Albums you thought wonderful on firstplay, then dramatically cooled off about. (I have plenty of examples of the other way round)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 27 March 2006 08:24 (twenty years ago)

i don't think it's shite, but after three listens to the bloc party album i felt no inclination to hear it again

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Monday, 27 March 2006 08:28 (twenty years ago)

Pretty much everything I rave-reviewed in Uncut...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 27 March 2006 09:56 (twenty years ago)

Stankonia. I still love several songs on it, but as a whole it doesn't hold together. Funnily enough, I had almost the opposite reaction with Aquemini.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 27 March 2006 10:03 (twenty years ago)

Summer Sun by Yo La Tengo. After those first couple of listenings when it sounded brilliant, I haven't probably played it once.

mikko (mikko), Monday, 27 March 2006 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Have to say, maybe contoversially round here, Nathan Fake.

Beck: Guero

zeus (zeus), Monday, 27 March 2006 11:05 (twenty years ago)

Beck: Guero

Seconded. They should've got BOC to do the production on the whole album judging by Broken Drum.

Treblekicker (treblekicker), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Clap Your Hands Say Meh

I think I maybe even liked it for two or three listens, but that voice... that voice began to rot my soul.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Destroyer - "Destroyer's Rubies"

Col Tom Blue (Col Tom Blue), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

every album ive ever heard, probably

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

This seems to be the kind of thing that happens to me when I buy something based on an in-store listening station listen. Usually it's stuff with great production and not much else.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 27 March 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Ulrich Schnauss - a strangel iolated place.

Well it's not that bad, but mean going through a serious morr phase and all, in hindsight I think I overestmated a lot of stuff I listened to then.

tokyo ghost storiess, Monday, 27 March 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

the newest Broken Social Scene. At first, I loved it for sheer overproduction. But after a week, when I couldn't recall one actual tune...

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

We've done this thread before (and I don't mean the one-song-turnaround thread linked above) 'cause I know I spilled my intense humiliation at even wasting half a heartbeat thinking Dreden Dolls were worth anything.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I think this happened to me with Clor.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Clor seconded.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

"Broken Social Scene" seconded, although it never sounded that amazing to begin with.

Col Tom Blue (Col Tom Blue), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Colin here it is - Anyone heard the Dresden Dolls CD yet?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

y'all know it's true!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

A first for me: every thing I liked about this cd COMPLETELY DISAPPEARED on second listen, to be replaced by the feeling of being duped by a couple of pretentious locals who listened to the "The Wall" a lot as teenagers but are too cool for that now. All the good melodies are stolen (from Sebadoh, from Pink Floyd, from the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang soundtrack), the lyrics are muddled and middle-brow (she doesn't want a coin-operated boy, she wants a spring- or battery-operated one), the musicianship is more gimmicky than passionate or virtuosic, any hints of eroticism are immediately eclipsed by silly goth "black like my soul" nonsense -- feh. I am pleased that I didn't buy the cd.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

everything by the pixies. bought all their records when i was 18, started out loving them, liked them less and less with each listen. not in an irritating way, just in the way that you get tired of hearing that one commercial all the time on the radio. you get it, there's nothing under the surface (and not much on the surface to begin w/) and no need to waste time looking for something that isn't there.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

That new Prince album.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

The Go! Team.

vartman (novaheat), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:24 (twenty years ago)

this band called "The music" in their 1st record.
first thoughts:wow, nice hi-fi zepelyn style!
afterwards - i can't stand this shitty, repetetive sparkling, dancy shallow production and that awful singer.
fuck

sam sonite, Monday, 27 March 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

otm with The Music

pinder (pinder), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Atari Teenage Riot's "Burn, Berlin, Burn!"
The promo showed up in my mailbox. Soon after, I showed up at a friend's house with the CD and vodka. After drinking and ingesting various substances, we listened to the CD in its entirety, convinced that Atari Teenage Riot was the future of music. I honestly believed that "Burn, Berlin, Burn!' was a work of undiluted genius.
When I sobered up and put the CD on for a second listen, I realized it was complete and utter shit.

