Rolling sad emo boys (and girls {but not Jessica Hopper}) thread 2007

It just occurred to me that there should probably be one of these. This may end up as just a three man circle jerk, but here goes.

Liking the Fall Out Boy album. Just found out it was produced (partially? wholly?) by Babyface. Which actually does kind of make sense, given the R&B-ish bent.

Listening to the new Good Charlotte right now. About half-way through and it sounds okay enough, but a bit repetitive. Did they always have the nu-wave synths, or is that a new thing for them? I don't remember hearing them before, but last time Good Charlotte came out with an album I was a resolute emo-hater, so I wasn't really paying attention.

That Hellogoodbye single I hear all the time is okay. I'm sure I like the verses, but I'm not sure whether I like the Cher vocoders are not.

I know they have their own thread, but I like the Enter Shikari stuff I've been hearing. I guess they consider themselves "trance-metal" or something stupid like that, but they're emo fuckers if I've ever heard emo fuckers.

Anyways, a few things out there to get the ball rolling...

The Reverend, Sunday, 25 March 2007 06:34 (seventeen years ago) link

Woah, "Something Else" on the Good Charlotte album, rather blatantly rips its hook from "Semi-Charmed Life".

The Reverend, Sunday, 25 March 2007 06:38 (seventeen years ago) link

That Good Charlotte album was kind of boring, but "Keep Your Hands Off My Girl" is fairly awesome in a NIN-y type of way.

Someone else come play with me. I'm getting lonely and emo in here.

The Reverend, Sunday, 25 March 2007 19:44 (seventeen years ago) link

About time this thread started. Anyone heard the new The Academy Is... album? I'm still waiting on my copy... as per the Good Charlotte album -- I found it way troublesome in the way it relates to women. I'll post a link to my review of it when it goes up.

So, Reverend, me and you? ;)

Mordechai Shinefield, Sunday, 25 March 2007 19:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I haven't really heard The Academy Is, although I have their single floating somewhere around my computer. I should give it a listen or two.

Re Good Charlotte: I tend not to hear the lyrics the first time I listen to a piece of music, and I've only listened to it once, so I wouldn't really know at this point.

So, is Bright Eyes no longer emo? Is he totally indie now?

Mordechai Shinefield, Sunday, 25 March 2007 20:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I heard his newest thing and its not even schmindie really, more like alt-country.

The Reverend, Sunday, 25 March 2007 20:47 (seventeen years ago) link

The TAI... single is pretty good. Headbang emo gets a thumbs up from me.

The Reverend, Sunday, 25 March 2007 22:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm pretty into that Hellogoodbye single, almost especially because of the vocoder. And the new Anberlin album (are we doing Christian emo too? Oh fuck yes we are), "Cities", sounded like crap on the first listen, but now I definitely like a couple of the songs, specifically "Dismantle. Repair". What is TAI...'s deal? Heard of them, but never heard them.

DM, Monday, 26 March 2007 02:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I think one can almost count Get Set Go here, as they are filled with hate and bile and pop hooks. Sadly, though, they aren't really sad so much, and they have a guy playing violin in the band. Anyway, Selling Out and Going Home is pretty great.

Dimension 5ive, Monday, 26 March 2007 03:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Anberlin's album really turned me off for a variety of reasons - personally, I think other bands do Christian emo far better (Blindside? Yes). Also - did anyone notice how steeped in nostalgia The Ataris have always been? Obviously "So Long, Astoria" is full of nostalgia, but this new album seems to be written completely in the present tense looking back. Anyways, here are my notes on the Ataris's album. I was going to pitch it around, but I wasn't satisfied with my read.

“Cardiff-By-The-Sea” begs to an unnamed angel: “Come sweet euphoria.” The song “New Year’s Day” conjures Robert Frost, “If only I could steal you away / From those paths we were led astray.” You can expect an Ataris’ song to delay resolution, and defer reconciliation. Never do the songs lead us into the present, but always into a story buried further and further into the past. “I would take back all those things I said that New Year's Day,” Kristopher Lee Roe sobs. But it is never this New Year’s Day. Roe’s songwriting robs the music of its urgency, but instills in it a sense of the misplaced - making Roe a unique entity among the emo elite. He may not render breakups in heart wrenching detail, but he does something far more interesting - he sounds like a man lost in his past.

