The Future of Outkast

Idlewild... are you excited or afraid. I just read an article in vibe where andre says hes "hating making music right now" which is shitty because he doesn't seem like that good an actor (be cool trailer?). I love outkast, especially pre-stankonia but I'm scared that the thrill is gone. I wish had andre 3000 hadn't dated erykah badu (rap's yoko ono). Mighty O is alright but Big Boi and Andre's verses seem lazy. Also it worries me that they were having trouble finding a single because outkast always comes with the monster jams especially in the summer. Tell me what you think.

I'm afraid. Hold me.
i haven't felt this way about a new release since the 3rd roni size album!!!

It's kinda like MJ coming back after playing baseball, and you were really excited 'cause, you know, it's Jordan, but at the same time it's like... what if he's not really that good? because you would have spent the last year of your life obsessing about a single guy for no real reason and then he comes back and his first season is-good-but-not-Jordan and then Nick Anderson talks some shit and all of a sudden the 23 is back and Holy Shit the Bulls went 72-10.

max (maxreax), Friday, 23 June 2006 05:15 (seventeen years ago) link

The question was " idlewild... are you afraid or excited." I forgot a question mark, sue me, I'm drunk.

I wouldn't be worried (as is said on those two other threads) that "The Mighty O" isn't as good as "Hey Ya". The pre-release singles for SB/TLB were "She Lives In My Lap" and "Church", remember?
Both those songs are great (and it was "Ghettomusick", not "Church").

It's Rodney, pimp! (R. J. Greene), Friday, 23 June 2006 07:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh ok. "Church" was in a Madden game before the record came out, that's what I was thinking of. And yeah, those songs are great ("She Lives" is one of my favorites on TLB) but they weren't BIG MASSIVE HIT material and neither is this. Outkast might be sitting on something big, they might not. I'm not going to take "The Mighty O" as an indication of either just yet.
I'm not that impressed by Gnarls Barkley, but on Cee-Lo Green Is the soul Machine Cee-Lo did surpass Outkast in their own game. So he might just as well be the future.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 23 June 2006 08:25 (seventeen years ago) link

That's the CD that Stephin Merritt turned of a few seconds into one song. I wonder what he thinks of Gnarls Barkley and "Crazy".

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 23 June 2006 08:42 (seventeen years ago) link

"The Mighty O" IS the official single, and the next one will be a solo Big Boi joint .

after reading this , it's hard to be optimistic - even Outkast dont't think "The Mighty O" is all that, but had to release it 'coz it's apparently the only "Idlewild" track they recorded together. as for "Dré's crooned contributions, largely inspired by swing-era jazz"... ugh.

I can understand not everyone jumping on "The Love Below"....it's a rock album, but please...there is nothing wrong with Speakerboxx.

ed slanders (edslanders), Friday, 23 June 2006 09:54 (seventeen years ago) link

In fact, Speakerboxxx is much MUCH better than TLB, mostly because it's shorter and to the pointer, and also because it's a real collaborative record. Maybe Andre has a great Prince/Stevie style album in him, but TLB (despite it's considerable highs) sure ain't it.

Also, I liked his acting in "The Shield" and "Four Brothers."

It's a funk record. If you really think it's an unprecedented achievement, I recommend such obscurities as "1999", "Sign O The Times" "One Nation Under a Groove" "Talking Book" and "Control"

No need to be condescending. Did I say it was an unprecedented achievement? No. But, cmon, it's not just a funk record. There are splashes of hip-hop, pop, rock, soul, jazz and electronica (ugh, horrible word), and a playfullness and unpredictability at work which I personally find, yes, thrilling. Granted, Prince was juggling all these genres twenty-odd years ago, but Andre is certainly not just apeing him; his personality is stamped all over the album.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Friday, 23 June 2006 15:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Aren't there splashes of all those things in Big Boi's record too? Except it had more good songs.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 23 June 2006 15:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, there are, as there have pretty much always been in Outkast's music (and I'm not belittling Speakerboxx AT ALL, it's a great record), but Big Boi's still using more of a hip-hop template, whereas Andre's going into areas that can barely be called hip-hop at all. I'll just add that, technically, Speakerboxx probably is a 'better' album (tighter, less filler), it's just that I find Andre's experimentation more exciting and intruiging - and I think he pulled it off with far less self-indulgence than could be expected.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Friday, 23 June 2006 15:36 (seventeen years ago) link

I agree with deej here. I appreciate that Andre was being possibly more ambitious, it just fell kinda flat for me. Genre-defying I guess I'll give him, but the thrillingness was too sporadic.