Binjominia (Brilhante), Monday, 27 March 2006 20:21 (twenty years ago)

on first listen i thought AFI were actually good misfits-esque punk rock. i'm a sucker for singalong "whoa-oh-oh" vocals. but yeah, i was very wrong about that. i still think that part of the reason my person i was seeing at the time left me was my excessive love of "the art of drowning" for about a month. i lost interest in it, and then threw it back on a year or so later and could not believe i loved that album so much.

oh yeah, and basically everything ani difranco has ever done.

i don't know what pink floyd, or sebadoh, or chitty chitty bang bang soundtrack sounds like "girl anachronism". or "the perfect fit" for that matter. bowie, or pj harvey perhaps, but i don't see those comparisons at all.

I believe I bought a Cranberries record once for some reason.

the delays first record
the dears album

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:35 (twenty years ago)

it's usually more like...

Me: This is shite!
Everybody else: This is great! Give it a chance...
Me: Ok, this isn't as bad as I expected, it has "redeeming qualities" (later) hey, this is sort-of amazing! (nagging doubts persist)
Everybody else: See?!

Me (much later): I was right the first time :|

file under cozy techno (fandango), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:41 (twenty years ago)

the dears album otm. I think I once wrote a bad-grade-receiving Junior High School essay about this. Ah yes, here it is

The Day The World Turned Dayglo Redd (Ken L), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Wilco's A Ghost Is Born,"hands down. Argh. I remember the night I bought it too, I somehow got it into my wormy little brain that this was somehow inexorably interconnected with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, that there was a subliminal narrative at work, yaddayaddayadda. And, to be fair, "At Least That's What You Said" was a terrific opener, especially when one bore the expectations for this record that I had. Then, two words: "Spiders (Kidsmoke)". Now, I don't know what "Kidsmoke" is, but I know that I don't like hearing the sound of a Snapple lid being popped over and over and over again while Jeff Tweedy mumbles about spiders working and going on vacation and shit. There are some redeemig moments, but otherwise, this album is a giant effing drag. However, I do recommend the new Loose Fur, at least until tomorrow when I post about it on this thread about one hundred posts due south.

not much that amazes me does so without heavy initial suspicion these days sadly...

haha so OTM on atari teenage riot!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:49 (twenty years ago)

xxp - dude, that's the only good song on the album!

pyjamagrama (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 00:17 (twenty years ago)

xpost: The Go! Team. Never felt that was amazing. It's always sounded like sub-Avalanches to me. Also never understood the tremendous hype they get.

Col Tom Blue (Col Tom Blue), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 00:23 (twenty years ago)

To my shame I quite enjoyed Test Icicles on first listen.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 00:28 (twenty years ago)

I really, really hate to say it, but... Sleater-Kinney.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:04 (twenty years ago)

the new strokes.

the first 2 listens were nice enough, but after that it sounded like piss on shit.

R.E.M. - Up

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:03 (twenty years ago)

the new strokes.

Really? I had the exact opposite reaction. "Juicebox," for instance, sounded like shit on the first listen, and then slowly grew on me. Now I even like both the "Passenger" ripoff and the "Mandy" ripoff.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:37 (twenty years ago)

Dandy Warhols.

Pixies seconded. I listened to them a lot about 3 years ago, not much for maybe a year or so. several months back a co-worker was playing the greatest hits or something and I couldn't stand it. Every song that i'd really enjoyed was really horrible and grating.

Kristin Hersh, kinda, i fear, at least the 'Sunny Border Blue' album. I've loved her for years and years and i just loaded a bunch of her albums into my iTunes. Every time a song from 'SBB' comes on i wince and skip it. 'Ruby' is absolutely dire. I still like 'Hips and Makers', which is good.

