A proper introduction to breakbeat hardcore. . .

I'm looking to fix my total in-the-darkness about the genre (and on a tangential note, a bit of early jungle wouldn't hurt) 91-93 stuff, I suppose. If it helps, I'm think I'm looking for stuff more in the vein of "The Horn Track" by Egyptian Empire, as I prefer that to the assumedly much more common sped-up-goofy-sample heavy stuff a la Out Of Space (although I realize this can be seriously limiting)
I suppose I'm just looking for the essentials, possibly there is a compilation which will serve me perfectly. Either way thanks for whatever help.

Pay whatever you have to for History of Our World Part 1: Breakbeat & Jungle Ultramix by DJ DB

Origin Unknown: "Valley of the Shadows"
Metalheads: "Terminator"
Krome & Time: "This Is the Sound for the Underground"

These are pretty essential non-helium tunes from that era.

nine years pass...

Please educate me on old tracks/precursors that sound like Tessela jams (raw & syncopated a la 'Nancy's Pantry', 'Hackney Parrot')?

Are you already familiar with early Omni Trio? Specifically:

"Renegade Snares" (Original mix):

I only listened to "Hackney Parrot"; you're going to want to investigate Suburban Base and Moving Shadow records circa 1992-1993 for all sorts of different iterations on this theme, with this as a starting point:

(of course if you already know all that stuff, never mind)

Thanks Dan. I love Omni Trio but hadn't heard all those tracks...back in the day I sought out fast, arty jungle/d&b (like approaching 150bpm and up) but was generally ignorant of any slower, rave-ier stuff. Maybe breakbeat hardcore is the wrong term for what I'm looking for?

Had you heard/seen this Suburban Base comp: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Sub-Base-For-Your-Face-LP/master/83858

Not quite the same breakneck speed as the Speed Limit series due to timing but a lot of the same acts, and in some cases iterations of Speed Limit-era tracks at a more languid tempo

(Don't know if there's an analogous Moving Shadow comp; also maybe Reinforced should be in this conversation as a label to investigate)

Nope, will check it out.

Maybe a more accurate question -- say Tessela and Blawan tracks from a few years ago are basically hybrids of techno and breakbeats/UK garage/etc, is that a relatively new thing, or an update of a classic-era style?

I've got holes in my dance music history because I was always attracted to the fringier, less functional side of whatever was going on at the time.
