?

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

My gut feeling tells me Parade.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

parade pretty fucking easily. plz.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

so parade. i mean, come ON.

grady (grady), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Lovesexy is really fucking annoying in that my CD is one continuous track.

Ron E. Mexico, Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

nay, lovesexy does it.

whatever (boglogger), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I Wish U Heaven just might be my fave Prince track. Maybe.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

parade, easily. lovesexy was where it started to go downhill, besides some great songs.

ppp, Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Graffiti Bridge >>>>>>>>>>>> Parade > Lovesexy

Dave Depper (Dave Depper), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:37 (twenty years ago)

That's a bold claim, Dave.

Writing off Lovesexy is not something I can do. Not with "Anna Stesia" on it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

If you get rid of the Tevin Campbell/subpar Time/Rosie Gaines songs on GB you are left with one of the strongest sets Prince ever released. Joy In Repetition, We Can Funk, Theives in the Temple, Elephants & Flowers, Tick Tick Bang... the list goes on... and New Power Generation is worthwhile simply for the bragging about the "new noise of the 90's."

I love Lovesexy as much as the next guy though...

Dave Depper (Dave Depper), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Parade is my 3rd favorite, after Sign O The Times and 1999. Wasn't Parade going to be a double at first?

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Parade, hands down. Lovesexy was when everything started to go wrong. The shark was jumped.

Joseph B. Cowart (flamingrev), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Parade is still my favorite Prince album, largely because of "Sometimes It Snows In April" (one of the only pieces of music that ever made me cry).

Calling Lovesexy a shark-jump completely misses the notion that "Alphabet St" is probably the best single Prince ever put out.

Dan (Don't Mess) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Y'all are on crack.
Lovesexy, easily. It's incredible, you just need to get a tracked version. I always thought Parade was really kind of flaccid.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I want to say Lovesexy since I only ever listen to a few tracks on Parade.

Did he ever release a tracked version?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:36 (twenty years ago)

LOVE OR MONEY is still better than most/much of PARADE.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Calling Lovesexy a shark-jump completely misses the RETARDED notion that "Alphabet St" is probably the best single Prince ever put out.

Pssst, you are sucking down crack like it was Reddi-Whip.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

What is a "tracked" version?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Individual CD tracks -- as originally released, the CD is one long track with no breaks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:47 (twenty years ago)

For a second I thought there was some new emerging CD format I had never heard of.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Graffiti Bridge is quite good, if memory serves, certainly superior to Diamonds and Pearls.

I don't remember much about Parade, which i never bought, but its a drag that the fab "Mountains" ain't on the Hits albums…

Lovesexy is grate…

veronica moser (veronica moser), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

"Alphabet St." is a great song but a missed opportunity. I can't put my finger on why... something to do with the bass maybe? Anyway, thus, pssst - badass revolutionary art! OTM.

Dave Depper (Dave Depper), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Diamonds And Pearls is a massively overrated album.

Dan (Hating On "Alphabet St" Is Akin To Hating On Life Itself) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:07 (twenty years ago)

I love "Alphabet St." but I wouldn't put it in the top ten Prince singles at all.

Who massively overrates Diamonds & Pearls? Besides the millions who bought it?

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

There was a tracked version of Lovesexy released to radio DJs; they used to sell for hundreds on ebay.
Nowadays, all it takes is a copy of the original, an mp3 editor and about fifteen minutes and presto.

I'd say: Lovesexy = Grafitti Bridge but either one is > Diamonds and Pearls > Parade

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:21 (twenty years ago)

yeah - matos otm. alphabet street is great, but this is the competition.

I love "Alphabet St." but I wouldn't put it in the top ten Prince singles at all.

?!?! Sorry, I'm with Dan on this one (and on Diamonds and Pearls).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

EVERYONE is with Dan on D&P! It's not even a position.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:33 (twenty years ago)

yeah butt gett off is hott

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

So is "Thunder"

Dave Depper (Dave Depper), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:37 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if there's a thread for worst Prince album, but I'm gonna have to throw down "Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic."

Dave Depper (Dave Depper), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

I don't have it, but that Sheryl Crow cover is actually, uh, really good.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:48 (twenty years ago)

it seems that Diamonds and Pearls and particularly the symbol rekkid were kinda Prince's defensive responses to MC Hammer and various big budget hip-hop artists.

veronica moser (veronica moser), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

they were, though I'm Going to Change My Name to the Title of This Album is waaaay better than D&P

Come and The Gold Experience are both an order of magnitude better than everything else listed in Blount's post.

fuck one you dan! fuck one you!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

The Gold Experience is better than anything he's done since Sign, sorry, kids.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:05 (twenty years ago)

gold experience is great

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

does kirstie alley have the most (quantity) killer slow jams?

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:08 (twenty years ago)

Kirstie Alley is a fucking great album (except for Kirstie Alley obv.).

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

what slow jams does O(+> have? mostly all i think about from that album is THREE CHAINS O' GOLD.

morning papers? blue light? sexy mf? i dunno. i was always gay for 7, though...

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Chaos and Disorder is CRAZY weak.

Symbol, Come and Gold are all terribly underrated.
And D+P also has Money Don't Matter 2Night, which makes up for a host of sins.

