Are there?

Yes.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:20 (eleven years ago) Permalink

no. they are unique.

keyth (keyth), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:21 (eleven years ago) Permalink

list 'em, please.
i've been listening to hypermagic mountain too much.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:22 (eleven years ago) Permalink

er, you could search: Pink and Brown, Ruins, Orthrelm/Octis/Mick Barr related stuff, Necronomitron, Melt Banana, the first Die Kreuzen album, Sonny Sharrock, tie dye t-shirts, Extreme Animals, Sid and Marty Kroft, Mr. Brinkmann's "Transmittens" CD blah blah blah

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:23 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Er, I'd stear you away from Melt-Banana if you're looking for Lightning Bolt soundalikes. Do try out Ruins, although I don't like them as much.

Mickey (modestmickey), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:37 (eleven years ago) Permalink

I'd also suggest hella. and if you haven't heard lightning bolt's previous album (wonderful rainbow) I'd suggesting getting that too, personally I think its way better than hypermagic mountain.

i've also heard USAISAMONSTER is lightning bolt-ish, but I've never really listened to them so I can't say. You might just want to check out other bands that are on load records.

eh, Thursday, 24 November 2005 20:01 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Check out Olneyville Sound System. Not exactly so much a band that sounds like Lightning Bolt, but a band without which Lightning Bolt could never exist. OSS, you see, was one of the progenitors of the whole Providence "noise" scene.

Also, check out Fat Day for a slightly more metallic, riffy sound. I've only ever seen them live, however, so don't quote me on this recommendation.

And Orthrelm does the same kinda stuff, only with guitars instead of bass and with better drumming. Lightning Bolt is better, of course, because their songs are much better and catchier.

To plug one of my favorite blogs here, check out http://everythingisfire.com

She (I think it's a she?) posted a couple songs from Hypermagic Mountain, and posts a fair amount of other similar albums.

Afrimampo just occured to me -- you may want to check them out. Everythingisfire posted a couple songs from their last album on Tzadik.

There are a lot of bands that sound like Lightning Bolt. But Lightning Bolt generally stands out as one of the best of that sound.
That said, take a look at Stop/Eject Records and American Tapes. Both have bands that sound similar enough to stand next to Lightning Bolt on mixtapes.

Definitely USAISAMONSTER. They're not that similar, but totally great

Don't Lightning Bolt and Melt Banana both use the same octave pedal doo-hickey? Maybe I'm talking shit but I seem to recall someone else pointing this out.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 25 November 2005 07:00 (eleven years ago) Permalink

Ruins' discography is pretty variable--avoid the "orchestral" records. My favorite is the one that's got "B.U.G." on it.

The first couple of American Heritage releases if you can still track them down. They aren't as spazzy but have this crazy, relentless, polyrhythmic riffing thing going.

OSS is (was?) great but I don't think they ever successfully captured their live sound in a recording.

I'd also recommend Astoveboat if you're looking for drum/bass rumbling noise things. IIRC they predated OSS.

Although for the record there aren't many bands that "sound like" Lightning Bolt. Which is the point.

i'll concede the resemblance may be kinda superficial (i haven't heard either recently), but i think it's fair to say if you like lightning bolt, you'd probably find guapo of interest.

I just went over to LB's homepage... I still can't seem to get excited about this band :/ The way the drumming constantly flops in/out of sync sorta bothers me in a amateur-but-not-good-amateur way.

fandango (fandango), Friday, 25 November 2005 17:40 (eleven years ago) Permalink

downloading the duracell guy now :)

Olneyville Sound System were one of the best Providence bands ever, whatever the era. My favorite album of theirs is probably "On Safari," but they're all unique and have different things to recommend them. The free jazz OSS album, "Efforts in Freedumb," is also fantastic and shows them stretching away from the bludgeoning trash rock of earlier releases.

The Psychic Paramount (featuring 2 former Laddio Bolocko members), but they're even better than Lightning Bolt (whom I love).