Bjork, sometimes. Not shite, but I certainly am not as enamoured with it all as I was at 17.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:55 (twenty years ago)

The new Devendra Banhart, on the first listen. Then I realized there were only a couple of good songs, mostly the bossa nova-inflected numbers.

Dare (Dare), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 04:27 (twenty years ago)

We Are Scientists. first thought: that is some catchy, catchy rockenroll. after 3rd listen, i realize that there's no reason for me to listen to that record again (except, perhaps, while drunkenly dancing to that first song)

davelus (davelus), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 06:46 (twenty years ago)

I like the Go Team album, still do. Didn't like the avalanches one, still don't.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 06:52 (twenty years ago)

Emily, I said the GOOD melodies were stolen.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 06:54 (twenty years ago)

Lil Flip "U Gotta Feel Me"

Especially that awful "sunshine" song.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 08:18 (twenty years ago)

Atari Teenage Riot is a good choice! I think I actually bought not one but two of their albums before I realized what crap they were. Luckily I managed to sell both of them off. I'm not sure why I ever fell for them in the first place, since I think the whole idea behind Digital Hardcore - as well as the genre of "noise" - seems to be to make electronic music for ex-metalheads. Which I'm not.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Also - Safety Scissors "Tainted Lunch"

1st response - this is jaunty and fun!

2nd response - no, it's fucking irritating

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 09:25 (twenty years ago)

That album which Al Green made with the Fine Young Cannibals. Whoops.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 10:05 (twenty years ago)

Richard X - X-Factor
Beta Band - Heroes to Zeroes
Super Furry Animals - Phantom Power

Lots of production flash with little in terms of worthwhile tunes.

Also, Eisbar otm about Sigur Ros.

jason. (jason.), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 10:33 (twenty years ago)

All you ATR haters are mentalists.

I usually do the opposite of this thread, i.e. think something is shite until I've heard it a couple of times. I probably have done this (thread title) with a band that has one really good song on a shit album, can't think of any tho.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 11:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Sigur Ros is an excellent example.

The Sound of Walls (Bimble...), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

sigur ros didn't exactly help things with the two follow-ups as well, that kinda crystallised things pretty firmly on the "mawkish elf-fellating shite" tip...

gek-opel, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:59 (twenty years ago)

seeing them live killed their records for me. live, I think they're pretty amazing, but the albums are just dull, dull, dull.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Sigur Ros are indeed incredibly frustrating on record, there _are_ tiny moments & turns in the songs where it actually does work like everyone else says... but oh boy are they ever brief!! I've tried enough times to get fully absorbed & intimate with Ageitis Byryn and it's just NOT HAPPENING :(

file under cozy techno (fandango), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm still not sure how I feel about Joanna Newsom frankly...

file under cozy techno (fandango), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Scissor Sisters. I think I only played that album twice all the way through.

darin (darin), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Rachel Stevens' "Some Girls" really excited me for the idea of electro being very popular in England. After a few listens, however, the vocals really began to bore me and I kind of realized that the only reason why I liked the song was because I wanted Phil Oakey to sing over it.

D.V. Caputo, Thursday, 30 March 2006 08:34 (twenty years ago)

I'll say it before, and I'll say it again: Hot Chip. Minus a couple select tracks, they're very ho-hum for me know.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Thursday, 30 March 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys, Scissor Sisters...

youth problem (YouthProblem), Thursday, 30 March 2006 15:30 (twenty years ago)

The United States of Electronica, The Go! Team and The Junior Boys. About 2 good moments apiece (except the Go!s, whose album is an EP with padding).

BARMS, Friday, 31 March 2006 08:55 (twenty years ago)

So wrong about Junior Boys. Last Exit is a neon classic.

And another vote for Sigur Ros.

electricderby, Friday, 31 March 2006 21:03 (twenty years ago)

The Books - Lost and Safe

The first few times I listened to it, I thought it was amazing, easily my album of the year (even though it was near the beginning of the year, I think).

I listened to it again a couple of days later and realized that I had just been extremely stoned.