And I've always loved bluelight.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Parade is 10,000,000,000,000 times better than Lovesexy. I can see someone not liking the former, but extolling Lovesexy over Parade is sheer lunacy.

(that said, I'd love to read a great reevaluation of Lovesexy).

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

Post-Sign it goes like this, in descending order: The Gold Experience, Symbol, Emancipation, Graffiti Bridge, everything else.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:19 (twenty years ago)

Blue Light is great, so is Love 2 the 9's.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

yeah love 2 the 9's is the one i really really want to hear right now, that's the prince i don't think we're getting back anytime soon, that flighty paisley beatles and lace prince that shows up from 'take me with u' thru 'pink cashmere'. slowjam prince will always be with us (i'm surprised he doesn't play this up more now really - it's always been his biggest strength with r&b radio), and rock prince and wtf funk prince show up from time to time but starfish and pink raspberry prince ain't been seen in too long.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:24 (twenty years ago)

"Blue Light," "The Morning Papers," "Love 2 The 9's," and "And God Created Woman" are fuckin' great.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Alfred is OTM like crazy here.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

the funky verse of harmonies on "and god created woman" always kills me.

and not like it needs to be said but:

i'll be a hundred and seventeen / you'll be still saying 'baby not tonight'

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:48 (twenty years ago)

This thread just inspired me to listen to "3 Chains O Gold."

Jesus Christ, that song is something else.

Dave Depper (Dave Depper), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:49 (twenty years ago)

"Parade", rather obviously. While I have always found "Girls And Boys", and even to some extent "Kiss", overrated, "Parade" as a whole album is an impressive variation of styles. "Do U Like" is great, "Anotherloverholenyohead" is great, and "Sometimes It Rains In April" may be the best thing he has ever done.

"Lovesexy" is... Well, it contains a couple of nice songs, including the underrated "Glam Slam", but it is hardly close to the classicness of "Parade".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Around the World in a Day ain't a great album (sorry, Dan), but Lovesexy is the quasi-psychedelic mess that ATWIAD isn't.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:51 (twenty years ago)

yeah - "love 2 the 9's" is good... i think it was the last thread about this album that made me reconsider my historical dislike for "blue light." that song's aight.

BUT DUDE THREE CHAINS O' GOLD!

COUPLEDWITHTHEFACTTHATYOUBELONG2ANOTHERWHOSENAMEISSELF-RIGHTEOUSNESSSSSSSSSSS

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Is Three Chains O' Gold the crazy pomp-Broadway tune with all the choirs and shred and "I wanted a cuppa coffee/but I didn't have any cream"?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Yes. It always sounded like a "Bohemian Rhapsody" homage/parody.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

Individual CD tracks -- as originally released, the CD is one long track with no breaks.
-- Ned Raggett (ne...), March 21st, 2006 2:47 PM. (Ned) (link)

I don't know why I've never thought of doing this before, but it'd be super simple to write up a .cue file for the cd and burn a copy with track breaks. Maybe I'll tackle that this weekend.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:40 (twenty years ago)

I really do wish "3 Chains o' Gold" were something else. Something else entirely.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:41 (twenty years ago)

At the time it was so unusual (for Prince) that I accepted it; now it's one of those annoying curios.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:48 (twenty years ago)

it seemed to me like one of those (awful) 'prince: on broadway!' tunes from around that time (usually title trax - 'graffiti bridge', 'diamonds and pearls') with elephantitis

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:52 (twenty years ago)

My gf refuses to listen to it, and she likes Broadway.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 22:54 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

Can someone tell me why Parade is rated so high among Prince's albums? Because to me it has only 4 great tunes ("Girls and Boys", "Kiss", "Mountains", and "Sometimes it Snows in April"), and while the rest of the album is not bad at all, it mostly consists of not-so-memorable interludes, meandering filler tunes, and orchestral flourishes. I think Lovesexy definitely has stronger tunes, more interesting rhythmic ideas, plus the maximalist layered sound feels more original too. To me Parade sounds like a less interesting test run for Sign O' the Times with some more strings.

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 February 2008 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

You think "New Position" is filler and/or not memorable??

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 21 February 2008 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

Or that "Life Can Be So Nice" isn't maximalist and layered???

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 21 February 2008 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder, u.

Mark G, Thursday, 21 February 2008 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

I like "Anotherloveretc." too.

Jordan, Thursday, 21 February 2008 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

Well duh!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 21 February 2008 14:58 (eighteen years ago)

"New Position" has a cool sounding beat, but that's about it. Most of the shorter filler tunes have some nice ideas, but they just don't work as fully conceived songs.

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 February 2008 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know why Parade holds together like it does. It's such a hodgepodge of unrelated songs, experiments and (depends on your point of view) throwaways which shouldn't work as an album, but it may be my favorite Prince.

Something about the wild sonic diversity maybe. 4 or 5 utterly genius songs doesn't hurt either.

Lovesexy, without a doubt. Parade has some amazing individual moments on it, but Lovesexy is just a wonderful start to finish experience, with incredible, lush production. I can see why Prince demanded it be listened to in full. It's also in my Top 3 favourite Prince albums, and is better than the album it replaced.
