_____________
A statement from the band's manager explained: "Clor, a band for whom musical differences surely seemed to be the whole point, have nonetheless succumbed to this hoariest of rock 'n' roll fates and decided not to be a pop group anymore..."

____________

all seems pretty dignified compared with the usual.

Clor missed their one chance to hop onto DFA, essentially. They would have fit on there like hand in glove... but DFA went with Hot Chop instead. What a wonderful world.

DOQQUN (donut), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyway, I hope the ex members of Clor become kickass dance remixers, because those Clor remixes I've heard were quite impressive.

DOQQUN (donut), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:07 (seventeen years ago) link

But it was not true pop, Doqqun, as Lex noted. How dare you be rockist. Er.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:09 (seventeen years ago) link

But to be objective here, Clor weren't really a pop band to me as much as a more indie-rocked out Severed Heads.. which is a really good thing for me, but not for mainstream, I guess.

DOQQUN (donut), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Is there a point to this thread?

rentboy (rentboy), Thursday, 11 May 2006 21:12 (seventeen years ago) link

there never was a US release. No US label would release it. And now (unless something weird happens), no US label ever will.

DOQQUN (donut), Thursday, 11 May 2006 22:42 (seventeen years ago) link

If you read the NME report it says that there is soon to be a U.S. release. This is the quote from Pitchfork "There is, however, good news on the horizon for the band’s fans in the States, as their manager also says that the debut is "about to be released in America," though we were unable to find any other sources that could confirm this information."

Just to say that I still listen to this album a lot. One of the best A sides I've heard this decade (er, 00s). What could've been! etc. Such a great statement of intent, which became, well, all of it.

the millions who bought it might disagree with the 'never heard' tag

BIG HOOTY aka the Sapperticker (electricsound), Thursday, 30 December 2010 09:59 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i mean the drill so far is to go 'lol as if no one's heard (album from the list)!' but i guess one has to bear in mind that the NME target audience is a good generation older than the average person on say ILX for example these days. i'm just very glad NME is introducing the cocteaus, leadbelly, felt and maccarthy etc to a bunch of 18 year olds. or at least trying. i mean.. who else is going to do that? it's especially heartening as NME at this time of year back in the day used to be a poll of bands' faves *from that year*. at least this is an interestinga and valuable alternative.

no, it's supposed to be a record that a reader of the NME circa 2010 would very likely not have heard

this is a reasonably interesting list imo

like...66.serge gainsbourg < you're under arrest >1987
is a pretty unusual serge album to choose

just sayin, Thursday, 30 December 2010 18:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it's great really. This is exactly what I looked to the NME for when I was 13 - 18. And despite the fact it's loads easier to find out and hear new music now, there really are a lot of albums on here that you're not going to stumble across, especially if you don't venture out from indieville that often. Kudos to them.

I really like Guy Garvey a lot but his suggestion of BRMC's third album just appalls me however. Are they really the ones deserving of the props from his record collection? I can't see it somehow.

"like...66.serge gainsbourg < you're under arrest >1987

Glad I'm not the only person to think this. Bit of a Serge stan but never clicked with this one at all.

unpredictable johnny rodz, Thursday, 30 December 2010 20:40 (thirteen years ago) link

That said, a surprisingly good list from the NME but I'm a little lost as to who exactly it's aimed at (aside from 18yr olds, maybe). For every leftfield choice there are just as much "well-known-in-its-genre" canonical entries, e.g Da Capo, Odessey, The Infamous, etc.

unpredictable johnny rodz, Thursday, 30 December 2010 20:44 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, there's some good stuff on here. not a massive fan of clor, but they probably were a bit ahead of the curve, to be fair.

although their use of toy keyboards and the singers weedy voice would unfortunately put me in mind of john shuttleworth.

just sayin, Thursday, 30 December 2010 21:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Remember kind of liking the Clor album at the time but for some reason it gets blurred in my mind with the first Hot Chip release. I suppose it's the aforementioned toy keyboards and weedy voices, I guess.

unpredictable johnny rodz, Thursday, 30 December 2010 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link

I prefer the Clor album to any of the Hot Chip ones... not that really means that much. The Clor album (and any by Hot Chip) is a great EP.

Cosby You! Black Emperor (Doran), Thursday, 30 December 2010 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Think I still have a promo cd of the Clor album.

Oddessey & Oracle, Da Capo, Zuckerzeit, several others I can't recall are all great suggestions for18 year olds. BRMC is not. Wish there was more jazz, kraut, and some Os Mutantes / tropicalia.

turns out that luke smith from clor produced ternion by 'we have band' (last years album).

i picked this up today as a random £3 fopp special.

mainly due to the extra 26 minute remix album that supposed takes the league unlimited orchestra as its influence, and checking the credits revealed this nugget.
