also, still the only song that I can really remember from that album ... but it's totally stuck with me for about 15 years now so I guess that says something.. it's that wonderful "oooh la la la" chorus.

I realise that I should justify this with some wordy references or something, but I can't
Good Tune and I know there are more . Thanks for reminding me to dig back in to my dusty Clean vaults

Good lord, people, how can you overlook his Great Unwashed brilliance of "Neck Of The Woods" and "Can't Find Water"??

i really like "uplift" which was on the "12 hours fast" compilation. a bath in shimmering psychedelic pop. the title does not deceive. and the aforementioned "you forget", a pop gem which is on that new zealand comp as well.

Here come the Cars was one of my favorite albums in high school and It's still Classic. Also 'This Chord' from the Killing Capitalism with Kindness is beautiful.
― Jacob Sanders, Saturday, 15 August 2009 16:37 (3 years ago) Permalink
I think "Can't Find Water" was actually written/sung by peter gutteridge. Still awesome though.
He seems to have moved away from producing really poppy songs in the last decade or so. Late 80s-Early 90s DK put out brilliant pop song after brilliant pop song though. And he still has some great ones scattered throughout, like "Today is Gonna be Mine."
Has anybody Heard this "Falling Debris" album?
― Dr. Johnson (askance johnson), Saturday, 15 August 2009 16:52 (3 years ago) Permalink
I haven't listened to him in years, are his recent albums on Merge records worth finding?
― Jacob Sanders, Saturday, 15 August 2009 16:54 (3 years ago) Permalink
no. he's mucked everything up. it seemed as if with here come the cars, sugar mouth, modern rock, he was evolving into this stately pop songwriter but then he took a turn into murkiness where the songs sound terrible and are mostly dull and uninteresting. the upcoming clean album is an absolute chore to listen to.
― keythkeythkeyth, Saturday, 15 August 2009 17:00 (3 years ago) Permalink
Um, disagree. For me, "Here Come The Cars" and "Sugarmouth" are a mixed bag whereas "David Kilgour And The Heavy Eights" is 10/10 fantastic, not the least because of Barbara Manning's guest appearance, heavy indeed for overall tone with some drawn-out jams that really draw me in. "A Feather In The Engine" & "Frozen Orange" are admittedly growers but they've sprouted nicely over the years. "The Far Now" is great pop start to finish, nothing less.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 15 August 2009 21:43 (3 years ago) Permalink
I also disagree. "The Far Now" and "A Feather in the Engine" are both great, just a lot more laid back and subtle than some of his earlier stuff. Never got into "Frozen Orange" for some reason. Also, his live was mind-blowing when I saw him a couple years ago.
I will admit that what I've heard of the new Clean album hasn't exactly floored me.
― Dr. Johnson (askance johnson), Saturday, 15 August 2009 21:56 (3 years ago) Permalink
yeah, he is awesome awesome awesome live. Kilgour might be my favorite guitarist ever.
― tylerw, Saturday, 15 August 2009 22:49 (3 years ago) Permalink
Ok, I finally picked up "Here Come The Cars" and "Sugarmouth" and I don't know what I was thinking - these are brilliant.
Which is annoying because it brings into question any negative judgement I've ever had. If all it takes is time to like something does that mean we'll like everything eventually? A different thread.

not coming anywhere near me, which is a bummer. love both of these guys, though i haven't heard all of buckner's new one. kilgour's newest is fabulous.

Really great show last night - five-ish songs with ... Tony de Raad from the Heavy Eights, I think, then the rest of the set backed by Christchurch band Salad Boys, who're firmly that 80s Nun drone/jangle tradition. Really great mix of new & old solo/band material - "Christopher Columbus", "Diamond Mine", "A Break In The Weather", "In The Dreamlife You Need A Rubber Soul" & one of his songs w/Sam Hunt, as well as "Draw(in)g To A (W)hole", "Anything Could Happen", "Getting Older", etc.Surprised/delighted to hear the Great Unwashed's "What U Should Be Now":

― tylerw, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 17:59 (1 week ago) Permalink
it's an awesome song. Left by Soft struck me as very Byrds-ian, and CC is Byrds-ian too, but in an almost entirely different way. Like I feel like the song kind of captures the sort of mood of pastoral folk-rock but I feel like Kilgour is deftly avoiding the usual folk-rock vocabulary. To these ears, he's doing something quite different here.
