I'd bitch about the ARIAs (Australian Record Industry Awards) but they're actually not too bad - the award for last year's best alternative release was very much deserved - Art Of Fighting's Wires. Someone's bound to think the ARIAs suck though.

Why recognize the contributions of Canada's cutting edge artists (eg. the Montreal electronic scene) when we can honour Celine Dion for making Canada an international joke?

Amazing. Isn't the entire Kitty-Yo roster Canadian? Where are they? (Not that they're incredibly great, but compared to Nickleback...)

Actually, 'Nickelback' is a great name, because that's what you'd get if you tried to sell their CD

What about a lifetime achievement award for Glass Tiger?

The whole notion of any kind of award that is given through a voting method is ludicrous. It ensures that the lowest common denominator will always win - so therefore, you can conclude that the winner of the award is actually the least offensive, least creative and least challenging option. So the "winner" is actually being recognized for being the most mediocre and/or least hated. Some honor.

Dave225, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yes. Voting always selects for the lowest common denominator. This is why democracy is dumb.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Popular consent and art don't go together. Popular consent and politics make some sense. (although it would be nice if the populace were educated -i.e. aware - not necessarily schooled.)

Dave225, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Everything is political

dave q, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Buck didnt get in? FREAK. I guess it proves you have to be loud and boastful to be noticed in rap. Never mind rap you have to be the same old formula for the Junos to notice you. I had such hopes after the past Alternative winners were mentioned, Julie Doiron and the Wooden Stars and New Pornographers.
Did the Weakerthans get anything?

Mr Noodles, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

ST. JOHN'S, Nfld. (CP) - At a long, roaring party that likely won't be forgotten for a long time on the Rock, the Canadian music industry looked with love on Diana Krall and reminded Nickelback how great they really are."

PLEEEEEAAAAAAASE. I'll offer Nickelback to any country willing to take it. Will settle for large club act or Best Offer.
Anthony, their from your province, please do something about them.
On a side note I was tying to think of my favorite band from each province. PQ and ON were too big but I couldnt think of any band at all from Sask.

Mr Noodles, Monday, 15 April 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Grammies just award those who the music conglomerates feel indebted to pat on the back for whatever reasons (cash cows). Not to praise Beck's Mutations or Radiohead's Kid A, but those were clearly better than that crappy Steely Dan record. I don't even know what this year's nominations are. I do miss the good ole days of Hammer and Vanilla Ice duking it out at the American Music Awards. Now that used to be an awards show! Funny how the MTV Music Awards took their position in the industry as the hip awards show. They learned a lot from Dick Clark. To the viewing audience though, it isn't about the awards, it's about the advertising and marketing. We Americans are such sheep. And to be honest, I like it that way. Popular music really is worse than it used to be. Nothing as sublime as Getz/Gilberto to take a Grammy here and now. Keep it shitty, maybe something will give, or not...

As stated elsethread, Saskatchewan is the lovely home of Wide Mouth Mason and Colin James, among many older acts like the Northern Pikes (who are really from Toronto now, probably).

Being generous I'd say the Stretch Orchestra sound alright, Dan Mangan is a fine young man and I've never knowingly heard the Sheepdogs so maybe they are good. The local paper thought it was an upset that Nickelback won nothing.

hmmmm... taking sides: Magic! vs. Devin Townsend. Had no idea they were Canadian until today - despite having enjoyed them as one of ILM's "worst of the year" for ages.

Hahaha. "Crazy For You".

Arkells
Chromeo
Mother Mother
Nickelback
You+Me

I'm Canadian, arguably somewhat knowledgeable about music and yet I've only heard of one of these bands. It's not a pretty admission either.

Brio2, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 21:39 (nine years ago) link

They are quite good actually. Seen them two or three times by chance at festivals or whatever (5+ years ago tho) but never listened to their recordings. Kinda like a folky Pixies iirc.

From the Juno nomination process FAQ @ http://junoawards.ca/faq.php:

4. Can I pay for my submission online?

Yes. Once all fields are entered properly during the submission process you will be prompted to a screen which will allow you to pay online with VISA, MasterCard or AMEX.

So you pay to be nominated? Makes me wonder if all awards shows function this way?

doug watson, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 22:02 (nine years ago) link

yeah pretty sure with most industry awards you pay a fee to be considered for nomination

Brio2, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 22:06 (nine years ago) link

Arkells and Mother Mother are both awful

Junos are a joke

i n f i n i t y (∞), Monday, 3 April 2017 19:16 (seven years ago) link

No, the Junos aren't a joke. They're a marketing tool, and in many of the non-televised categories a Juno win is an enormous career boost. Russell Peters on the other hand is the fucking worst.

Ρεμπετολογια, Monday, 3 April 2017 21:31 (seven years ago) link

Like cohen, mclachlan and the hip need a career boost

i n f i n i t y (∞), Monday, 3 April 2017 21:33 (seven years ago) link

No, they don't. But the East Pointers and the Okavango African Orchestra and A Tribe Called Red and Mandroid Echostar do. And to those acts a Juno win means a significant boost in the quality of the gigs they score and their asking price.

Ρεμπετολογια, Monday, 3 April 2017 21:41 (seven years ago) link

Fuckin' Tribe Called Red have been raking in Junos for four years now. They were designed by a CBC focus group.

not a fan of any award show but i give credit to the grammy's giving chance the rapper the best new artist award -- he's unsigned and
streams his shit online only

So we're supposed to hate on Tribe Called Red now? Thanks for the tip