Anyway I'm pretty sure the consenus at this point is otm. I dont see the two of them reuniting which is fine, they have a large and great back catalogue and I certainly don't expect them to go on forever. Plus Big Boi's purple ribbon shit, although hit or miss, has been pretty great when it hits.

deej.. (deej..), Friday, 23 June 2006 15:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I think its over for them. You can't expect anybody to make interesting music when they're publicly admitting that they aren't excited about making music. As far as Dre goes, its like he feels he blew his wad with "The Love Below", an album which, frankly, tries to hard and only sometimes succeeds. I don't think it reaches the heights of any of its most obvious predecessors (ie, Prince, Stevie, etc.) and he must feel that on some level.

They had a great run tho, truly something unprecedented in hip-hop.

I wish had [sic] andre 3000 hadn't dated erykah badu (rap's yoko ono).

Give me a fucking break. She was with Andre 3000 - and they broke up - long before there were "problems" in his relationship with Big Boi. And she dated Common, too. So fucking what?

Oh, and for unfortunately-not-the-last-fucking-time, Yoko did NOT break up the Beatles. Their egos did. This is just ignorant bullshit.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Friday, 23 June 2006 16:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah that's a strange connection to make. Besides, both Outkast tunes with a Badu guest spot are fantastic.

Ps Cheers Austin, no offence taken.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Friday, 23 June 2006 16:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, I take that statement back, I was mostly kidding, besides without erykah we wouldn't have "Mrs. Jackson" (or Baduizm for that matter) and I know Ono is just a scapegoat for dumb fanboys. I just think Lennon/Andre's relationships with Ono/Badu widened rifts that were already there, you can't blame them, love changes people. I know it's not Badu's fault but I just really, really miss the old Andre (when he was still dope and liked making music/didn't think he was too good for rapping) and it's easy to blame her for it whether it's fair or not. But fuck it I loved hey ya just like everybody did, Andre can do whatever the hell he wants as long as he keeps making music.

Jesse Wilson (Uncle Fester), Friday, 23 June 2006 17:56 (seventeen years ago) link

but it doesn't sound like he's going to keep making music. (Honestly, I expect some kind of typically depressing downward slide for him...)

Yeah, I'm pretty much too old to get really worked up about this stuff (like when Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan split and left me in a depressed daze for days), but something about that article really makes me sad.

I would really, really, recommend anyone missing Outkast searching deeper into the catalog. As well as the four Goodie Mob albums, which I think are the equal of the Outkast albums, there are amazing albums from Witchdoctor, Jim Crow, Backbone, Slimm Calhoun, Cool Breeze, Killer Mike, Big Gipp....
I often find Organized Noise production the most interesting thing about Oukast - and all of those albums (mostly) share that production...

If I'm ordering them as a rap fan though, I'd say atliens and southern are better verse for verse than the later two (for me stankonia is their last album). Though aquemini is their most versatile as rappers. They really did a lot of incredible stuff on there as a rap group. Stankonia is more just about the songs.

I'm glad they finished and stopped making music after stankonia. It's like tribe ending it in 94 (though I love the love movement). Or de la after buhloone. They stopped being a group on a high point. Its like a canon obsessed music critic (maybe that is dre 3000) was in charge of their career.

As for trying too hard, I should clarify. I mean, making music that sounds very self conscious. Again, not a bad thing, and i like hey ya, those gwen Stefani songs, and other stuff, but at the time I just thought it was a bit too aware of itself, of what it is. But I should give these albums another chance. Not returned to them in years
