Just downloaded this and am digging it. Does anyone know anything substantive about him besides what's on his MySpace page?

The duo discs with Paul Flaherty (The Beloved Music, The Hated Music) are absolute killers.

wolfwolfwolf (wolfwolfwolf), Thursday, 19 October 2006 05:35 (nineteen years ago)

he does the invisible jukebox in this month's wire - pretty interesting stuff.

his drumming is so taut and elemental - i really dig the split he did with ben chasny and paul metzger - pure fire.

He sounds good on the Dream/Aktion Unit CD that Volcanic Tongue put out. I've seen him 3 times in Coventry venues which is pretty bizarre when you think about it!

Joe Grassby (sloejoe), Thursday, 19 October 2006 12:06 (nineteen years ago)

He rules the Dream/Aktion Unit album together with Paul Flaherty. One of the brightest talents around. Check out his two albums with Paul Flaherty and his solo debut, The Young Cricketeer for a better impression of what he does, Blood Pressure is solely synthplaying

He is one of the best drummers around. His previous cd-r called the Young Cricketer is basically a solo drum record and it's SICK. I like Blood Pressure too (which is him w/o drums), but search him out in any jazz-improv-like situation (ie w/ Paul Flaherty, Cold Bleak Heat, I guess he's playing a lot with Evan Parker now- whoa) and also Vampire Belt or Vampire Can't (new album on Load with Jessica Rylan) and also Sunburned Hand of the Man or Six Organs. I mean basically everything he's involved with is worth hearing, he's like an octopus with an intensity and a control and a flair for heavy communication. Reminds me of Professor Milford Graves if that's even possible to say at this early stage in Corsano's career, probably the highest praise I could dream up! His presence on sunburned jams vastly improves them.

I played my Dad the Young Cricketer CDr, thinking he couldn't fail to be astonished. 'Too much cymbal' apparently.

I dig Corsano, but I think Sunburned is at their best when Phil Franklin is behind the kit. Plus, what made Suburned a truly percussive/rhytmic force wasn't Corsano but Cooper 'n' Critter.

I saw him back Jandek (along with Loren Connors and Matt Heyner) in NYC last year. All three managed to overcome the general sorriness of Jandek's performance and deliver something pretty solid.

Corsano and Joe McPhee at Subcurrent earlier this year = sublime.

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

I really like his playing on Six Organs Of Admittance "School Of The Flower."

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 19 October 2006 17:25 (nineteen years ago)

Immolation/Immersion with Nels Cline and Wally Shoup from last year is pretty good. I know Corsano has played the High Zero fest here in Baltimore, but I can't remember if I actually ever saw him play at it.

is high zero a bunch of wank? seen enough red room shows to be wary of that whole scene

am0n (am0n), Friday, 20 October 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

Corsano's supporting Jonathan Kane at the Spitz (London) this Sunday, yah mo b there.

He's with Carla Bozulich in Edinburgh next week - presumably i should go?

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 20 October 2006 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

Did anyone catch his shows with Keiji Haino? Gutted I had to miss out on those...

He's playing with Dylan Nyoukis at the Colour Out of Space fest too. An excellent pairing of baldy spazzes, no?

paizuri-san (davidcorp), Friday, 20 October 2006 09:08 (nineteen years ago)

there's definitely a lot of wank involved in High Zero, yeah. in generally I have a limited tolerance for that stuff, which is why I've never been to a Red Room show, but I kind of like going to HZ because you can just see so many different performers in one night that there's bound to be some redeeming moments.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Saturday, 21 October 2006 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

i can remember one great red room performance (reynols) but the others ranged from forgettable to just plain bad. i recall one night when me and a couple roommates went there, we were living just around the corner at the time, and it was so awful that we looked at each other and left within a couple minutes. we even tried to get our money back and they wouldn't do it! they definitely turned me off completely from the whole "the sound is secondary to the process/experiment". it's like a whole scene devoted to a big cop-out

(end of off-topic rant)

am0n (am0n), Saturday, 21 October 2006 15:58 (nineteen years ago)

yeah I definitely feel you on that. there were some moments like that the first couple times I went to High Zero were I felt like throwing things at certain performers, but since then I've kind of accepted that as the general vibe of the scene (although there's still occasionally people I want to throw shit at).

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Saturday, 21 October 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

You should. More improv/eai/what-have-you acts should be pelted with rotten fruit, or at least heckled.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Saturday, 21 October 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

YESSSS i agree 110%! one performance i was at i had that same thought of "why don't people boo at this shit? why are they so polite?"

three years pass...

I just saw Corsano properly live for the first time(at Cafe Oto, LDN) (I'm supposed to have seen earlier this year at the same venue, but really failing to recall; and not counting seeing him as Bjork's drummer).

Anyway, obviously amazing but his two sets were pretty intense, if fluid. It was meant to be a trio - drums, double bass, electric guitar (played with feedback, short sharp + scuzzy noodly bursts), but ended but being a duo (drum, guitar b/c John Edwards, the double bassist's mother has passed away).

Anyway, anyway in terms of recorded work - what stands up to repeated listening? I enjoy "challenging" / "improv" live, but is there any Corsano thats more gently improv?

Whats the Flowers Corsano record like?

Tannenbaum Schmidt, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 00:27 (sixteen years ago)

the first flowers/corsano lp is great. i think it's called "the radiant mirror"?.
the new one is also good, but not as good as that first one.

Creeztophair, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 01:09 (sixteen years ago)

cool. thks.

there's a new John Edwards / Chris Corsano record out which was on sale at the gig. My friend got a copy. I'll try and grab a listen and report back.

Tannenbaum Schmidt, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 01:12 (sixteen years ago)

Flower Corsano definitely falls under "more gently improv", if not very improv at all. it's more of a marathon trance jam. the drumming is more rhythmic but still as elemental, as it was aptly described, with these thick sprawling drones on top of it. highly recommended. they released one this year but i still also prefer their first one tbh

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 17 November 2009 01:16 (sixteen years ago)

You can't fail with The Young Cricketer. And if you dig that, there was a recent Ultra Eczema LP which is probably not too dissimilar.

funereal sneezeguard (gnarly sceptre), Tuesday, 17 November 2009 10:45 (sixteen years ago)

still need to hear that Ultra Eczema LP, heard good things about it

Corsano is a legend in the making...would love to see him duel/jam with Bennink
