there's such a sense of modesty and understated melancholy in the lyrics that is somehow so much more effective than someone righteously spelling out every single shred of heartbreak they feel.

I loved their shows

i loved "sophtware slump" so much that everything since has been a bitter disappointment. AND I'VE BOUGHT THEM ALL, JUST IN CASE. fucking hell.

Leeds festival three years back- after stood in a field for three days , witnessing 'punk' (please) careerists preach their goodness - Grandaaddy were a welcome breath of fresh air and wholesome goodness.

ZOMG, this album still rules

the slowest of growers.

but this is ten times the album 'the sophtware slump' is. it's just heartbreakingly good. and to think i dismissed it the first few times i listened to it.

I don't think I could disagree more. I always felt like Sumday really simplified and streamlined the best parts of Sophtware Slump. Its a great little album, but I feel like it misses some of the unexpectedness of the previous.

it took the emotional cortex of TSS and turned it into a panoramic, low-key immersion within such depths, only haltingly explored beforehand. it works really well as an album, and the songs feed from one another.

meh, i thought this album was a total disappointment. sophtware slump's 100x better and so is under the western freeway. the earlier eps are better too. sumday is when i stopped following this band

and i really like sumday. no way it's better than sophtware.

sophtware has high highs but aside from the first track and the last two tracks (which are basically one awesome 10-minute track) there's nothing which hits me like basically all of sumday does. sumday's weakest two tracks are the first two, and they were the singles! i mean they're still really good, but from 3 onward it's just this sumptuous, tragic ode to loss...it hits me where it hurts, y'know

It is a beautiful and sad album, but not as beautiful and sad as the one before it, thats all!

we are learning some basic lessons here, jagger. lesson one is always be positive about what you want to be positive about. lesson two is don't be negative to something other than what you are being positive about in order to make what you are being positive about seem better. with these two simple lessons you too can be a happy friendly ilxor and not get sb'd again

so yeah, sumday is awesome! anyone got a favourite track? mine is 'lost on yer merry way' which is beautiful and epic

^^ i more or less agree with this. I never heard Fambly and I'm having a hard time rememembering anything off Freeway besides that song that sounds like Weezer blue album era. but yeah, Sophtware and Sumday are both pretty great

i am not 100% sure but i think my fave of theirs was the broken down comforter collection which comprises two early eps. melodious psychedelic rock wonderland. most of the other stuff i have heard by them including [/i]the sophtware slump[/i] was too soft, too effete for my likes iirc.

I also thought Sumday was a disappointment compared with Grandaddy's previous work. Just too bland for me. I stopped listening to them around then.

I like Grandaddy/Lytle quite a bit, but for me his stuff since "Sophtware" has been weighted down by too many samey-sounding piano ballads.

Their drummer is one of rock's dullest.

yeah, they are a rhythmically uninteresting band -- don't think it's the drummer's fault though. He had to play along to Lytle's drum machine demos, I believe. They were more exciting live.

I loved this band and saw them live a number of times, which is where they cut it best.

A tiny club in Sheffield had them sharing the postage stamp sized stage with a self-planted forest. The last time was at the Leeds Festival about five years ago just before they split. Lytle was angry about the real punk rock emanating from the main stage in between his songs. From memory it was Sum 41 .

I thought their drummer at least looked great. Swigging from a 1.5 litre bottle of wine as he nailed his relentless 4/4.That takes something

But, to me, they HAD lost something by Sumday and blew the whole lot with Fambly Cat. Too samey

having a sophtware revival.

Insane! "I'm On Standby" is one of their best! I actually feel legit sadness for the robot in this song. The second "I'll be down for some time" is just crushing for some reason

that is a stupid opinion yes and it must be hoped that whoever expressed it seven years ago has now recanted

Not really getting a lot out of this new album. It sounds as forgettable as his solo albums.

Thread made me pull out Sumday for the first time in years. Still love it. I'd forgotten how much acoustic guitar is on this album!

Will probably eventually check out the new one despite the lukewarm response here

At the time Sophtware felt like The Classic One, and Sumday felt like a bunch of pretty good tunes that all sounded the same. But I'll happily listen to Sumday and the TSS feels like way too much effort to me now.

The two robot Jed songs on TSS still slay me, especially the poem song. Prefer Sumday to TSS, though.

Can't stand the Jed songs, personally. They really make Sophtware Slump a slog for me. The Jed song on the new one is mercifully short, at least.

oh yeah kind of. not as egregious as some but there's certainly the same mouthfeel

Starlight is definitely more caffeinated, but the piano bit is similar to the gyitar bit and those arpeggios...

It's not their strongest album but the highs (the preview tracks + This Is The Part) are delightful. Turns out A Lost Machine is kind of amazing

I like the first tracks very much. They remind me of the first time I heard grandaddy and excitedly played Sophtware/Sumday all night through headphones on an iRiver mp3 player. 'A Lost Machine' is not working for me yet.

Oh yeah the first three are great. Whole album growing with each listen

Maybe Evermore is the standout?

Not a single standout on this great great album for me. Such an amazing hangover of an album. After the sophtware died, and they tried and failed to sober up, and this is what happened. It's like getting a blue screen after a hard reset. Head aching and hung over on the porch, in the scorching sun. Passed out in a Datsun. I will defend this album to the teeth.

it's nice iin that this album just feels like a logical next album, not like some big reunion thing after years with loads of expectations

Sumday was the first Grandaddy album I disliked. Just listened again and don't get it. The Sophtware Slump was their high point for me.

New album is mediocre at best. 'Evermore' a sordid attempt at grasping at past heights. Saying it's Deserter's Songs II and much, much better than that is just challops.

Yeah, I am not getting the hype for the new album at all. I can't find one memorable song on there. Sumday is enjoyable, but was a massive step down after Under The Western Freeway and The Sophtware Slump.