During the recording of Welcome, Roe broke up his six-year relationship with his ex-wife, and The Ataris completely deconstructed. The current lineup has a new cellist, a new pianist, a third guitarist, a new drummer and a new bass player. The difference is palpable - the current crop seem more inspired by Rites of Spring than the pop-rock chops Roe used to specialize in. You won’t find any gorgeous melodies hiding behind the lyrical content anymore - like that catchy hook in “So Long, Astoria.” Instead you get grinding guitars and a drummer that sounds driven to drown out Roe’s lyrics. This might be for the best. While Astoria took detours from the well-trodden drama road - Welcome is absolutely relentless. Every song seems to go back to the same theme, and even the well-crafted, and almost catchy, “Connections are More Dangerous Than Lies” delivers the depressing: “We were such terrible liars / We were such passionate lovers.”

What made The Ataris refreshing was contrasting them to Dashboard Confessional. There was never anything redeeming in a Chris Carabba song - merely the hair strands left on your pillow case. Roe always remembered what he loved about those he lost, and he seemed more mature for it. Ten years later, rephrasing the same tired lines about memory, The Ataris sound like a broken record. Unlike Fallout Boy’s Pete Wentz, who sounds like he just wants the attention, Roe actually sounds miserable on this album. Shame it doesn’t make for interesting listening.

Just listened to the new The Fold album (from EMI, I think?). It's pretty solid emo-rock. Some hardcore influences, and some great shout-along parts. Anyone know anything about them?

Mordechai Shinefield, Thursday, 29 March 2007 02:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Never heard of the Fold, but I did seek out the Enter Shakari album. I like it a lot. It's not quite as emo overall as the singles I'd heard. They're much more effective when they're synthesizing their various influences in different ways than when they try to play anything straight. One thing that really surprised me: The token ballad is really good. I knew the token ballad would arrival sooner or later, and was dreading its coming, but it pleasantly surprised me. I think I want to talk more about this album after I've given it a few more listens.

A B C, Friday, 13 April 2007 06:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I really enjoyed Santi. It lacked some of the exuberance and breathless excitement that the debut had, but it's solid and it's certainly not a slump album. That said, it's also distinctive enough from Fallout Boy that I think it's a good step for the band. The reviews will all obviously still reference Fallout Boy (I think TAI... is on the Fallout Boy record label) but they've got a more distinct voice now, I think. So, in summary - nowhere near as impressive as the debut, but Santi holds a promise for a longer more sustained career. I'd say, good news for the Chicago boys.

Mordechai Shinefield, Friday, 13 April 2007 06:30 (seventeen years ago) link

New Used single: The Bird and The Worm is surprisingly good. Uses Classical influences in a way that Yellowcard never seemed to have a grip on, the imagery is shoulders above their last albums, and even the screaming choir seems like a huge step forward. Not to mention the great production values. At first listen, I'm calling it Classic - and I hate their old stuff.

Classic Emo Mashup: Legion of Doom - The Quiet Screaming (Dashboard Confessional V. Brand New) I recently got a copy of the new Legion album, "Incorporated." Is this actually new? I know the mashup is at least a couple years old.

Yes, actually. The chorus is taken from Supertramp's "Breakfast In America."

Read your VV Good Charlotte review. Pretty spot on, although I hadn't thought of the "stays in her place" line like that at all. I took it more literally to mean "she never leaves her place of residency".

Thank god you put Jessica Hopper's name in the thread, otherwise I'd never know what to search for when trying to bump this back to the top. Anyway: Since I doubt very many people will read this, I'm posting it here. The truth is, I really like Coheed and Cambria. But I do have to admit, they're lyrically all over the place, and completely over the top. So the piece may have come off as more mean than I would've liked, but I do believe that they should reign it in a bit.

