"Admirers of these self-made twerps certainly don't refer to them as pop because they get on the AM -- for once the programmers are doing their job. So is it because they sing in a high register? Or because a good beat makes them even more uncomfortable than other accoutrements of a well-lived life? "Never turn your back on mother earth," they chant or gibber in a style unnatural enough to end your current relationship or kill your cacti, and I must be a natural man after all, because I can't endure the contradiction." "My Baby's Taking Me Home"
"Ugly Guys With Beautiful Girls"

Heh, interesting, Ned. Those are probably my favorite AND least favorite songs on that album. I can't stand Ugly Guys (omg out of context lollery)

I've only heard half of the new album, but I was rather shocked that it was essentially the exact same as Lil Beethoven. "Dick Around" is better than anything on Beety though.

(I'd try to do a list, but I fear it'd consist of nothing but songs from the first four or five albums, which, despite being my preference, simply seems wrong with a band like Sparks)

just been added to the big chill festival line-up..

anbody seen the movie "Rollercoaster", from the 70's?...had Sparks in it, playing themselves, dedicating the newest, fastest, largest rollercoaster ever, at Magic Mountain...(which a mad bomber had designs on...can George Segal possibly save the day?)

They've feared talk of the movie ever since.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 14:47 (7 months ago) Permalink

listening to "Dick Around" right now and I'm reminded that it's basically one of the greatest things ever

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 14:47 (7 months ago) Permalink

maybe my favorite nu-Sparks moment is in "Lighten Up Morrissey" when they do that extended chorus

but yeah when I saw that thread "do they make epics anymore?" I immediately thought of "Dick Around" but didn't post it because Sparks aren't exactly in the public consciousness

"Dick Around" live is the most amazing thing. Started off one show that way and it was just all top flight from there.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 14:51 (7 months ago) Permalink

it counteracts how much I hate them for "they call it that WILLYYYYYYS!!! *bwooooooomp*"

Man, I just love "Whippings and Apologies" to death:

Some of the guitars are very Sonic Youth-ish on there (am imagining that Thurston, an avowed Sparks fan, would agree).

I also have an unabashed love for "Tips For Teens", which is just such a joyous blast of absurdity:

Indiscreet is basically the best album ever made. Love these guys so much.

Still holding my breath for East Coast US tour dates!
