I have this subjectively compiled and fairly incomplete list of great (according to me) albums from 2000-2007. I'm working on 2008 and compiling 2009 as well. I'm wondering what, if anything, I should do with it. Make a tumblr and write dumb words? Sample clipz and album art? Infographs? Gigantic torrent?

....something non musical. i dont want to hear him anymore. i remember when he was in goodie mob and i used to think 'he should do an all singing album!' but after hearing the messes of his solo albums and the gnarls one, i now know i shouldnt have been granted my wish.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 13:13 (fourteen years ago) link

The act's name acts as a double backcronym. As explained on the track "Fighting" on Soul Food, Goodie Mob means "the GOOD DIE Mostly Over Bullshit". It is also a conscious homage and reference to the experimental UK collective The Goodies, whose release (Do The) Funky Gibbon had acquired cult status in Atlanta when the members were growing up. MC Bill Oddie has also been referenced in certain songs.

theres prob a good best of to be made from cee los solo material but his albums alone and with gnarls have been so patchy.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 13:51 (fourteen years ago) link

I think Both of Cee-Lo's solo albums were pretty ace! And there [i]is[i] a best of of his solo material, if you want to get just one record. The Gnarls Barkley albums were kinda disappointing though, at least after a brilliant single like Crazy. I think Cee-Lo should go back to doing self-produced solo material, as he's clearly better producing himself than Danger Mosue is.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 13:56 (fourteen years ago) link

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:apfyxq8rldde

I would recommend getting the solo albums instead of this comp though, as it veers towards the more poppy stuff and leaves out some of the more mindblowing stuff on the albums, such as "Glockappella", "Microhard", and "Big Ole Words".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAV0XrbEwNc

So any thoughts on the new single? I'm not sure if I'm all for the super retro sound, I liked the way he did some retro things with 00s rap beats on his previous solo album, but "Fuck You" is still pretty damn catchy. Now that he'd gotten rid of Danger Mouse, I have some pretty high expectations for the new album, "The Soul Machine" was one of my favourite records of the previous decade.

Tuomas, Friday, 20 August 2010 17:13 (thirteen years ago) link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3qCK88aRJk

Hmm, apparently this tune's on the new album too, doesn't sound quite as good. The chorus especially shows his limits as a singer. I'd say releasing a full retro soul album wouldn't be the best move for him, as his vocal chops aren't quite up for it. The half-rap/half-singing stuff on the previous two solo albums was better suited for his particular talent.

Tuomas, Friday, 20 August 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah music is pretty much straight Isaac Hayes (maybe a little Curtis Mayfield too?). pretty funny though. increasingly he seems like a novelty singles guy to me, altho I really like his first two records a lot. I never gave a shit about Dangermouse.

glitter hands! glitter hands! razzle! dazzle! (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 20 August 2010 17:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Funny, but I don't know if it would stand up to repeated listening. Would be a great song for someone to do as their audition on X Factor though.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Friday, 20 August 2010 17:21 (thirteen years ago) link

That's too bad, Cee-Lo has nice voice, but as a singer he's not even close to Curtis or anyone. And I really like some of his more adventurous beats on the previous solo albums (like "Microhard" or "Glockappella" or "Selling Soul"), can't imagine an Isaac Hayes pastiche working that well for him.

This stuff is a bit of a pity. He's still a better rapper than singer, and needs darkness, hardness and spareness to shine. Guess I just miss Organoize...

paulhw, Friday, 20 August 2010 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

If can allow a strange comparison that maybe isn't really so strange, he reminds me a bit of Harry Nilsson (both seem like friendly child-like dudes, working within a retro genre that they treat with both reverence and whimsicality, both write novelty songs (Shakey Mo upthread)) Lots of little similarities I see amidst the the obvious differences, like I could see Cee-Lo writing an album for children, too, ala "The Point!"

be my anchor baby (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 21 August 2010 02:53 (thirteen years ago) link

fuck you is a total novelty single. hes def not an albums artist. im not even sure he works as a solo artist either. regretting ever thinking he should have gone solo when he was in goodie mob now. as a singer he has a nice tone, a certain gravelly-ness, but his range (both as a singer and melodically) is a bit too limited for him to really pull off a lot of the stuff that he wants. people just seem to have bought into the 'hes a real soul voice' thing cos of gnarls.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 23 August 2010 10:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I wouldn't say his "not an album artist", IMO both of his previous solo albums worked quite nicely, and his self-produced beats have always been interesting, at the least. But I think on those records he knew his strengths and weaknesses, he was still rapping and didn't try to come across as a "pure singer" or anything. I agree that it's kinda sad if the Gnarls stuff convinced him he should become a latter day Baby Huey or something, because quite clearly that's beyond his capabilities.
