Nuggets USA vs Nuggets the Rest of the world?

"We win"

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 09:47 (twenty years ago)

Are you the USA or the rest of the world though??

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 09:51 (twenty years ago)

definitely II. i love I, but i'm far more of a sucker for the UK/Euro/Aussie stuff.

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 09:54 (twenty years ago)

xpost ah..... that would be telling!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:46 (twenty years ago)

The box 2 has a sticker "Guaranteed no hits" which was a complete lie as most of the UK ones were hits here. (oh what a giveaway).

I believe Os Mutantes had hits in Brazil, but prob not "Bat Macumba" as it wasn't a single I believe.

So, in summary, I would say box 2, but I cannot as I only have box 1.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:48 (twenty years ago)

most of the UK ones were hits here

...is complete garbage

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Aaaaaah, but since Mr. G. has painstakingly refused to be drawn on the tricky subject of where he considers "here" to be, how can you be so sure?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Well, "Friday on my Mind" was a hit in England right?? I still don't know who "we" are, but the saying "We Win" does sound awfull American, plus Mr. G only owns 1, I think he'd declare the set he OWNS to be the winner. Am I reading too much into this? Has the answer been obvious all along??

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:10 (twenty years ago)

it's probably two, because britain > america.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:14 (twenty years ago)

Both boxes are superior to CHILDREN OF NUGGETS.

However, if I really had to choose, NUGGETS I wins by a narrow margin. Why? Because there's only ONE song on that entire box that I don't care for, and that's "Why Do I Cry" by the Remains. Great band, just never liked the song.

By comparison, NUGGETS II has eight tune-outs that I usually skip over. Even so...both are better than CHILDREN OF NUGGETS, which has 53 songs that I'm never gonna play again (that's how lame it is).

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Woah, and I was thinking of checking out Children of Nuggets too!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:22 (twenty years ago)

"I still don't know who "we" are, but the saying "We Win" does sound awfull American, plus Mr. G only owns 1, I think he'd declare the set he OWNS to be the winner. Am I reading too much into this? Has the answer been obvious all along??"

Aaaah but you are overlooking the fact that Mr. Grout is quite clearly as American as afternoon tea on the croquet lawn with cucumber sandwiches.

Or should that be as British as Ma's apple pie and Little League Baseball?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:26 (twenty years ago)

Either way, he's the pioneer of a new nation. Tired of the King's oppression -yearning for FREEDOM!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:30 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha ha, atishoo.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:40 (twenty years ago)

"atishoo."

I think you may have just given the game away, old bean.

Dashed poor show, what?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:44 (twenty years ago)

So, in conclusion, Nuggets 2 > Nuggets.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:45 (twenty years ago)

UK Hits:
3. I Can Hear The Grass Grow - The Move Listen Listen Listen
4. My Friend Jack - The Smoke Listen Listen Listen
5. My White Bicycle - Tomorrow Listen Listen Listen
21. My Mind's Eye - The Small Faces Listen Listen Listen
22. Friday On My Mind - The Easybeats Listen Listen Listen
25. Fire Brigade - The Move Listen Listen Listen
27. Biff! Bang! Pow! - The Creation
21. Pictures Of Matchstick Men - The Status Quo
1. Rosalyn - The Pretty Things
4. How Does It Feel To Feel - The Creation
26. Here Come The Nice - The Small Faces

Nicked from Amazon listing, so it's not me saying "Listen listen listen", although you should, prob. Also, that's the relative track position, not the UK Chart position.

Some of these were very big hits.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Thank you, Mark Grout, for getting this thread back on track!

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 11:58 (twenty years ago)

I would have to say number one because I bought it first. The second one is almost as good but really they are both must owns, IMO. I have played both so much, but unlike most other music today, I'm not even close to burning out on it and will continue to play both especially high. ;-)

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 12:06 (twenty years ago)

It was mark grout who put this thread OFF track, what with his aura of mystery and all! : )

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 12:13 (twenty years ago)

and with a swish of my mighty cloak (OK, my long coat), the thread track re-appears! to applause.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 12:17 (twenty years ago)

sorry to nitpick but 11 songs out of 120 isn't most by any stretch of the imagination

xpost sorry to derail again

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 12:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to say "Arctic Monkeys" in a minute!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Nuggets was like, psychedelic and all, man, like you know, so why can't, you know why can't the thread just, like you know, .....be .....free?
Man.

