i've only heard one track of hers to date (something from the craig richards fabric 15 comp, and it was great). what's the word on this one?

Lex loves it. I haven't heard it. That cover is bizarre, she looks like Sydney Bristow undercover.

My favourite MIA track is "Change" from the Sweet November ep - totally storming.

well, the cover is superb and the music is likewise. fav track - chateau mandourelle

The cover is the most un-MIA thing she's done! She's usually so reserved, it sort of sets the wrong mindframe for the album, which is definitely more chilled than flashy. But then again this thread probably wouldn't have started without that eyegrabbing cover.

I am an admitted MIA lover (I've repped Schwarzweiss a lot on ILM, most of her EPs are choice too) and I'm not disappointed at all with this album. A couple slightly weaker tracks put it a little below Schwarzweiss in my book, but I think she's still an underrated talent.

There is a lot of tight, muted guitar-ish basslines on the record, especially the hidden track "Leaving Behind" - which sounds weirdly reminscent of the bassline of "Sunny Afternoon" by The Kinks.

i think the cover is perfect for the album! my immediate reaction to it was "cold, chilly" rather than "flashy".

it is a very chilly album - comparable to the allien fabric mix maybe but slightly icier, more brittle, smaller. loads of voice fragments, vocal hooks which only occasionally make it into forming sentences. i do love it - it gets better and better towards the end i think. 'under the bridge' has this irresistible arpeggio looped guitar riff throughout, 'chateau mandourelle' is all about sinister organ + ket beats + a touch of 'mandarine girl', the beats on 'so i felt' are fucking volcanic, 'datalover' is paranoia on the dancefloor...

people should definitely be all over this album!

(nb i haven't heard schwarzweiss...)

i guess people are too busy with mediocrities like the field album to bother with this :(

lex pretend, Friday, 20 April 2007 12:57 (seventeen years ago) link

there's only room enough for one MIA on ilx i suppose

I loved all the EPs that were around a year or two ago, and the track she had on that triple r mix (the third one? or the second? I think it was called "River"). I'd be excited to hear this, she's my preferred MIA.

Hot body, bad hair. What's the music like?

Spencer Chow, Friday, 20 April 2007 17:29 (seventeen years ago) link

"river" is the track i was talking about from the fabric comp, i think. yes, this mia>>>the other mia.

félix pié, Friday, 20 April 2007 17:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Spencer, you cad.

admrl, Saturday, 21 April 2007 02:36 (seventeen years ago) link

yes, this mia>>>the other mia.

OTM. I've always said this.

I've always liked her productions. There's an attention to sound design and a subtle sense of development, but is also very individual--something sorely lacking in the dull, aesthetic fascism of what has passed for minimal the last couple of years.

I feel that the other MIA is capable of selling records without appearing in the nip, making her significantly better than this one.

I just wanted to mention something I noticed recently: You cannot search for MIA in the direct ILX search function. In fact, I don't think you can do it for any three letter word (adding periods after the letters didn't help either). You can search it in the Google search, but you come up with a lot of crappy answers that didn't help me get where I wanted to go.

If anyone knows how to get back to that old thread about the LCD Soundsystem/MIA tour, please help.

I believe you couldn't search for any three letter words in the Old ILX search either.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 22 April 2007 03:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Hahaha I thought this was the other MIA, was rather puzzled (and impressed)

Why do you have to be a party pooper? That is NO EXCUSE.