It sounds sort of like he's making up new lyrics to "Dance, Dance" as he goes along. I don't really care for it. Also can we talk about the Cute is What We Aim For single and especially video, HOLY SHIT WHAT A PILE...or am I wrong?

A B C, Monday, 7 May 2007 04:11 (seventeen years ago) link

I heard about the backlash, but I haven't head the single yet - I'll try to listen to it tonight.

Mordechai Shinefield, Monday, 7 May 2007 05:27 (seventeen years ago) link

First impression: Emo songs about the brilliance of emo lyrics generally fall flat for me (with the notable exceptions of Cursive's Ugly Organ and Brand New's "Okay, I Believe You But My Tommy Gun Doesn't). And unlike both those examples, there's nothing within "The Curse of Curves" that justifies the boasting. Not to mention that music video - the blond bangs look is really aesthetically unappealing. Not to mention the blatant sexism - the silenced women in the video, the shot where the musician reclines on the bed while the woman crawls toward him, the fact that he's the brains and she's the beauty (he's got words, she only has curves).

Now, none of these things would necessarily keep me from enjoying the song (I listen to a lot of music with greater problems that those) but the song is so bland, and completely indistinguishable from most mainstream emo that it makes Fallout Boy look subtle. Which, using an analogy, is to say that "Curse of the Curves" is to emo in 2007 like Chevelle (or better, Nonpoint) were to nu-metal in 2000.

Mordechai Shinefield, Monday, 7 May 2007 06:05 (seventeen years ago) link

If Gym Class Heroes were called something like Panoptix or The Truth Movement, and were signed to the reformed Rawkus, they'd be getting the same kind of whiteboy critic dick-sucking that yr Panaceas and Kids In Da Halls are getting. As it is, they just have to make do with, you know, actually selling records.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 7 May 2007 09:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha, truth. I'm actually kinda starting to like "Cupid's Chokehold". Maybe it's just cause I'm listening to Top 40 radio lately.

The Reverend, Monday, 7 May 2007 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

If anyone's willing, and I don't know if Bright Eyes is still considered emo, but Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh is sort of like the Bohemian Rhapsody of alt-country-emo.. it's lovely.

As much as I like "Clothes Off!", it feels like a total hedging of bets for GCH to release a second single in a row with Stumpy singing a familiar hook.

The Reverend, Saturday, 16 June 2007 05:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Paramore - Misery Business

I like this. The singer sounds like she's going for the Patrick Stump cram-as-many-syllables-in-as-possible style of singing, but without Stumpsy's sense of melody, so it just kind of sounds like she's rapping a bit arrythmically. But that's fine by me. The guitars alternate between crunch and skitter. There's this nice, tense rising-guitar section after the bridge that's really satisfying. It could use more of a hook, but the guitar melody works well for that, even if the vocals don't. It may just be the emo-girl novelty (I'm surprised its taken this long!), but this is doing it for me this minute. Cute video too.

I should check if they've talked about this on teenpop.

The Reverend, Monday, 2 July 2007 20:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Jordan Sargent, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 06:11 (sixteen years ago) link

"The Great Escape" I can deal with, but it really doesn't do anything for me. Haven't heard anything else.

This is the only Paramore mention I can find in Teenpop:

First Paramore impression: This album (Riot) is really good! This year's Meg and Dia! Good singing, catchy melodies, nice guitar/drums, probably in my top 10 of the year to this point, but saying any more than that will require additional listens (haven't really paid attention to the lyrics, etc. at this point).

-- Greg Fanoe, Monday, July 2, 2007 6:30 AM (Monday, July 2, 2007 6:30 AM) Bookmark Link

Any idea who Meg & Dia are?

The Reverend, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 08:33 (sixteen years ago) link

There's a bunch on Paramore from 2006. Meg & Dia's album from last year had a couple of great tracks, search "Indiana" and the single "Monster." This exchange came after a discussion of "shemo," basically meaning female confessional rock, not Flyleaf and Meg and Dia and Paramore. (Best shemo teenpop track ever is probably "Unforgiven" by Fefe Dobson.)

More female fronted emo over at clap clap, the band is Paramore. Maybe this should be called shemo, since emo has been tainted by a culture war and the girl groups do it better anyway.

-- nameom (nameom), Saturday, 29 July 2006 14:41 (11 months ago) Link

Yeah, it's the only emo I've ever liked aside from Fall Out Boy, and it's totally the female vocals doing it. And not just for ideological reasons! A male voice, even a high one, can really get lost in the murk that is emo music and so it all sounds sludgy and indistinct, but the female vocals come out so well that it makes everything a lot more poppy. Paramore could definitely be better, but I like the idea, and I really like the video.

So, should I be checking out the Paramore album? I get a feeling I probably should be.

I keep hearing this emo cover of "Time After Time" on the radio. It's alright, but the problem with it is that if you're going to do the novelty genre cover of a well-known song, you should pick one that hasn't been used to that end before (early Lil Jon sighting alert!), and done better at that.

nervous, Sunday, 23 September 2007 00:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Speaking of p!atd live, I saw some live footage of them on youtube, in particular the one where the lead singer gets hit in the face with a thrown bottle at Warped Tour or something. Anyway you could hear him singing 4 or 5 more words to the song after he was hit and doing nothing but bending down and clutching his face in pain. Does anyone know if the Panic! boys fake it live sometimes? Is this an inquiry I should further pursue on a fan board rather than here? Not that it really matters if they do, I'd probably dig them even more if it was true.

I'd give the new Streetlight Manifesto a try. It comes out next week (I'm reviewing it). It's really Ska, but it's got a lot of emo sensibilities, a lot of lyrics that fit the genre conventions. And I get the feeling Tom (the singer) is much more connected to the emo scene than other ska bands. (Other Ska bands? Gasp. Yes, they exist.)

Also watched the Trick Turner video "Friends and Family" and thought about how great it was that emo has supplanted nu-metal as the genre of choice for angsty teenagers (and me).

Of note: Scanned a friend's teenager sister's iPod this weekend and found Les Miz + Rent next to MCR + Fallout Boy.

It's pretty new AFAIK. I think it just came out last week?

I totally don't suck!

New Taking Back Sunday album coming out (at least acc. to AMP Magazine). It's called New Again. First single (I think), and they've got a new guitarist - Matthew Fazzi - and... it really doesn't sound anything like them :(

Blah. That'll teach me for posting a youtube link without confirming it's the right song first. It's here:

I'm excited for the new Taking Back Sunday, they always manage a couple of good songs per album. I'm listening to the Two Tongues again right now, growing on me with each listen. Bemis' contributions are certainly the better of the two, but I've always had a soft spot for Conley's whine - so this is a pretty good pairing to my ears.

New Say Anything coming out (that first single is awesome IMHO), new Brand New coming out AND new Thrice coming out. It's like 2003 all over again!

Love the new Motion City Soundtrack. I was never really into them before, but something good happened when they signed to a major label. Much hookier.

Btw, if no one noticed, I use this thread as a Rolling Emo Boys thread, not just for 2007.

Yes, the new Motion City Soundtrack is pretty damn good! Glad I gave it a chance. I never liked anything I've heard off the previous two albums, but I was a big fan of I Am the Movie. Still nothing as good as "The Future Freaks Me Out", but "Her Words Destroyed My Planet" does a good job trying. Not a big fan of "History Lesson" though, the Flogging Molly touch just does not work.

Just dug out Through Being Cool and Stay What You Are this week for the first time in several years. They were favorites of mine when I was getting over a breakup in 2002, and I'm really surprised at how well they've held up. Before I knew the word "emo", I just called them "whineyboy". I never really got into emo though, other than Thrice/Thursday-ish screamo stuff, which is in a different league altogether, perhaps. I might try to investigate stuff like Say Anything and Motion City Soundtrack this week, just for kicks.

Also check out the new Gaslight Anthem + Against Me!. Good year for Warped Tour'ish bands.

the soundguy at a recent show i went to was playing through being cool in between bands. i'm sure it was the delicate balance of nostalgia, booze, and weed, but "you vandal" was about the most perfect thing to my ears at that moment
