Robert Fripp - Exposure 2 CD reissue

just took a long lunch with my friend Tom driving around to this, so great to be listening to the original mix of this record again, neither of us had heard it for years, too lazy to drag out our vinyl

without any doubt this is my favorite thing he's ever done. the concise, incendiary fucked up metric rock, Fripp's multitracked guitars, the tone on his leads blending with streams of Frippertronic ambience, the genre hopping from track to track, the weird weird songs, this is everything he does on fire

the dealbreaker for me with almost all Crimson is always the vocals (except the first one), but this album gives you Peter Hammil, Terre Roche, Peter Gabriel, and one other guy

even if you have an unpleasant nature and dislike people, this is no obstacle to work

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 15 June 2006 21:36 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm really surprised you dislike Hall's vocals so much. I think his take on Mary is much better than Terre Roache's annoying "sisteRRRRR"

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 15 June 2006 21:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Put all your previous thoughts about Daryl Hall aside, he really shines on Exposure.

Jeff K (jeff k), Thursday, 15 June 2006 21:48 (seventeen years ago) link

also apparently the album was originally entitled "the last great NY heartthrob" which might make the Hall vocals make more sense.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 15 June 2006 21:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i hope he puts out "under heavy manners" somewhere now.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 15 June 2006 21:51 (seventeen years ago) link

that is not my favorite track on this album, but the number of shifts on it make me love it precisely because of the parts of it that I hate

I will admit to an extreme allergy to Hall in general, I think this record was saved when Hammil re-recorded most of his tracks. But Hammil is the anti-Hall, it might be a very small subset of people to whom both vocalists appeal

having the 2 versions of this album on 2 discs is a good move -- Hammil fans of noise get disc 1, Hall fans get disc 2

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 15 June 2006 22:03 (seventeen years ago) link

is there not room in your soul for "One on One" and "Fracture"? vive la you know what!

veronica moser (veronica moser), Friday, 16 June 2006 01:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Consider me in that small subset. Jon, it's a shame you don't care for Hall -- he positively makes the record, even in his brief appearance on the original record. I can remember the first time I heard Exposure -- I was all of 16 and for all the obvious weirdness of Hammill's vocals ("Delicate OB-SCEN-I-TIES!!"), it was "North Star" that actually tested me and my sense of taste. At the time, I was impressed by his deployment of Hall but not really by Hall himself.

But then it hit me that what makes the track is the contrast between Fripp's stark guitar accompaniment and Hall's virtuosically florid soul melismas -- particularly, when you realize that Hall's speaking a language and channeling something Fripp could never express himself. Exposure, indeed.

Here's a long interview with Fripp about the record: http://www.dgmlive.com/dl.php?tickle=yes&track=1202

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 16 June 2006 02:52 (seventeen years ago) link

i think hall's vocal on Disengage on the second disc is completely awesome and unhinged, and sounds an awful lot like Hammill's retake; it's Hammill following Hall here.

Incidentally, the above's a radio interview -- and it's got to be the definitive interview on this stuff. He discusses a discotronics song I've never heard of with The Roches singing called, "Ooooh, Mr. Fripp". He says it's "excellent" -- I'd like to hear it.

An ex-bandmate of mine asked Fripp who was the best vocalist he ever worked with and he told her Darryl Hall.

Edward III (edward iii), Friday, 16 June 2006 18:24 (seventeen years ago) link

considering some of the Crimso vocalists, that's not really saying much. "Better than Boz? I don't believe you!"

-- Naive Teen Idol

"Ooh! Mr. Fripp" is one of the tracks on Thrang Thrang Gozinbulx, that excellent live League Of Gentlemen LP. But unfortunately, that entire album is totally instrumental; so even if it's the same track, it's NOT the same. (Damn, now I wanna hear that that Roches track too!)

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Saturday, 17 June 2006 03:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, I realized this sometime afterwards myself. I have that record, but not this.

FWIW, in that interview, you have to hear how he says, "oooooohhh, Mistah Fripp!" It's outstanding; Fripp is unabashedly flirting his ass off with the interviewer, who seems totally unfazed by the ludicrousness of his whole "Drive to 1981"/nervous breakdown/new age mumbo jumbo. She tries to end the interview, but he insists on sticking around -- he clearly thinks his schtick works with this woman. And who knows? Maybe it did...

i only know the vinyl version of 'disengage', but i always loved the song. Yeah, i agree with this, preferring Hall doing something different to Hammill as usual.

I always loved all the different directions of this lp except for the Peter Gabriel thingey (though i like the Fripp-produced PG2).

One of my favourite lps.

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 17 June 2006 10:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Weird. I have been on vacation for a week and off of the internet, but I was rocking this record a lot about two weeks ago. My copy credits both Hall and Hammill and I am very confused about this rerecording thing which I have not previously heard about. I thought Hall sang on my copy.