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 12:24 (twenty years ago)

This thread is free, but we are all in chains!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 12:30 (twenty years ago)

i prefer rubble to both

jim p. irrelevant (electricsound), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Nuggets II has a number of tracks that aren't really psych and don't seem to fit on it particularly well.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Nuggets III has leaked

Orson (eman), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

heh.

("Children of Nuggets" is box set three. It's um not indispensible. It's dispensible. That's what it is.)

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Has the Pebbles series ever been boxed? (I "like" vol 1 more, but I listen to vol 2 more, so I think vol 2 wins, if only because I hadn't been listening to those songs since I was 14 and found the More Electric '60s series of cassettes at a truckstop).

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

the no thanks! punk one functions quite nicely as a nuggets iii (and is superior to children of nuggets)

blicero, Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

xpost - nah, though there's those essential pebbles comps. count my vote in the american nuggets pile.

ZR (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

does anyone know why the hell "96 Tears" isn't on I? Licensing issues or something?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

The first ten Pebbles albums (barring the surf one - umm, v4, I think) have been boxed, albeit retitled 'Box of Trash'.

rarrr, Tuesday, 24 January 2006 18:03 (twenty years ago)

Dr. Bill— I have a friend who just came back from Mexico with an assload of ? vinyl, which is apparently really cheap down there. They sell up here for upwards of $20 to the hipsters, and cost about a buck apeice down there. 'Course, ? is playing weddings up here now...

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

"does anyone know why the hell "96 Tears" isn't on I? Licensing issues or something?"

allen klein issues. it is on the recent cameo/parkway box though.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

When I first heard "No Thanks", I was thinking, "this could be Nuggets III"!

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:18 (twenty years ago)

the Loud, Fast & Out of Control '50s box could be Nuggets 1/2. I actually like that one as much (maybe more) than any of 'em. the first Nuggets wins, btw.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:25 (twenty years ago)

I totally don't get the hate for Children of Nuggets. I'd say the skip to listen ratio is about the same for me as it is on the other two sets. Maybe, I just missed the boat on a lot of these bands during the 80's, so it's more enjoyable for me. I dunno.

darin (darin), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Re: CHILLUN OF NUGGETS, I like a lot of the neo-garage acts from the eighties and nineties. It's just that too many of the bands Rhino chose were just glorified, power-pop bands - the set needed more of the rowdier acts for balance (where the hell were the Gories?). Even several of the male bands sounded like the Bangles!

And that "Jack & Diane"/Phil Collins drum sound sucks, too. I know it was the 80's, but they could have gotten a less sterile snare sound for those tracks.

Rev. Hoodoo (Rev. Hoodoo), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 02:42 (twenty years ago)

I prefer "Children Of Nuggets" due to the largely stereo content.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that's crucial.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm picturing the cover of Geir Hongro's Xmas Gift To You! with the Santa-bearded-and-suited Norseman sporting a "Forward To Stereo!" button.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:29 (twenty years ago)

I am currently enjoying the Sisters Of Nuggets collection, aka Teh Hatbox.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:30 (twenty years ago)

I > II for me. both very fine though! I just think I prefer the (generally) scuzzier american approach.

controversial buffalo stance (haitch), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:51 (twenty years ago)

Nuggets-rest of the world or one kiss leads to another?
2 box sets...one gift token....

there can be only one.

Danny boy, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 11:34 (twenty years ago)

Pebbles III pwns all y'alls.

emil.y (emil.y), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Children of Nuggets *was* very uneven, and the glossier stuff bored me. On the other hand, hearing "I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape" by Times jsut about made up for it. I mean it. You know how every so often you find a killer pop single that makes you happy to be alive, and reaffirms why you ever loved music? I had that kind of experience listening to the Times track when I got the CoN box last year.

James, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:05 (twenty years ago)

James OTFM. I love that song!

The Spongetones also make the whole set worth it for me.

darin (darin), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:15 (twenty years ago)

seven years pass...

This is most inspired:
