What do you mean by math rock? As in the subject of the song is math related?
Har har, very funny.
But on the off chance that you're serious -- Korcnoj means rock music with an 'angular', jagged dynamic (unusual time signatures, sudden stopping and starting, etc). Angles are the subject of geometry, you see, and geometry is a branch of mathematics. Also, you'd have to be a nerd to remember how to play most of the songs. Hence the name. At least that's my take on it, anywho.

Two are rather springing to the forefront, it must be said.
― Just got offed, Friday, 18 May 2007 19:31 (nineteen years ago)
Dude, I was serious! He said 'Math-related' - a theme - rather than 'Math Rock'- a name - so I just needed to clear that up. Here is some 'math-related' rock.

There was the Battles album.
To come out:
Ahleuchatistas - Even in the Midsts... (this is the one I really want) Upsilon Acrux - Galapagos Momentum (leaked?) Behold... the Arctopus - Skullgrid (their first album)
― xox, Friday, 18 May 2007 20:09 (nineteen years ago)
Have you pitchforkers ever heard of this new band called DEERHOOF? supposedly they're the next big thing!!!
― Steve Shasta, Friday, 18 May 2007 20:21 (nineteen years ago)
ha
― xox, Friday, 18 May 2007 22:52 (nineteen years ago)
the pAper chAse - cntrl-alt-delete-u (This is an EP that sounds more like their first two albums. Quite good, but if you haven't heard the first two albums they're the place to start. Think Drive Like Jehu in Texas.)
The battles album was already mentioned.
I'll think of more soon. I'd like to hear about 2006 releases as well. I'll post some myself soon.

russian circles from chicago
― cutty, Friday, 18 May 2007 23:43 (nineteen years ago)
I'd like to hear about 2006 releases as well.
Good: more Ahleuchatistas, a Dysrhythmia album, The Flying Luttenbachers' Cataclysm. It's a small pool. Only considering instrumental bands, though.
― xox, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:26 (nineteen years ago)
anyone heard those two Tarentel albums i keep looking at at the record store. they aren't on temp res. they are vinyl. maybe live? they are pretty new i think.
― scott seward, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:38 (nineteen years ago)
new fridge album is boring. you know, the dude from four tet.
― scott seward, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:39 (nineteen years ago)
fridge was never mathrock!
― cutty, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:41 (nineteen years ago)
but i agree that new one is horrible
i really like the giant brain album on small stone. more of a kraut/acid/instro thing, but it would appeal to don cab fans. dude from big chief rocks on it:

― scott seward, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:43 (nineteen years ago)
a few more things popped into my head: 2007 - new Hella 2006 - new Don Cab, Make Believe's Of Course, Meshuggah's excellent remix of Nothing 2005 - Bellini's Small Stone, Big Bear - s/t
― professor ganson, Saturday, 19 May 2007 14:40 (nineteen years ago)
2006 releases I found at least pleasant:
Dysrhythmia -Barriers & Passages Russian Circles -Enter (math-y post-rock with some EITS thrown in, really recommended -EITS are not recommended instead) Uzeda -Stella Double Dragons -s/t Swims -s/t Muddy World -Finery of the Storm (interesting, also some fusion & flamenco) Ahleuchatistas -What You Will
(Actually I was disappointed by Don Cab, whose album was barely passable to me)
― Korcnoj, Saturday, 19 May 2007 17:18 (nineteen years ago)
there are actually four new tarentel records, on make mine music. they're good.
― akm, Saturday, 19 May 2007 17:58 (nineteen years ago)
2007 - new Hella
I wish I could forget.
― xox, Saturday, 19 May 2007 18:05 (nineteen years ago)
Haha. So true.
― jim, Saturday, 19 May 2007 18:07 (nineteen years ago)
Yeah, don't confuse my list with a recommendation list, though I do recommend Make Believe's Of Course. Reminds me of U.S. Maple in its prime.
Excellent list, Korcnoj. I couldn't find Swims or Double Dragons, but everything else is either much liked or on my list of things to hear.
A couple of fun things I found today while thinking about math-y stuff: bullship - s/t cheval de frise - fresques sur les parois (as enjoyable as hella back in the day)
One math-y indie pop band I'd like to see resurrected is Ancient Greeks. Fun for Steve Reich fans who wish that Reich would write music for guitar.
― professor ganson, Saturday, 19 May 2007 18:40 (nineteen years ago)
professor ganson has obviously never heard Electric Counterpoint!
― Steve Shasta, Saturday, 19 May 2007 19:10 (nineteen years ago)
Wow, I'm pretty sure I had the Reich/Metheny album back when it first came out, but completely forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder!
― professor ganson, Saturday, 19 May 2007 19:24 (nineteen years ago)
Maybe you've found something interesting during the last 40days. Drinking "Nero d'Avola" excessively.
― Korcnoj, Monday, 2 July 2007 00:44 (eighteen years ago)
There is a new record by The Conformists, a band from around here in St. Louis that is really great. I guess it could be considered math rock, but it is so much more...really fucked up in the best way possible. It is called Three Hundred.
― jonathan - stl, Monday, 2 July 2007 04:53 (eighteen years ago)
Not from 2007, but new to me: Terra Melos - s/t (2005) The Dropscience - Dies Tonight (2002) Clikitat Ikatowi - River of Souls (2004)
From 2007, but perhaps doesn't count (haven't heard it yet): new Shellac
Uzeda's Stella may be may favorite, recent math rock album. Excellent.
― professor ganson, Sunday, 8 July 2007 13:43 (eighteen years ago)
New-ish, but nothing too novel:
By the end of tonight- A Tribute to Tigers (2005) -Fireworks on Ice (2004) Maps & Atlases - Tree, Swallows, Houses (2006) Tenebre - In Everything Give Thanks (2006) Sharks Keep Moving - Pause and Clause (2002) (have heard just a few 30 second bits) Speaking Canaries - Get Out Alive (2003) Polaris Mine - s/t (2002) Ghosts and Vodka - Addicts and Drunks (2003) Crime in Choir - Trumpery Metier (2006)
The last too weren't really my taste; the rest ranged from ok to good.
― professor ganson, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)
Looks like I'm the only one updating this thread. Two excellent 2007 releases:
ahleuchatistas - even in the midst sleeping people - growing
― professor ganson, Saturday, 27 October 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)
There's a band here in Baltimore called Avec, very math rock with female vocals, their new album Lines is pretty great.
I'm pretty psyched about Faraquet reuniting, they just did some songs in Brazil and are supposed to do one in D.C. sometime this year or next year when Dischord releases a compilation of their old EPs and singles.
― Alex in Baltimore, Saturday, 27 October 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)
some shows in Brazil, I meant to say.
Faraquet reuniting? Excellent news, indeed.
― professor ganson, Sunday, 28 October 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I don't know if it's a one-off excuse to re-release rarities and play the old stuff live or if they're actually writing new songs, but Medications broke up so who knows. As long as Devin Ocampo keeps doing the tangled mathy thing he does under one name or another I'll be happy.
― Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 28 October 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)
Better get this in before year's end. Outstanding:
37500 yen - astero

On the mathcore side of things: this year's Dillinger Escape Plan War From A Harlot's Mouth the By The End Of Tonight/Tera Melos split Burnt By The Sun The Red Chord Behold...The Arctopus
― Marty Innerlogic, Saturday, 15 December 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

So amazing.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 15 December 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)
Upsilon Acrux - Galapagos Momentum Ahleuchatistas - Even in the Midst.. pretty good ones!
― mersenne_twister, Monday, 17 December 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)
I like the new Dillinger. I was pretty bummed by what I heard off the new "Behold... the Arctopus," though.
