funny farm, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 04:06 (nineteen years ago)

i'm looking forward to hearing it. and i hope it's on some next-level songs for the deaf shit. no brody = great! plus casablancas = boo!

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 06:10 (nineteen years ago)

wtf re. artwork

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 08:29 (nineteen years ago)

like the two songs that've been released on the net, Sick Sick Sick and "3s & 7s". (Hope it's low bitrate on that clip that makes the sound so crap).

the Dirt, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 09:17 (nineteen years ago)

i am lovin' "3s & 7s"

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 24 May 2007 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

\m/ - and I just noticed the fake ring-mark on the sleeve, which is a nice touch. Is that Dan Clowes?

Soukesian, Thursday, 24 May 2007 07:10 (nineteen years ago)

No, it's a drawing of a light bulb.

StanM, Thursday, 24 May 2007 07:17 (nineteen years ago)

oh. you mean... sorry.

StanM, Thursday, 24 May 2007 07:46 (nineteen years ago)

just gave this a listen. it's pretty good stuff. their most "poppy" album yet. also, the solo on the first track totally kills.

funny farm, Monday, 28 May 2007 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't think it wa that poppy. Some of the guitar sound reminded me of tracks from the latter half of the 1st album.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 28 May 2007 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

"Into the Hollow" is real nice.

Simon H., Monday, 28 May 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

That's the greatest album cover I've ever seen. The fake vinyl ringwear!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 28 May 2007 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Just as a promo copy, mind you.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 28 May 2007 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

This keeps getting better. Love how Josh Homme never disappoints me

the Dirt, Tuesday, 29 May 2007 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

I like how this album opens up. It's like a bar brawler warming up on a side of sheet metal.

WOO!

The Macallan 18 Year, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

THIS REKKID IS FUKKING GREAT SO FAR!!!!

I did not like the last one at all…only liked a few toonz on Songs for the Deaf. Five songs in, this seems up there with Rated R and the first one…

Finally, I don't find myself missing Alfredo, Nick or Grohl. I'm rooting for Homme…he's a swell dude and one that gets to do what he wants (whether I like what he does at a particular time or not) and more often than not, he makes really eccentric, tweaked, often songful and well recorded rock and roll music with awesome guitar sounds that lots of people dig . He's like the R. Kelly of rock…he's got the hot hands, but none of the pooing and pissing on little girls (at least, not that I know of)…

the Dirt, Monday, 11 June 2007 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

i liked the last one a lot better.

still, not bad.

latebloomer, Monday, 11 June 2007 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

i haven't heard this album yet. but "sick sick sick" isn't really doing it for me.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 05:50 (eighteen years ago)

'Make it wit chu' - major letdown though. The Desert Sessions version was so much better, why did they have to fuzz it down so much?

the Dirt, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 12:34 (eighteen years ago)

Come on, the new version of Make it wit chu isn't different enough to be bitter over, at least we have 2 versions to choose from now, and it's still a kickass song.

What's bullshit is the pitchfork review for this. 6.2 !? And they didn't even really justify the review, especially since they gave Lullabies 7.5 !!! Yeah, sure, Lullabies was not only a better album, but it was 1.3 times better. Gimme a fuckin' break.

Whatever though, they always have their head up their asses, preferring to give anything on a major label a bad grade while giving anything noisy, unlistenable or by a member of animal collective a 9.3

I can't wait for the 6.1 icky thump review, where they whine about it being a huge step down from get behind me satan.

Weak.

i like lullabies a whole lot more than this new one. it just rocks more.

can't wait for the 6.1 icky thump review, where they whine about it being a huge step down from get behind me satan

it is actually a giant step down.

funny farm, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

confidential to david r.: i'm totally with you on your review. but the artwork was so promising!

fukasaku tollbooth, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 02:38 (eighteen years ago)

1.3 TIMES better?

Also, what is this with the confidentiality? Sing my praises loud & shit (and with money)! (& thx, FT!)

David R., Wednesday, 13 June 2007 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

It's 1.2 times actually :-p

I'm not feeling EV, but because people whose judgement I value keep telling me it's awesome I'm going to dig in.

willem, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 06:22 (eighteen years ago)

I'd have given you that Lullabies rocks more than Vulgaris, but there is no way in HELL "Icky Thump" is a "giant step down" from "Get Behind Me Satan". That was arguably their least consistent album IMO.

Give the new one (of both bands) a few more listens, because they're the two best rock records I've heard all year (so far).

And you can only step UP from "The Nurse" and "White Moon", come on !

Erock Zombie, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 06:44 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, I loved "The Nurse"!

I think Allmusic does a pretty good job defending a good rating for EV. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:jvfyxz85ldse

the Dirt, Wednesday, 13 June 2007 10:15 (eighteen years ago)

the Allmusic review is spot-on

maybe 2-3 duds on this album, the rest is golden - esp. loving 3's and 7's this time thru

negotiable, Thursday, 14 June 2007 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

i listen to this once a day to see if i'm missing something. i'm not. david r. totally nailed this, mainly because guy gets right into the mess and drops the gratuitous 'graf that adorns pretty much anything else on the page; dude should write more for p4k; also: damn day jobs, etc. etc. [except for mine, which i really truly love now.]

[also: i thought the allmusic review was taken out of beckett's watt or something. maybe the hoff needs to come down from city pages and bust some 'grafs or something. pax?]

