C90: Laurie Anderson

Amazingly, this hasn't been done (or so it seems).

So what'll it be?

Blue Lagoon
Born, Never Asked
Coolsville
Four, Three, Two, One
Going Somewhere?
Gravity's Angel
Hiawatha
Kokoku
Let X=X
Lighting Out for the Territories
New Jersey Turnpike
O Superman (For Massenet)
Over The River
Radar
Sharkey's Day
Strange Angels
The Big Top
The Visitors
White Lily
World Without End

An honorable mention to "It's Not The Bullet That Kills You (It's The Hole)". If I got one of those lucky C90s that actually had a little extra slack, I might sneak it on, but I just couldn't sacrifice anything else to make room for 3:47 of goofy bluegrass-pop about Chris Burden.

OMG WHERE IS 'FROM THE AIR'???????

Space Gourmand (Haberdager), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 22:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Nothing at all from The Ugly One With The Jewels? That seems odd.

Wow, I totally flaked on "From the Air."

And, no, I wasn't blown away by Ugly One.

Make yr own damn lists, complainers :-)

I'd have to stick "Dance of Electricity" on there, from United States Live. (It's the one about the feud between Tesla and Edison.)

needs more tracks from strange angels. babydoll and beautiful red dress for starters

Needs way more tracks from Bright Red. 'The Tightrope' for ex. is essential.

I'm a hater of "Babydoll." It's the cutesiest, most self-conscious thing in her catalogue.

"Beautiful Red Dress" is fine, but it's not in my top 90 minutes.

I think it's safe to say that I'm not a fan of much of her work after 1990 to begin with...

"My Eyes" is so gorgeous.

I much prefer her spoken word stuff to her songs, so I'd include at least three or four from Ugly One.

that's more of a C120, if I had more space I'd throw in kokoku and new jersey turnpike

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 21 September 2006 21:40 (seventeen years ago) link

You know, I never bothered to investigate if the versions of "Tightrope" and "Speak My Language" were different on Faraway, So Close.

I wrestled with the early Jukebox stuff you included, but there was too much I liked from United States...

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:06 (seventeen years ago) link

united states is kinda mix-disruptive, I like it but you've got to give yourself over

the versions of faraway are beautiful acoustic versions, stripped down extensions of strange angels without the production overkill, I was hoping bright red was going to be more like that. they're definitely worth owning, I have them on a cassette somewhere.

never heard world on a string, someday I'll check it out. the production on her recent records distances me a bit but I still love her stories, her voice, the live performances.

I stay far away from Life on a String.

Although I saw her just after 9/11 and she was doing almost the entirety of Big Science in concert again (with a show-off drummer who overplayed the shit out of everything and walked all over the songs). I never miss one of her concerts or lectures ... and fortunately, she does a lot of them in Boston.

Myke. (Myke Weiskopf), Thursday, 21 September 2006 23:57 (seventeen years ago) link

The NASA show she did was really something - sparse, spooky, austere.

I don't think I could do her justice in less than 2 CDs worth.

When I was cleaning out my basement last night I found a tape of her Eugene Oregon show from 1984!!! I have no idea where it came from (group house, lots of folks lived here, etc.).

Those two songs on the Faraway So Close OST own the album versions and are probably her two best songs, period. Great use of acoustic double-bass.

five months pass...

I bought the Talk Normal anthology in Los Angeles because I don't actually own any Laurie Anderson. I like it a lot but I feel like I'm missing out by not hearing these tracks in their album context. Where next? I like the sound of "The Ugly One...".
