Kanye West (and Daft Punk too) "Stronger"

Who knew Daft Punk would become such a huge influence in 2007? I've only heard the radio rip with the DJ talking all over it, but I'm liking this a lot.

Thoughts?

oh good another song kanye can ruin for me

RIP "Move On Up" 1970-2005

deej, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 18:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Even "Touch the Sky" can't ruin the musical perfection that is "Move On Up." It just can't be done.

matt2, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 19:04 (sixteen years ago) link

This might be a no-doy, but does he sample "harder, better, faster stronger"?

Just wonderin if it was the vocoder or any elements of the original track "Cola Bottle Baby." Not trying to sound like snob, honest.

valoss, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 19:08 (sixteen years ago) link

didn't, uh, slum village do this already?

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 20:34 (sixteen years ago) link

and pharrell too

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 20:35 (sixteen years ago) link

it's just the vocoder btw, no "cola bottle baby" present. he adds some synth. i'm not kidding, it sounds just like the slum village remix + some drums ripped from "grindin"

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 20:40 (sixteen years ago) link

so a modern classic then

The Macallan 18 Year, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 20:49 (sixteen years ago) link

The Macallan 18 Year, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 20:51 (sixteen years ago) link

I think this is terrible. I know the original too well and I'm just thinking the whole time, "just rap over the whole original, or don't rap at all".

cola bottle baby >>>> vocoder bits

abanana, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 20:57 (sixteen years ago) link

haven't heard it yet but I gotta agree the concept sounds pretty played

all the stuff vahid mentioned + Busta already did a whole DP remake with "Touch It"

the most interesting part of this song is trying to figure out when he says "i'll do anything for anything for a blonde dyke / and she'll do anything for the limelight / and we'll do anything when the time's right" if he's talking about an actual celebrity or just a figment of his imagination

i also like the line "since prince was on appollonia / since OJ had isotoners / don't act like i never told you"

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 21:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Why is exposing something of such high quality (HBFS) to the masses a bad thing? Regardless of whether DP has been sampled before in hip hop, I say more sampling of Daft Punk into hip hop is always a good thing. The track could've expanded on the sample more but it ain't exactly a terrible effort by Kanye. I was expecting way worse.

He has Iron Giant jaws in that photo.

The video is definitely what made it for me, the ridiculous sunglasses and Akira quotes and so on. Same with the Zach Galifilifinikilakolus video for the other single, come to think of it; neither track is particularly strong but damn if his video directors aren't earning their paychecks.

Jordan Sargent, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:09 (sixteen years ago) link

The one thing that bugs me is the Klondike/blonde dyke line...you can just see Kanye coming up with the Klondike line, and searching in vain for something that rhymes with it.

"uh, troglodyte...third reich...tandem bike...okay, blonde dyke, I'll fit that one in somehow."

He is completely forgiven though because the Apollonia line is sheer brilliance.

musically, Saturday, 4 August 2007 22:44 (sixteen years ago) link

"stronger" vs. "ayo technology" for hip-hop single of the year.

Jordan Sargent, Sunday, 5 August 2007 17:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I didn't hate it, but something just sounded wrong about it to me...too slow, or something.

That's funny, because the dance station I listen to plays a sped up version of it that I think is terrible.

musically, Sunday, 5 August 2007 17:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I get the feeling that Kanye knows this isn't his strongest stuff. What musically says above is one indication. That this is all over the place thematically is another. I have no idea what this song's point is.

The worst part for me, though, is the line, "So go ahead go nuts go ape shit." Bravado is nothing new, but this a step too far - this makes the listener self-conscious. I'll go ape shit when I damn well feel like it, thanks.

Wookie Rookie, Sunday, 5 August 2007 22:11 (sixteen years ago) link

On July 3, 2007, West told Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 that although he believes "Stronger" is "a great song", it does not compare to the Daft Punk original.[2]

The Reverend, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 10:51 (sixteen years ago) link

three months pass...

Hahah, I also like "Come With Me" and now suspect my gradual begrudging appreciation of "Stronger" is undergirded by that same force. Apparently it's just a cycle: every ten years, hip hop's reigning producer/performer guy must sample a beloved track (with pretenses of collaborating with the original artist on an actual new recording) and inflate it to ludicrous proportions of melodrama with no actual narrative. The fans of the original track must cry out in rage but the public makes its choice.

(Actually, how successful was "Come With Me"? Surely "Stronger" was a bigger hit by an order of magnitude...)

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 8 June 2008 05:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Big difference, I can't really imagine dancing to "Come With Me" or hearing it in any context other than alt-rock radio.

I like that one line where he's like "Try and trap me - bad rap." I knew a guy in high school that was like "See?! He knows the song sucks, he even admits it! (mimes Puffy shaking his head in shame) "Bad rap."

Another great line: "I cosigned it!"
