Slsk Hall of Shame

One spot must be reserved to the losers who only TRADE. I don't know about most users, but personally I don't check to see what people downloading from me offer (unless we have a superfast connection rate or they're downloading a ridiculously wonderful combination of albums/songs) and I would certainly never ban someone because what they share isn't appealing to me. It's not like these people lose anything by sharing, and I bet when they d/l stuff from other users no one tells them "sorry, I'm not interested in what you're sharing".

Has this happened to anyone else?

musically (musically), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

i doubt it

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:23 (twenty years ago)

it has happened to me more the once, I think ppl who monitor your shares on slsk need to get a better hobby

J. Lamphere (WatchMeJumpStart), Monday, 23 January 2006 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Hasn't happened to me, but I ban people if they're not sharing anything in return. ;)

rondaview, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Metalheads are really bad about this. I've gotten nasty messages and banned when downloading metal stuff--usually because I have "mainstream crap" and "rap shit" shared.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 01:46 (twenty years ago)

I've been banned for having disorganized files, I have 0 complete albums and no folders. I thought about organizing them many a time before, but the system I have is what's best for me, so people are going to have to sit at their computers infuriated some more.

But because of your files. . . that's lame!

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

One thing I've never figured out is why every upload is so much faster than every download. People taking from me routinely get 70 kbs + but I'm usually stuck at like 10 when downloading.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

The people who drive me insane are the losers who ban you for not having files organized to their liking.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Mark, depends on your connection and their connection speed. You'll never get higher than 20 or so kpbs from me because that's the highest my internet connection can go (most home internet connections max out around that point) - conversely, download speeds are usually much higher (my max download is 1.5 Mbps). T1 lines and higher can support much higher upload speeds.

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Last week, a guy spent a few days downloading album after album from me. Two minutes after I queued one up from him, he banned me.

Mike Dixn (Mike Dixon), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

i've gotten banned a few times lately, and when I ask why I never get a response. I jsut ban them back (not that they care) and send them filthy messages, and then select "ignore this user". fun!

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

My general rule is that I share with anybody and everybody (even those who don't share anything), but they must keep it to 40 max at a time so everybody in my que can get a fair wait. If you accidentally que up hundreds of files, I will delete them for you without a word, but if you requeue them, then you're banned. I think this is fair.

Then I usually get a message saying "why did you ban me asshole", which is baffeling. After I explain it, they say they didn't realize they had qued up so much (despite their restarting them)...so my question always is, how did you realize you were banned?

I get banned all the time by people who have no posted rules, and I've never gotten more than an album's worth of tracks in one sitting. To me, these are the hall-of-shamers.

The typical attitude people hold about slsk is a "scratch my back and I'll scratch yours". Look, you don't have to scratch my back...leaving slsk running 24/7 is not work, so no need to return any favors. Just don't be greedy.

Then there are those who gripe about how you organize your files. Ugh.

PappaWheelie B.C., Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Last week, a guy spent a few days downloading album after album from me. Two minutes after I queued one up from him, he banned me

Oh man, we have a winner. The penalty for that should be death.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I don't really pay attention to who is downloading what from me, but I'm not a heavy user.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:31 (twenty years ago)

no one ever downloads from me, apart from this one guy, who queues an album up every couple of weeks.

many people message me, but they only ever say 'oi?', they never attempt to download

terry lennox. (gareth), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 20:36 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I've ever done anything about people DLing from me, except one who queued up a couple of albums and was getting a fast transfer rate, so I checked to see what he had (can't remember what the albums were - old soul I think), and he was sharing nothing. I mentioned that to him and he said he was new and still setting stuff up. It didn't seem worth caring about it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:08 (twenty years ago)

I never ban anybody, ever, but I also feel no guilt for shutting down my computer while people still have unfinished transfers. I want to go to sleep when I want, and my computer is noisy as hell. Sorry dudes.

tylero (tylero), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah i only get slightly annoyed at people who turn off when i'm dling something if they're never back on like even over a month later and i just need like two tracks and the thing i'm dling was damn near impossible to find in the first place and even then only very very slightly annoyed. i only ban people if they ban me or if they're not sharing anything and they're dling from me and i notice.

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:15 (twenty years ago)

I never feel guilty about that. There is always, always someone still downloading whenever I want to log off. They'll live.

I think I sent him Reel 2 Real feat. The Mad Stuntman or something equally absurd.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 29 January 2006 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I had about 8-10 leechers hit me within 10 minutes yesterday so I started up chats with most of them for my own amusement. "Are your shares friends-only?" Responses ranged from the equivalent of "HOW DO I SHOT WEB?" to "FUCK U, DO WHAT WANT." I don't automatically ban if a leecher is getting one really interesting track, but Jesus, what kind of moron queues up the complete works of Led Zeppelin then tells me to fuck off for calling him on it? Dawp!

They're obviously foreign (Japanese on the basis of one word I understand...), so that undoubtedly means 'the'.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 29 January 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

TaToka wants to know if you're a man or a woman (he/she's probably portuguese)

dfunari is telling you to "do it, idiot!", I think. Probably brazilian, "trouxa" isn't common slang in Portugal.

necogurgel thinks you have a great name - again, brazilian, "legal" isn't used anywhere else.

francisco gabriel sounds italian and, tho I don't speak the language, it's close enough to portuguese for me to be reasonably certain that what he's saying is: "I am a samurai and you should talk to me or else...nothing...hahahaha...sorry, that was just a little joke. Where are you speaking from? "

I envy Gareth's slsk social life!

[19:50][me] you've returned something like 100 files to me, didja realize that?
[19:51][me] and you should really change your sharing options so you're just sharing music instead of sharing EVERY SINGLE FUCKING FILE ON YOUR HARD DRIVE
[19:52][me] i'm receiving files from you with names like LRSETUP.EXE, startinglocation.kml, and textreuse.dat
[19:52][me] how do I know this stuff isn't a bunch of nasty viruses?
[19:53][me] and how do you know you don't have a bunch of personal information (credit card info, passwords) available on slsk for the whole world to see?
[19:53][me] i've already banned you, but apparently there's no way to stop you from automatically returning uploads
[19:53][me] so for the love of god, PLEASE set your upload return policy to "do not return uploads"
[19:56][me] ok, I feel justified in sending a big "FUCK YOU" in your direction
[19:56][me] free of charge
[19:56][me] (and don't even think about "returning" it, dickass)

he has yet to respond, and I've alerted him to the problem (politely and civilly at first) twice already. is there any way to prevent people from returning files to you? cuz this is getting kinda frustrating

Never banned anyone; but if I did, it would surely be one of those idiots who keep thousands of files in a single folder. Also, anyone d/ling 5kr3wdriver's (pre-nazi) debut would get immediately banned if a browse of their files revealed any white-power music.

there's no folder called soulseek chat logs in my hard drive..

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 15:17 (sixteen years ago)

Don't know what to say then.

Xpost: I keep all my files in a single folder, there's half a dozen reasons for it, and banning me isn't going to make me change.

That said, the only thing more frustrating than people who download containing folder all those files are those who continue to do it after they realize what they're doing!

An impromptu concert by Boz Scaggs (EDB), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

That being said I can sympathize as to being annoyed by it, although I have maybe one or two full albums on my hard drive, and those are just albums with a single or two tracks anyways.

An impromptu concert by Boz Scaggs (EDB), Wednesday, 5 August 2009 15:28 (sixteen years ago)

Hm. Well, if you've got actual deliberate reasons of your own for doing so, then that's different, and I apologize.

Any talk of banning on my part is theoretical anyways - like I said, I've never done so, nor felt the need to.
