to it again, but those were pretty small compared to the surprises of hearing all the layers from, say, 'black foliage'

eight months pass...

"Joy" so delightfully rips off Vashti Bunyan's "Rose-Hip November" and rarely fails to make me cry. :(

new one is as boring as first one. the otc way with melody is really lacking

I really enjoyed Signal Morning and I'm someone who's never really been able to get into their first record. Not sure anyone outside of the E6 board knows (cares?), but the new one Mosaics Within Mosaics should also be out sometime in 2014.

Unfortunately a new Olivia Tremor Control album that has been put on hold. Apparently the whole album was basically recorded with Bill Doss, but since his death the rest of the band aren't ready to tackle it emotionally.

I'm the opposite - couldn't really get into Signal Morning but loved the first one (actually became kind of obsessed with it for a while). Good news about a new album though, I'm still interested to hear what they do next.

Guess what I found on youtube! The Major Organ and the Adding Machine movie! I haven't seen this yet but was a huge fan of that first record they put out.
