I don't think I've ever seen a film where the first half (pretty damn good) suddenly nose dives into pretty damn awful so sharply.
The acting is generally good by the people in the bands (Steve Jones could certainly have done acting 'himself' full time, in comparison to the Ramones' acting in R&RHighSchool), but the story suddenly loses it when it tries to 'support' the kids in a 'going for it' sense. Why a whole audience should suddenly go "gosh, I did spend all my money on merchandise like the support band said, let's riot against the band we love" cringe.
The ending actually did sort of make sense. Ray Winstone's character did stress that all they needed was more practice and concentration, which resulted in the 'MTV video' version at the end suggesting some sort of success.
Possibly so much of it looks bad, because so much of it seems right, at the same time. A real curate's egg, in other words.
