Turf Club

DAMO SUZUKI!

Damo's backing band, which I guess he always culls from local talent, will be fucking SUPERB, trust me...couldn't think of better people..

So far the line up is:

Freddy Votel (ex Cows drummer, also ex-TVBC, sometimes in Seawhores, main project is Skoal Kodiak these days)

Brady Lenzen - also in Skoal Kodiak, Noise Quean Ant, and sometime Seawhore

Issac Rotto - Gay Beast

this is going to be so great!

Other possible cool things:

Foundation Nightclub:

1/20 - Afrika Bambaataa

1/25 - Funkdoobiest (!!), Thirsten Howl III, Evil E

Turf Club:

2/9 - The Hidden Hand (ex St Vitus SST dudes), Kylesa

he board on modern radio is good for twin cities centric stuff. do you post there matt?

haha yeah i'm m@gm@90210 on that board i hang out there a lot.

wrt Faggot:

I, personally, find them to be more interesting to read about than actually listen to/see live. It's pretty much just sloppyish punk/metal to me, I understand there's a lot of "interesting" personal politics/sexual identity type stuff that was cool to read abt in the City Pages thing on them, but it doesn't do much for me musically....but I know people that love them...

yeah it's sort of strange in that almost everyone knows each other in "real life"

foundation is a really nice place, and it sounds great.

yeah i'm so skittish about putting down big $$ on hip hop shows though, my friends were just complaining abt. paying $25 at escape ultra lounge to see 3 hrs of local rap dudes then 30 minutes of Clipse (who didn't even go on until 1:30)

Rhys Chatham's Guitar Trio with special guests: Fog
Written in 1977, "Guitar Trio" is Rhys Chatham's signature composition, and with good reason. The word "seminal" was invented to describe it. With a single, repeated chord, Chatham permanently altered the DNA of rock by splicing the gritty, overtone-drenched minimalism of John Cale and Tony Conrad with the elemental fury of The Ramones. The amalgamation was inspired. It energized the downtown New York scene throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, and made Chatham a founding father of the notorious No Wave movement. The influence of "Guitar Trio" spread even farther as former students and ensemble members carried its shimmering swagger into the rock mainstream. When Sonic Youth are inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame (in, yes, Cleveland -- and you know it's gonna happen), listen for some G3. It's there.

In 2007 Chatham returns (he expatriated to Paris in 1987) to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "Guitar Trio" by performing it on tour throughout the US and Canada. And we don't mean it's on the set list; it is the set list. These will be no ordinary concerts, and the ensemble -- pumped up to a formidable six guitars at most shows -- will be no ordinary ensemble. Chatham will lead a band of all-stars at the Whole. The concerts will also feature the original visual projections created for the piece in 1977 by famed visual artist and feature-film director Robert Longo.

Together, Rhys Chatham and company will demonstrate to a new generation of fans the amazing feats that can be accomplished with one chord, six guitars, a rollicking rhythm section and amplifiers set to "Liquefy." The show will also be recorded, to be released on a G3-only CD. The title? It's obvious: Guitar Trio Is My Life.

Rhys will perform with:
Guitar: Erik Fratzke, (HAPPY APPLE, ZEBULON PIKE)
Guitar: Andrew Broder, (FOG)
Guitar: Todd Rittman, (US MAPLE)
Guitar: Ben Vida, (BIRDSHOW, TOWN AND COUNTRY)
Guitar: Rob Lowe, (90 DAY MEN, LICHENS)
Guitar: DAVID DANIELL (JONATHAN KANE, SAN AGUSTIN)
Bass: Greg Norton, (ex-HUSKER DÜ, GANGFONT FEATURING INTERLOPER)
Drums: Tim Glenn, (FOG, BATLORD)

A new, slim, trim, and vigorous Fog opens the show.

Get here early to see this once-in-a-lifetime event!

It is not, in my opinion worth the 10 dollars to see the exhibit on its own. If you go during one of the performance nights/days maybe, but in my experience the charm wore off in about four minutes.

NOW THAT WAS A GODDAMN SHOW. At the Turf Club last night, the Blind Shake continued their tradition of not failing to not disappoint, and the Birthday Suits caused me to grin with my mouth wide open and my eyes bugging out, a sure indicator of quality. Also found The STNNNG excellent, much improved since my last sighting of 'em in late 2010. TWIN CITIES ROCK MUSIC PERSONNEL: YOU ARE DOING IT RIGHT.

Andrew WKRP (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 7 January 2013 14:18 (4 months ago) Permalink

Well now that should be a thing. My only nitpick is that I feel strongly that they ought to be called The STNNNG, but the singer's taste in footwear more than makes up for this tiny flaw.

Dear Friends,

On Saturday, January 19th we will be hosting the tenth installment of our "Rock 'n' Roll Breakfast Series." And it's a big one. We will be hosting not one... not two... but three fantastic acts (all of whom are celebrating brand new albums) while you chow down on free pastries and coffee. Please join us for a foot-stompin' good time!

TREEHOUSE ROCK 'N' ROLL BREAKFAST SERIES VOL. 10
Saturday, January 19
10 AM Sharp
Triple Record Release Show featuring CHARLIE PARR, THE BLACK TWIG PICKERS, and NATHAN BOWLES

Charlie Parr
Fans of local and roots music and friends of the store are certainly familiar with Charlie's incredible guitar and banjo finger-picking and raw honesty. He's simply one of the greatest active practitioners operating in the folk-blues realm. His previous album When the Devil Goes Blind was released on our in-house label Nero's Neptune and is probably the single best-selling album in the nearly twelve-year history of our store. He has a brand new album called Barnswallow, which he'll be unveiling with record release shows next weekend at the Cedar Cultural Center and at this very special in-store performance. Getting to see Charlie perform in any setting is a treat, but as an added bonus he'll have some of his friends with him...

The Black Twig Pickers
This unique Appalachian folk ensemble has been making music together for over a decade. In that time, they have recorded collaborations with Charlie Parr and the late, great Jack Rose, and released many albums of their own. Their mix of old-time folk/country/gospel/bluegrass with modern drone and improvisational music (the Pickers' Mike Gangloff founded the legendary drone-folk group Pelt with the aforementioned Rose) has earned them a devoted international following. Their brand new album Rough Carpenters will be released by the prestigious Thrill Jockey label on February 19, but Thrill Jockey has agreed to let us sell copies a full month in advance for this in-store!

Nathan Bowles
Nathan is a member of The Black Twig Pickers, Pelt, & Pigeons. He is a virtuoso banjo player and his debut solo instrumental album A Bottle, A Buckeye has just been released by local label Soft Abuse Records. He'll be doing a solo set to begin the festivities on Saturday morning. Arrive early to check him out!

As always, we will be providing FREE coffee from Caffetto and delicious breakfast treats from local pastry chef Joanna Biessener (Solera, La Belle Vie).

Thanks,
The Treehouse Gang
