Heard "Work Song" while watching an episode of Weeds and thought it was good and funny. How's his self-titled album?

No-one?

A friend of mine is a big fan of this album. He played it once for me on a road trip last year, "Work Song" is the only one that has stuck in my mind to this day. Probably cause it's so easy to learn the lyrics. He hand-builds all his instruments, I remember the booklet showed the different hand-built guitar for each song. Given that, it's a bit rough and sparse sounding, sorta like his voice. There are a few other sarcastically humourous ones on there but it's not a laff fest by any means.

It is phenomenal, especially if you like the John Prine school of folk with yuck yucks. He's a witty guy, Dan Reeder.

I heard Dan Reeder the other day in my friend's car, and thought it was fantastic. Funny, sad, weird-- you rarely hear music like this.

I just bought his first album, and wow, this is one of the best albums i've heard in years. it's so stripped down and immediate in a way that nobody is anymore. it's so refreshing to hear something that isn't cluttered with production wizardry and unnecessary layers of musical flourishes. and the songs are memorable, touching, and occasionally funny in this it's-funny-but-i-know-he's-not-really-joking way. it's like a modern-day Smithsonian Anthology of Folk record.

is anthony harrison-friday Anthony Kyle Monday's cousin?

Dan Reeder is the illegitimate bastard lovechild of Daniel Johnston and Black Francis. What a riot -- seek both albums.

Can't believe no on is talking about this. Love the first album, can't wait to get my hands on the second.

I'm listening to these AMG samples and they're pretty great. If there ever was a moment that I felt unconvinced I need to further seek one of his albums, it vanished as soon as I realized he has a song called Pussy Titty. Game over.

Despite the vulgarities, I find the lyrics motivated by simple concepts more than the desire to be funny. Take "Food & Pussy" for example, which is a dialogue written in a call & response manner:

What do you want? / I want food and pussy / How come? / It's just the way god made me / Is it alright? / I guess it's okay / Shoo bop bop bop shang a lang a lang lang

I may have gotten the exact lyrics wrong, but it never feels so much like a comic delivery as much as a basic description of his human motivations. It feels honest, not crass. The funny part is actually that he is so blunt about something that many people would not be upfront about.

Finally listening to the second album. Not bad, but I like the first one better. Still, I can't deny that "I Drink Beer" and "Cowboy Song" are classics. As is "You'll Never Surf Again."

Sigh, in a righteous world, "Havana Burning" and "Clean Elvis" would be on everyone's playlists.
