"Noise For Music's Sake" is the best of, sampling a bit from each era. If you don't want to buy a compilation, I'd start at the beginning - "Scum".

Marmot (marmotwolof), Sunday, 20 August 2006 02:26 (6 years ago) Permalink

marmot OTM. start at the beginning and go forward.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 20 August 2006 02:51 (6 years ago) Permalink

Start with Scum if you want to hear the proto grind stuff they're famous for, but in my opinion those records with Lee didn't age too well. Harmony Corruption might be a controversial recommendation, but it is mine nonetheless. Barney Greenway really saved that band from the curious gimmick they might have been.

Wand Milius (Roger Fidelity), Sunday, 20 August 2006 03:21 (6 years ago) Permalink

The Complete BBC Sessions disc is a nice overview, too.

vartman (novaheat), Sunday, 20 August 2006 04:55 (6 years ago) Permalink

you need everything up through Harmony Corruption, but yeah the BBC Sessions make up a real nice intro. plus you get the Siege cover.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Sunday, 20 August 2006 04:59 (6 years ago) Permalink

and there's an SOB cover or two.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 20 August 2006 06:38 (6 years ago) Permalink

I think the "Hardcore Holocaust" compilation of Peel Session tracks from Napalm Death / Extreme Noise Terror / Doom / Intense Degree / Stupids / Electro Hippies / Unseen Terror (I think) is all you need, really.

Clumsy Colin in ACTION BIKER (coach_mcguirk), Sunday, 20 August 2006 08:22 (6 years ago) Permalink

first two albums and hardcore holocaust. that's about it.

simon 803 (simon 803), Sunday, 20 August 2006 08:43 (6 years ago) Permalink

aren't doctor and the crippens on hardcore holocaust? or am i thinking of north atlantic noise assault...

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Sunday, 20 August 2006 08:53 (6 years ago) Permalink

Napalm have gotten better since the Barney lineup solidified. Start with Noise For Music's Sake, then if you're hooked start digging through the whole discography, but the first two albums are really not all they're cracked up to be.

Are there really only 2 Napalm Death threads on ILM, or is my search function insane?

Has anyone watched the Napalm Death minidoc on YouTube called Grindcore Select?

roxymuzak, Monday, 6 August 2007 02:38 (5 years ago) Permalink

Actually, it's called Grindcore Special Issue, and here it is:

Is that Pintado with the massive veil of black hair? He looks like a baby in this!

I have seen this.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 6 August 2007 02:52 (5 years ago) Permalink

I went through a ND frenzy back in like March and got like 5 records over the course of a week.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 6 August 2007 02:53 (5 years ago) Permalink

i used to own 'greed killing', which i sold. since then i've purchased 'scum' which i enjoy a lot more, and which i imagine is a more fitting introduction to the style they're championed for.

SCUM is getting me warmed up for the weekend.

Trip Maker, Friday, 2 November 2007 20:17 (5 years ago) Permalink

Will you be going on a violent rampage over the weekend?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 2 November 2007 20:19 (5 years ago) Permalink

I listened to "Fear, Emptiness, Despair" a LOT in college. Haven't heard them in ages.

Drew Daniel, Friday, 2 November 2007 20:21 (5 years ago) Permalink

Little guitar solo on the 23 second 'Parasites' is awesome.

SCUM

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 2 November 2007 20:42 (5 years ago) Permalink

SCUM - absolute landmark. Amazing live experience at that time.

Soukesian, Friday, 2 November 2007 21:29 (5 years ago) Permalink

Youtube took down that video already :(

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 2 November 2007 21:30 (5 years ago) Permalink

I listened to the album scum again recently. It's way slower and the vocals are much more clear than I remember. I guess because Anal Cunt style grindcore has tainted my perceptions.

filthy dylan, Saturday, 3 November 2007 04:36 (5 years ago) Permalink

Aw, that video was truly somethin' special!