[i miss altweekly death watch soooo much.]

fukasaku tollbooth, Thursday, 14 June 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

Just got mine. This is just great - so full of weird noise. QOTSA always struck me as having a certain psych edge and this seems well to the fore here.

Allmusic OTM.

Soukesian, Thursday, 14 June 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

i'm liking this a lot

gman, Thursday, 14 June 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

I listened to the stream of this all day and love it. I think it's considerably better than the last one, and better than Rated R too. Don't know if it's as good as Songs for the Deaf, though. Have to listen more, but it's definitely better than I expected.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)

this and rated R are now my 2 favorite qotsa albums

gman, Friday, 15 June 2007 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

I really enjoyed this on first listen but I'm assuming I've got a dodgy rip and a couple of songs aren't supposed to pitch up and down like this.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 June 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

damn, i miss mark and nick...
ahh, well, in the eternal words of corporate america,
'it is what it is'.

edde, Friday, 15 June 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Well, y'know, Mark and Nick are still doing their own stuff, aren't they?

Soukesian, Friday, 15 June 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, well, it's not the same. the 3 headed hydra that was QotSA worked so much better for me.

I like QOTSA better without Olivieri.

That's right, I said it.

edde, Monday, 18 June 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

heard this for the first time on sunday

possible very good

Charlie Howard, Monday, 18 June 2007 09:03 (eighteen years ago)

What's the production like? Is it as mushed as SFTD?

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 18 June 2007 09:09 (eighteen years ago)

It's pretty gritty. Some might have issues with it.

the Dirt, Monday, 18 June 2007 10:13 (eighteen years ago)

Is there some belly-punch in the bottom of the bass, some synaesthesia and separation in the guitars?

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 18 June 2007 10:17 (eighteen years ago)

production's not bad, there are some really great songs on it,too.
but, overall, i'm just not as 'into it' as i was hoping i'd be.
they didn't improve on 'Make It Witchu' much, '3's+7's' has some interesting moves, so does 'Turning Of the Screw'. i'm diggin on 'Into the Hollow' a ton. i think 'Sick,Sick,Sick' needed to have a chorus dropped and i'd be into it more.

it's not a 'bad' album, just not a 'great' one.

edde, Monday, 18 June 2007 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

Still listening to this, and there's a lot going on. 'Battery Acid' has a deranged quality about it that makes me think of some forgotten piece of post-punk primitivism.

Soukesian, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

I hope more album covers do the "ring wear" thing. Of course, it will eventually be copied by shitty bands, but until then I'm all for it.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

The middle eight, if you can call it a middle eight, in the opening track is FUCKING INCREDIBLE.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

Man, this is GREAT at 4th listen. Weird how all reviews seem to focus on "Into the Hollow" and "3's & 7's" though, they're the most standard QOTSA songs on there (although "3's" is wonderful). Top tracks at the mo: "Sick, sick, sick", "I'm Designer", "Misfit Love" (what a fucking awsome intro!).

the Dirt, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

"Suture up your future" sounds like it's taken from a Silent Hill game

the Dirt, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)

is 3's & 7's going to be released as a U.S. single?

gman, Thursday, 21 June 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

No One Knows.

the Dirt, Friday, 22 June 2007 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

I take back what I said about "Make it wit 'chu". May still like the DS version better, but this one's not bad at all. And I love how it ends with that great intro for "3'2 & 7's"!

the Dirt, Friday, 22 June 2007 09:49 (eighteen years ago)

six months pass...

So what was the conlcusion on his one? Is ith their pop album?

baaderonixx, Thursday, 27 December 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

It's a good one. Seeing them for the first time early in the New Year, looking forward to it.

Soukesian, Thursday, 27 December 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

two months pass...

Just listening to this for the first time. Really digging it, it's incredibly taut.

chap, Thursday, 28 February 2008 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

Its quite underrated , probably because its not heavy enough for most fans. Mind you i'd love to see josh make heavy music again.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 28 February 2008 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

OK, second listen and it's really fucking excellent. Thoroughly modern rock n roll with as much of an ear for rhythm and texture as melody and songcraft.

chap, Thursday, 28 February 2008 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

I heard that "Make It Wit Chu" song yesterday and it was pretty awesome.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 28 February 2008 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

They were great live.

Soukesian, Thursday, 28 February 2008 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

This isn't their 'pop album', I woudn't say, not in the way Rated R was. It's perhaps got their single poppiest moment on it in Make It Wit'chu, but overall the production and guitar sound and tone is so dirty and heavy and sludgy. I really like it, more so than Songs For The Deaf. Still prefer Rated R overall, I think. I never got the previous one; is it worth bothering with?

Scik Mouthy, Friday, 29 February 2008 08:14 (eighteen years ago)

Heavy might be the wrong word. It's almost... dancey, at points, not so much in what the rhythms are as in how they're constructed?

Scik Mouthy, Friday, 29 February 2008 08:15 (eighteen years ago)

Haven't heard this in a long time, but wrt 'dancey' - maybe there's a bit of boogie in it? Carried over from Eagles of Death Metal perhaps..

willem, Friday, 29 February 2008 08:27 (eighteen years ago)

Aye. perhaps a bit of boogie. A bit of... mechanisation, as well, I think. Some of it's quite industrial, almost?

Scik Mouthy, Friday, 29 February 2008 09:11 (eighteen years ago)

I loved "3's & 7's," the first single. The chorus kind of comes out of nowhere.
