OPO Tracks sung by Martin Gore

Kind of influenced by "Damaged People", which I consider great, but maybe a bit too obviously based on "I Don't Know How To Love Him".

So I still guess I end up choosing "A Question Of Lust" as before. :)

"A Question Of Lust" but i'm no DM expert.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 16 January 2006 02:21 (twenty years ago)

ARRRRRRGH. Pick just one? Argh.

*broods*

For right this second and right this second ONLY, "Home," thanks to that rhythmic way he delivers the verses, how the chorus suddenly turns into this beautiful sweeping anthem, how his guitar at the end just carries the tone of the song perfectly. And because he sang it brilliantly the other month in LA.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 16 January 2006 02:28 (twenty years ago)

i would go with "compulsion" on the first counterfeit ep

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Monday, 16 January 2006 02:29 (twenty years ago)

piscesboy, Monday, 16 January 2006 02:34 (twenty years ago)

aaaagh OPO aaaaagh DOES NOT COMPUTE

I'll third "A Question of Lust" for now.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 16 January 2006 02:34 (twenty years ago)

And the prechorus of "People Are People"!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 16 January 2006 02:37 (twenty years ago)

"Home", definitely. The way he delivers the words in the verse that on paper are quite awful but sound just menacing and beautiful.. that's rare stuff.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 16 January 2006 02:37 (twenty years ago)

I like 'Home,' too. Good one, Ned.

That I Could Clamber to the Frozen Moon and Draw the Ladder (Freud Junior), Monday, 16 January 2006 02:53 (twenty years ago)

Just listened to this. I think it would probably would have been better if sung by David G. (The lyrics are painful

"A Question of Lust" or his cover of Sparks' "Never Turn Your back on Mother Earth."

DEATH'S DOOR

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 03:31 (twenty years ago)

gotta second the vote for Compulsion off of Counterfeit. Absolutely love that song as sung by Mr. Gore.

biz, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 03:36 (twenty years ago)

If we're talking any of his covers, "In a Manner of Speaking"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 03:36 (twenty years ago)

BAH! This question makes my heard hurt.

Covers - Motherless Child
Otherwise - Blue Dress.

John Justen (johnjusten), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 04:17 (twenty years ago)

the Bottom Line

Some Guy, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 05:27 (twenty years ago)

I would go back to his earlier (the earliest?) efforts: "It Doesn't Matter," which has a kind of expressive fragility, and "Somebody," as sappy as that is.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 05:38 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
I underrated his performance of Julee Cruise's "In My Other World" until now.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 April 2007 02:51 (nineteen years ago)

"The Things You Said." Totally.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 7 April 2007 05:35 (nineteen years ago)

Can I redefine "one" so that it means "all"?

HI DERE, Saturday, 7 April 2007 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

By all means.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 April 2007 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

DEATH'S DOOR OTMFM

two months pass...

A Question of Lust. Or Home. But I'm keen to hear this Death's Door thing, and "Enjoy the Silence" (Harmonium version only) which wikipedia tells me about. Any good?

ledge, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

The Harmonium version of "Enjoy the Silence" is a notable curiosity but not as great as the album version.

"Macro" is fucking blinding, you guys; a real tour de force.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

"A Question of Lust," the performance of which at karaoke once embarrassed me.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Said harmonium version is also, I think, one of only two of Martin's demos to have seen official release.

"Macro" is quite great, it needed a little time to sink in. And for some reason at first I thought Dave was singing it! God knows why.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 June 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

I think I had a similar reaction when I first heard "Macro". He goes really deep in his chest for the vocal; the result is sort of Dave-like.

I'd probably have to go with "The Things You Said" for my thread choice. I love Martin's performance on "Home" but I think Dave could have done a good job with it too, whereas I couldn't see Dave doing the former with the same delicacy. (At least not in 1987 heh.)
