i was watching mtv2 and daft punk had the video for 'one more time' and it was anime. then an unknown band called gorillaz had an anime video. so why do they suck (freakytrigger) and is coldplay any better (pitchforkmedia)?

In the pub the question was - are Daft Punk the worst best band or the best worst band - 'Discovery'is flawed but Gorillaz is worse, being bland, mid '90's dirge -hop. Dan the Automator has always been over-rated.As pop vids go,would you rather watch Hewlett's tired cliches, some bloke on a beach or Mylene. Coldplay remind me of wallpapering.

Gorrilaz are poo because they're blatantly that fool Albarn thinking "Mmm...that hip-hop malarkey is a bit popular at the moment, time to cash in!". And as naturally no-one would take his reincarnation as MC Mockney seriously, there has to be some silly novelty, and in typical Albarn style this novelty itself is incredibly dated, being a) a cartoon band and b) designed by someone who was hip God-knows how many years ago...7(Tank Girl film)? 13(When TG first appeared)? On top of that, why have they drawn the singer to look like a member of Menswear?

DG, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (12 years ago) Permalink

You're saying there's something WRONG with Menswear? How dare you! ;-)

Actually, that's quite a good question. I haven't heard anything by Gorillaz, all I know about them is that Damon Albarn is involved in it and ALL the criticisms of them so far on here revolve around Albarn's alleged intentions. Now, if I have nothing against him whatsoever and truly don't care what he's trying to achieve with this project, how would I feel about Gorillaz ? What makes them so repulsive, Albarn aside ?

Patrick, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (12 years ago) Permalink

I don't see how you can consider Gorrilaz without thinking of ol' Allbran. But if you were to, and you were sane, you would surely realise that the song is a terrible plodder anyway, and its just so...banal.

the great british public's great idea of a great april fool directed at tom: gorillaz goes BACK UP two places, 6 to 4 (and thus back into the Top Five Singles of All Time Right Now category)

how did we organise this coup, you ask...

mark s, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (12 years ago) Permalink

DG - If I were to dismiss music on account of the bad personality of the people who make it, I'd have to chuck at least 80 % of my records out the window.

Patrick, Sunday, 1 April 2001 00:00 (12 years ago) Permalink

I can't recall ever hating a record with the passion with which I loathe the Gorillaz single (apart from a few like Celine Dion and Bryan Adams which disgusted me for different reasons). It just encapsulates a certain kind of metropolitan smugness; obsessed with being as "fashionable" and instead ending up years behind the times, deeply patronising, indescribably self-satisfied. Damon Albarn despises you; despise him back.

Nauseating.

please be aware that the version that Radio One have hammered to death is VERY different to the 'proper' version. i cant stand the refix but the original is a wonderful genre mixup.dub/hip-hop/indie all rolled into one. makes a refreshing change. cheers !

Up two places!! Gaaah! Gorillaz really are the new Toploader!

The garage touches are the only thing I can stand about the song so I doubt I'll like the original mix much.

It's one of those records where it's hard to find the words as to why exactly it's bad - it's a kind of faith-based dislike. I'm sure a lot of it is Damon Albarn but I really like some records he's been involved in. The rhetoric around it is horrible. But there's something embarrassingly lame about it anyway: it has that kind of inert so-whatness you get with a lot of old trip-hop music, that deadly lack of playfulness that I tend to read as self-regard and over-reverence for influences.

But yeah, a lot of it is Damon Albarn.

I will give him credit, though - he's in the chart and people are obviously liking it, cause it's sticking around. He said he'd make a pop record and he made one.

Im going to give the boy from Blur the the benefit of the doubt, just listen to the music and stop worrying about whose singing the damn song or how much cred theyve got.

Mr Monk Goat, Saturday, 19 May 2001 00:00 (12 years ago) Permalink

The song was crap anyway...can't wait for the next one. Something tells me it'll me just as 'good'.

Unbelievable bitterness up-thread. Hard to remember a time when Albarn could have been taken so seriously by so many. Love him in the Rillaz. Is perfection.

Does Albarn even sleep? That horribly named Rocketjuice to the Moon thing, The Good the Bad and the Queen gigs soon, Blur meeting up again and now I'm reading about some opera that he did?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 7 November 2011 15:50 (1 year ago) Permalink

never heard of rocketjuice ..

mark e, Monday, 7 November 2011 15:54 (1 year ago) Permalink

It's his 'new' thing. As Flea is involved I assume the stupid name came from him.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 7 November 2011 15:56 (1 year ago) Permalink

oooh that .. as soon as i saw fleas involvement i switched off ..

There was some funny thing when Mike Watt was going to play with the Stooges Iggy told him "Don't Flea out on me, no triads, just play the regular bassline"

sounds like a demo, more a scrapbook of potentially interesting ideas than anything worth listening to on its own. albarn is horrible, andre goes back and forth from horrible (singing, "i'm the shit!") to kind of okay for half a minute (rapping), same ratio of badbadbadbad to good in the track.

Little GTFO (contenderizer), Friday, 24 February 2012 16:40 (1 year ago) Permalink

i love the full on chaos around the 7 minute mark.
it's very much in line with james lcd love for drawn out build ups.
the albarn opening i can pretty much ignore as i know things are going to get a lot more fun in a few minutes.
