music is its own reward

On acceptance of his lifetime achievement award at the recent Brit Awards, Sting said 'Music is its own reward' and left it at that. What led him to say that? Has anyone ever said anything more pretentiously empty? Does it actually mean anything - am I missing something? Didn't he know he'd get laughed out of town? I'm genuinely interested, so please don't just write 'coz he's a cunt' or whatever.

Perhaps he is just genuinely suggesting that the Brit Award is worthless compared to the pleasure he gets out of making music?

Oh, and coz he's a cunt too.

I'm hoping I'm not wandering into the hysteria of the RIAA thread again here - but the statement can be read two ways.

1. He is declaring all his works public domain, or at least retaining copyright under something similar to the GNU 'copyleft'.

2. (If not 1) he's a c***. oh you asked us not just write that.

I think Sting might have read it somewhere the day before and just said the first music related thing that came to mind, I bet he was more worried about how the 'Suit' was going down. I ask you. Slogans and ragged seams should be left to the 'Kids' in Denim young enough to carry it, or David Bowie. Though I'm sure even Bowie would draw the line at wearing 'Designer' that had clearly missed one or more benches on leaving the premises only to be found by Screen Printing Students and desecrated more. Arse.

Should't 'knock' Sting really he's given up some good stuff, the 'Brits' seem to be a breeding ground for pomposity. They don't make thing easy.

I expect performing at the launch event for Windows XP was its own reward as well. I'm sure he didn't get a penny.

Haha! And whoring himself out to all those Compaq commercials, which I'm sure was its own reward as well.
