If you had to be in either The Bangles or The Go-Go's (during the 80's) which would you choose-and why. Boys can participate.

I think I'd choose The Go-Go's and kick Belinda's ass outta the band.

Susanna Hoffs holds special place holds a place in indie boys hearts bested only by Hope Sandoval. So if it's just a straight Bangles Vs The GoGo's fight I would have to go with janglesome Bangles. So many great tunes, a rickenbacker signature model ferchrissakes, "Eternal Flame", "Going down to Liverpool" (Soft Boys connection!). They win hands down. HOWEVER, if The Go Go's were allowed to tag-team in their solo projects they'd walk it as "Rush Hour" by Jane "the word 'pixie' must appear here by Law" Weidlin is one of the finest songs ever. Now if it was a Three way with Wilson Phillips then things would get really exciting...

I am struggling to think of any Go-Go's songs I know past "We Got the Beat" (great) and "Vacation" (so-so). On the other hand, I can readily recall several Bangles songs I like ("Manic Monday", "Eternal Flame", "Walk Like an Egyptian", "Hazy Shade of Winter", "Going Down to Liverpool") so they take it.

Dan, what are we going to do with you? Eternal Flame is awful, it's like the kind of drippy music that's in tampon commercials. It probably inspired Sarah McLachlan.

That said, I do like some Bangles songs...but anyone who would seriously pick the Bangles over the Go-Gos is mad! I think they were one of the first bands I ever really loved.

Speak of the devil . . . despite the Go-Go's everlasting historical significance and general pop bossness, I'm going to have to go with the Bangles, if only because the ol' mental shuffle-play treated me to that "Manic Monday" line about "kissing Valentino by a crystal- blue Italian stream" out of nowhere early this morning. Only two problems with that, really. One, Italian streams tend to be green. Two, I wasn't kissing anyone; I was wiping poo (also green) off the baby's ass while changing his diaper.

"Eternal Flame" has awful lyrics, a wonderful melody, one of the world's greatest bridges, and adapts itself so well to a capella singing that even the most tone-deaf group can sound halfway decent singing it. I make no apologies for loving that song.

Having said that, it's nowhere near the best song The Bangles did. That would either be "Hazy Shade Of Winter" (especially for the bongo solo in the 12" remix), "Manic Monday", or "If She Knew What She Wants".

The only good song Whitesnake released was "Is This Love?", whereas Heart had great songs with "These Dreams" and "Alone" but truly augmented them with bizarrely inappropriate videos. The less said about "All I Wanna Do ..." the better.

So much hate for "Eternal Flame"! Dan captures it exactly: terrible lyrics, awesome melody. And Mellotron (I think)! How can you go wrong?

this is really hard to choose. My kneejerk reaction is the Go-Go's, but I really do looove All Over The Place. But I also looove Beauty And The Beat. and I also looove songs from their later releases. Fuck it, unless I later hear Susanna Hoffs' solo stuff and its rocks awesomely, I'm gonna say Go-Go's. Though man, I saw that Cool Jerk video recently and that was horrible...ugh...i dunno...

Had the Bangles disbanded right after _All Over The Place_, we'd be talking about them like a great lost Paisley Underground band. Their first 7" as "The Bangs" and the Faulty Products 12" are both wonderful, and _All Over_ suggested (incorrectly, as it turned out) that they could produce a commercial record without sacrificing their songwriting acumen. It's a darn shame that most people think of silly Egyptian dances and big hairstyles when the Bangles' name is mentioned, as opposed to early gems like "I'm In Line" or "Mary Street."

The Go-Gos' first three albums were all pretty good, so I guess I'd have to give it to them for consistency.

I touched the original Susannah Hoffs Rickenbacker. Tee hee. I just had to. It was sitting in a rack next to me and no one was looking. I covet that guitar.

OH MY GOD THE BANGLES WERE SO LOVELY!!!

They were amazing. They sounded good, they looked good, and they were so SWEET!!! It's utterly amazing what fantastic musicians they are, I was totally flabbergasted. Vicky Peterson ... christ! it was embarrassing being on the same stage as her, she is so good! And the harmonies... WOW! It's hard enough to pull off two-part harmonies live, but they just sang like birds, it was utterly mind-blowingly incredible how good they sounded. Horton and I were coming down the backstage stairs at the Empire, and we could hear them warming up in their dressing room, just singing a capella, and it was AMAZING, we just stood outside and listened to them. Oh, they rocked. They were so incredible.

And they're lovely. They really are. We snuck upstairs into their dressing room at Manchester, and I was so convinced they were going to throw us out, and they were really polite as I was gushing about how good they were until they realised "Oh, wait, you're a Lollie!" and it was just love, love, love, they were so wonderful. I kept gushing at Vicky what an inspiring guitar player she was, I think I embarrassed her, but she's incredible. It was so cute, because we got to the Empire early, and we were stood there watching the soundcheck and they're waving at us from the stage.

It was just a really really wonderful experience. Yes, they played all the hitz- Hazy Shade of Winter (rah!), Manic Monday, In Your Room, Walk Like An Egyptian, If She Knew What She Wants, Going Down To Liverpool, Hero Takes A Fall ... it was really fantastic. I love them so much!

2 weeks pass...

I opened this thread fully expecting a blowout for The Go-Gos, who I thought had all the cred and appear constantly in my peers' record collections, whereas I never see anybody with anything by the Bangles (accidentally typed "the Buggles," whom I actually like) and the songs that I know by them (that's "Manic Monday" and "Walk Like An Egyptian" and NOTHING else) have always basically grated on me. I would say "Manic Monday" is about an equal battle with "Vacation" but virtually anything I know by the Go-Gos trounces "Walk Like An Egyptian."

So, I'm wondering, is this a generational thing? Like if you were a club-hopping teen of the times, do the Bangles go way up for some reason? Because for this to even be a contest, to my ear, there has to be something else in play. Otherwise it's the Go-Gos in a walk.

If you're not sold on the Bangles, then you need a copy of All Over the Place right quick. Even Different Light has some choice album tracks.

The Go-Go's were just as uneven, but they have one more near-great album (Talk Show) than the Bangles. So, the Go-Go's win, in a photo finish.

Sorry, in a battle of first albums (since that's all I've ever bothered with for either. Though we own Talk Show, I've listened to it about twice), the Go Gos win hands down. Even the stupid songs are more awesome by an order of magnitude. This isn't to say that I don't like the Bangles, just that the first Go Gos albums is one of the most perfect pop slabs ever. EVER.

Then again, only on "Hero Takes a Fall" do the Bangles' own songs approach the sublimity of their cover of Jules Shear's "If She Knew What She Wants."

So, yeah, the Go-Go's were better songwriters.

Four tracks into 'Sweetheart of the Sun' and it's a bit of a gem. I can't help but think that Susanna Hoffs is an underrated vocalist, the Rainy Day version of 'I'll Keep It with Mine' is in my top 10 of Dylan covers.

otm, although tbh for me I'm so into the Fairport Convention version of "I'll Keep It With Mine" I'm having trouble getting into this one. But pretty much every other cover version that I've heard from her has gotten me right away.