Rerelease is exciting indeed. The title track is one of my favorite vocal performances.

Greatest album ever. OK, top ten, at least.

Also, could never choose between Hammill and Hall. Two of the finest singers to ever step into a vocal booth. I think there's more crossover in those fanbases than you might think.

Exposure now on Spotify, along with two Soundscape releases. Fripp/Eno, Fripp/Cross and Sylvian/Fripp releases had been added already in the past weeks.

Captain Corelli's Mandalorian (WmC), Saturday, 16 November 2019 14:53 (four years ago) link

which version of Exposure did they put up?

akm, Saturday, 16 November 2019 17:12 (four years ago) link

(and Damage...assuming it's the second version of that)

akm, Saturday, 16 November 2019 17:13 (four years ago) link

xp 2-disc version. I don't know the difference btw versions of Damage.

Captain Corelli's Mandalorian (WmC), Saturday, 16 November 2019 18:05 (four years ago) link

one is a complete remix and may even have some different takes on it and also includes a different song or two but I can't recall off the top of my head what; song order completely different as well. the first one out was handled by Fripp and Sylvian did the second one. I vastly prefer the first one but that may only be because I was so familiar with it.

akm, Saturday, 16 November 2019 18:10 (four years ago) link

They also have The First Day, and Damage is a live album with much of the same material, from what I read.

Captain Corelli's Mandalorian (WmC), Saturday, 16 November 2019 18:20 (four years ago) link

That's awesome.

Yes, it's the 2-disc with the Daryl Hall vox.

Damage is, indeed, the second version which swaps out the (less long but still) long "Darshan" for the knotty "Jean the Birdman," has a lusher Sylvian mix instead of the more austere one by Fripp's guy and a slightly different running order.

The two Soundscapes releases are very good. At the End of Time is a compendium of his "Churchscapes" tour of British cathedrals which was incredible. As I've said elsewhere on ILM, after initially thinking Soundscapes was a pale digital imitation of Frippertronics, I've actually come to enjoy listening to them more. They are really intense and really deep -- and that tour (which I bought for super cheap on DGM) is their peak.

Some of the more recent Fripp and Eno is up as well. After initially being really disappointed in Equatorial Stars (tho I think I gave it a C, not a D IIRC), I came around. Beyond Even I haven't heard but based on the first few tracks it sounds like a lot of the working tapes during the 90s, with more beats, etc. That stuff is less essential.

Timing is good on all this as Sid Smith's KC biography is being updated and reissued this month.

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 17 November 2019 16:59 (four years ago) link

Sorry, WmC -- just realized you mentioned the Fripp and Eno. I'm pretty sure the Cross record was the only thing up for a long time but I hadn't seen anything else drop. So good to see -- I don't actually own most of these so I'll be I'll be looking forward to digging in.

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 17 November 2019 17:02 (four years ago) link

The Cross album is interesting (endless iterations on Starless) though maybe not as interesting as it should be. I'd still be down with seeing Cross rejoin the current KC lineup.

akm, Sunday, 17 November 2019 17:09 (four years ago) link

re: the two exposure versions, I'm still partial to the originally released version because of familiarity and I also like Peter Hammill yelping on Disengage, it sounds like a better fit to me, though the Hall version of Chicago is maybe better. Anyway, absolutely stonking classic album, one of the best albums Fripp ever released.

akm, Sunday, 17 November 2019 17:18 (four years ago) link

the version with Hall is actually the *third* version aiui. this webpage is good on the differences between the first and second versions, both of which feature Hammill on vocals on both Disengage and Chicago:

Is this basically what would have come out had Daryl Hall's management not intervened? If so, I hope it gets its own standalone release for those of us who can't splurge.

Beyond that, discs 1-4 sounds like mana for anyone who wants to play around with those loops.

correct, the original The League of Gentlemen LP is not included in this, for some reason. I read some explanation somewhere but it was weaksauce. There was plenty of room for it.

It wasn’t just Hall. I believe Debbie Harry was on Heartthrobs – perhaps doing I Feel Love? Fripp also supposedly shot the album cover at Radio City Music Hall of him with the Rockettes.

Notwithstanding the cost, I’m definitely franxious for this release.

I believe the new box set marks the first CD release of God Save the Queen / Under Heavy Manners. When I was in high school around 2004/05 and first getting into Fripp/Crimson, I went over to the house of a friend whose cool dad had a great record collection. He played us that record, which I had no idea existed, and the "Discotronics" side kind of blew my mind. More jerky new wave than disco and definitely proto-Discipline-era Crimson, complete with an extra-yelpy David Byrne on "Under Heavy Manners." So I'm rerally looking forward to the extended Discotronics sessions on this box...