roxymuzak, Saturday, 3 November 2007 06:57 (5 years ago) Permalink

i'm happy to see some love for Harmony Corruption upthread. i have the video for Suffer the Children on my HD and watch it all the time. as much as i liked the early stuff, i listened to my Death by Manipulation tape more than anything else. Mass Appeal Madness is an awesome song.

i haven't heard anything by them since Fear Emptiness Despair, which I didn't like at all.

rockapads, Saturday, 3 November 2007 08:23 (5 years ago) Permalink

"smear campaign" was surprisingly good. as close to the early stuff as i think they're capable of getting.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Saturday, 3 November 2007 09:14 (5 years ago) Permalink

Utopia Banished gets my vote for best "middle-era" ND. Better than Harmony Corruption and much, much better than Fear Emptiness Despair.

Siegbran, Sunday, 4 November 2007 00:51 (5 years ago) Permalink

Their last few albums have been great, Smear Campaign especially.

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 4 November 2007 01:27 (5 years ago) Permalink

I was also a big fan of "Smear Campaign." Bought the shirt and everything.

xpost!

Right: kill me for ignoring them. I suppose I had this idea of them that satisfied me enough to like them so much so as to NOT get round to anything they ever did.

Worked my way through SCUM which, from a Harry Pussy et al perspective is actually kinda flabby at points? But the Peel Sessions I think I'll love and treasure forever. Almost nothing that's over a minute with those screams/machine gun drumming/pounding riffs all timed perfectly -- and there is a sense of precision that needs to be met head on every time, and that's what stops this from being classed as a gimmick.

Steven Wells' writing on them is some of my fave on any band ever. Wish I had some of those articles right now.

xyzzzz__, Sunday, 23 November 2008 20:32 (4 years ago) Permalink

by "flabby" do you mean the a-side (broadrick/bullen/harris) stuff?

Scum is amazing, and makes me want to hear more of this stuff. So this seems as good a thread as any to ask: where to start with the Electro Hippies?

The Peel Session.

"Little girl is crying, cus all the sheep are dead..."

Mark G, Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:02 (4 years ago) Permalink

Thanks. The only thing on Amazon (apart from dls) is a CD compilation, going for at least £65 second hand!

zero learnt from nero (Neil S), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:12 (4 years ago) Permalink

re Electro Hippies I think pretty much everything you need is on The Only Good Punk Is A Dead One CD

Also get Repulsion - Horrified double CD right fuckin now

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:14 (4 years ago) Permalink

Dunno if this link is still active - it's their only album with a load of bonus tracks: http://lucidmedia.blogspot.com/2008/05/electro-hippies-only-good-punk-is-dead.html

WTF I saw that CD the other day for like 4 or 5 quid!

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:15 (4 years ago) Permalink

Other early grind I love:

Terrorizer - World Downfall
Fear Of God - 7"
Extreme Noise Terror - split with Chaos UK, Holocaust In Your Head
Sore Throat - And We Don't Care
S.O.B. - lots of stuff but it's all hard to find apart from on Slsk

then there's all that hyperspeed HC that borders on it:

Siege - Drop dead
Heresy - Face up to it
Ripcord - Hardcore
Infest - Slave
etc etc

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:20 (4 years ago) Permalink

First BOLT THROWER was good too.

Enemy Insects (NickB), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:22 (4 years ago) Permalink

the electro hippies stuff has been reissued a number of times, sometimes with different titles.

also poo's list is pretty good. i'd add septic death tho.

YAWNN 0))) (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:22 (4 years ago) Permalink

Yeah that goes in the etc etc :)

also other Earache stuff from the time that borders on death metal like aforementioned Bolt Thrower, Carcass, Cadaver etc

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 21 May 2009 13:24 (4 years ago) Permalink

Cool, thanks all. That Electro Hippies comp is on Spotify, so I'lll give it a listen there.

I can't imagine any fan of theirs being disappointed.

Frozen_Warnings, Monday, 27 February 2012 21:33 (1 year ago) Permalink

I've heard it, didn't like it much, but then again I'm not really a fan of theirs. On the other hand, I wrote this thing last year on music that may have inspired Scum that might make some people think I'm a fan:
