I Have Fallen Head Over Heels For White Willow

jeezus, their Signal To Noise album has staggered me. hongro has been holding out on us. this is amazing norwegian prog-pop-rock. so catchy, so many cool synths, such a great voice (on "splinters" she sounds a lot like sandy denny, and on some of the poppier tunes like that woman from st.etienne). now i want all their albums. this is such a great headphones pop-rock album. kate bush made those. definitely would go on a top ten of mine if i had one. i might have to make a top ten on der blog just so i can include this. those double-tracked harmonies! the frippertronics! the mellotrons! the moog voyager solo!

you can listen to some of their stuff at myspace and on their website, but the fidelity is seriously compromised. the cd sounds like a dream.

I think I've heard this? I'll have to double disc to see if the disc is still around, or is this a new one?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

Double CHECK rather.

i like frenetic prog noodle-jams as much as anyone, but what i love about this album is how leisurely and luxurious the soloing is. like a warm prog bath. the synth/moog/piano stuff is so well done/played/recorded. definitely reminiscent of 70's crimson/genesis/etc, but thoroughly modern as well.

apparently they have five albums, and this is only the 2nd album with this singer. and the album before this was supposedly a "darker" "concept" album. really want to hear that as well.

oooh i'm so intrigued! thanks for the tip!!!

four months pass...
Martian, did you ever hear this album? Even though they are from Norway and he would love it, I know better than to tell Hongro to buy it cuz he never listens to me.

Still not sure if such an amazing album should be saddled with this cover, but what are ya gonna do:

Weird how I missed this thread in October. This is a fantastic album, on par with the Gathering's recent stuff, albeit a bit more adventurous.

The White Willow - Nightside of Eden track on their 2004 album Storm Season must be one of the finest rock tracks of the decade.

There are moments on this track are sublime, especially the looping guitar epic sound towards the end of the track.

this reviews tries to explain:

http://www.seaoftranquility.org/reviews.php?op=showcontent&id=1689

This is especially evident on the bombastic closing piece "Nightside of Eden", a tumultuous rocker firmly in the Anekdoten, Landberk, or Opeth tradition, complete with thunderous guitar riffs, powerful vocals, and layers of keyboards. Check out the amazing Hammond organ solo from Lars Fredrik Frøislie, which then gives way to a melodic scorcher from Sæbøe, who then turns it back to Frøislie for a brief break on the mini-moog. Things then get pastoral with some Genesis -like acoustic interludes before the heavy riffs come crashing back into the mix backed by chilling Mellotron.

Thanks so much for this tip. I'm loving the 1st 2 tracks from the Myspace page so far.

Ned, you know you've always wanted to double disc. Don't worry. Everyone does.

That is a truly awful album cover.

Surmounter, Monday, 30 April 2007 01:37 (nineteen years ago)

and i don't mind the album cover. i don't love it but i don't mind it.

Surmounter, Monday, 30 April 2007 01:37 (nineteen years ago)

so yea i kindof wish the synths were turned up a bit, on signal to noise (didn't someone say that before?)

and this songwriting is crazy, it's like i don't know how to categorize it, at all. i pretty much love it, it's just so hard to put your finger on. beautiful textures. i've been playing it at work, so i can't wait for good speakers listen
