Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz sampled "Black Cow" in "Deja Vu."

Freeway's group Ice City's album had a great track called "Ride Up" with Joe Budden that was built on an awesome loop from "The Royal Scam."

awesome, im gonna track these down right now, thanks...did fagen/becker ever comment on this? were sd sampled more than other rock acts?

douglas eklund (skolle), Friday, 2 June 2006 00:56 (seventeen years ago) link

There is a segment on a DVD I was watching once, I believe it was the "Aja" episode of the "Clasic Albums" series, where Don and Walt are just sitting in a studio, going over all the tracks and talking about them. Anyway, they start playing "Black Cow", and then Fagen starts breaking into "Deja Vu" (Uptown baby, uptown baby...)

I couldn't stop laughing afterword. Pretty much the greatest thing I have ever seen.

chocolatepiekid (chocolatepiekid), Friday, 2 June 2006 01:04 (seventeen years ago) link

I vaguely remember Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz saying they wanted Steely Dan to go on TRL or something with them and perform a "Black Cow"/"Deja Vu" medley together and SD declining, and in general I think Fagen and Becker weren't too wild about the art of sampling, but I don't know any specific quotes offhand.

(xpost, that's hilarious, I've got to see that)

Is that Aja DVD worth picking up?

Here's the "Peg" Segment, see for yourself:

Wasn't the beginning of Rikki Don't Lose That Number a jazz sample?

Cunga (Cunga), Friday, 2 June 2006 01:56 (seventeen years ago) link

they're sampled on a hell of a lot of house records, too

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 2 June 2006 01:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Show Biz Kids is built around a 32 bar tape loop, so the Dan did get into a bit of old skool style sampling.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 2 June 2006 02:58 (seventeen years ago) link

there's one track on space needle's reissue of collected recordings that's about to be released that slows down "black cow" and buries it deep in the mix. it's there if you listen to it and god damn, i can't remember which SN track it is.

kevinod (odtron5000), Friday, 2 June 2006 03:19 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, it's not hip hop, but still, clever as hell.

this classic album's series DVD is going to be re-released in a month or so. it's mindblowing. if any group deserves an in-the-studio explication of how an album was produced, it's the dan. plus, you know fagen and becker are getting kicks out of it: watching them underhandedly dis one studio hack's take on the "peg" intro is hilarious. I think Becker says something (after the sample is played) to the effect of "Yeah, pretty much speaks for itself." great dvd.

kevinod (odtron5000), Friday, 2 June 2006 03:23 (seventeen years ago) link

That's on the clip I just posted, when they're listening to the alternate solos. The unused solos were SUCH shit.

Marmotdeth (marmotwolof), Friday, 2 June 2006 03:35 (seventeen years ago) link

oh...sorry. didn't see it. it's so awesome i had to mention it twice.

That DVD thing is awesome. Pure comedy gold.

Norwegian rappers Gatas Parlament released a single a few years back based on "Josie". However, they forgot to clear the sample at first and had to remix the track and re-release it without "Josie".

Actually, as I recall, the Dan sued the rappers for not giving them credit on the song & then Tariq & Gunz went on TRL calling out Fagan & Becker, telling them to come to the studio to prove that they respected hip hop.

Being read in the wrong direction: "Daydreamin" is part of the list using the "Black Cow" sample; "Home at Last" goes with the song beneath it in that list, Big Shug’s "Stripped and Pistol Whipped."

And I think I read in a Steely Dan bio some years ago, in a quote from either Fagen or Becker, that Lord Tariq and Peter Gunz ended up not making any money off "Uptown Baby" because of the sample.

also im producing a track for d-block that loops 'they wont act as kindly if they see you on the street' from barrytown

and what (ooo), Friday, 2 June 2006 12:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Haha dude, I read ILM so sporadically now that I only ever notice obvious Dan-bait threads (Cure, Prince, DM, Busta, etc etc etc) and FITEs.

Having said that, I've been completely sleeping on checking out Tatyana's album, especially considering that she's basically tailor-made for me to like (attractive black female pop r&b singer with a Harvard degree? MORE PLZ). Reading this thread just reminded me that I need to wake the fuck up.

Tariq and Peter Gunz got they asses sued and ended up bankrupting their label over that uncleared sample.

That album sucked but Lord Tariq was dope in The Bounce Squad and Money Boss Players.

Kanye West wrote a letter to get permission for your song. Can you go into that?

Fagen: “What happened is from time to time we get requests for license for hip-hoppers to use part of an old song. We got a clip of something from Kanye West wanted to use a piece of ‘Kid Charlemagne.’ We usually say yes, but we didn’t like the general curve of the way that one sounded. ... But then he sent us a handwritten letter that was so heartfelt we finally gave in and acceded to his request.

Becker: “He basically said this was a song (‘Champion’) that meant a lot to him. It was written about his father.”

Fagen: “I didn’t get that at all from the music.”

Becker: “I’ve had occasion to wonder since then whether that’s the same Kanye West.”

Fagen: “Maybe it was a prank.”

Really interesting thread. The "Kid Charlemagne" bit always made "Champion" for me.

Also: hip-hoppers

Limited to what's on Spotify, obviously, so no De La Soul. Also I pretty much only used songs where the sample was used prominently. Tone Loc's "Cutting Rhythms" samples "Black Cow" at one point, but it's not the primary sample in the song.

Ha, GYA, didn't know you were in LL! Of course you are. (And ... whoa, you are doing very well for yourself there.)

Wonder if there are any other ILXors in LL -- besides you and me, I know of two: 1) n/a and 2) James Redd and the Blecchs. Also former ILXor the Good Dr. Bill.
