does anyone know anything about sunscreem? the dance collective that was active in the late 90's? There's this song by them that is like spoken words(sort of general advice) over a dance beat. anyone at all kno what i'm talking about? I'd really appreciate if someone could provide me with the song title!

i think you're conflating the sunscreem of "luv u more" fame with baz luhrmann's "everybody's free (to wear sunscreen)," which is a graduation speech set to music, basically. unless sunscreem had a song like that, too, which doesn't seem likely.

"Luv U More" was lovely, though I never understood what making the sun "turn turtle" meant.

Oh you love it.

Poor cover of "Broken English" in any event.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 October 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, they had a few great songs:

"Love U More"
"Perfect Motion"
"Catch"
and I even like "When"

but I can see why others would hate/despise them

Sunscreem were a pretty good singles band. I quite liked the cover of 'Broken English', but it was one of their weaker singles.

They once pulled out of Glastonbury as they were about the only dance band playing, and wanted to make a point. The next year Glastonbury introduced the dance tent, so it worked (perhaps).

Ned, I didn't say I didn't like the song! But that lyric is a total clunker.

The first band I ever saw play live twice = Sunscreem. FACT.

(opening for Inspiral Carpets, then opening for New Order five months later)

I WANTED TO BE IN THIS BAND, THAT'S HOW MUCH THEY SUCKED

Weirdo.

They were kinda like a superior Republica. If you squint.

Half of Juliet's album reminds me of Sunscreem, the other half is better tho!

As fathers rape their daughters

Cripes, is that actually the lyric?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

That is the actual lyric! It's one of the reasons why they're brilliant.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 21 October 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

hahah i was gonna ask the same thing, alex. i really loved this song when i was little but i don't remember that lyric at all! yikes.

joseph (joseph), Friday, 21 October 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

It's just such a euphoric sounding tune, though -- it's kind've an incongruous and disconcerting little line to throw in there.
