Rodney Crowell The Outsider

Rodney's latest is by far the most rocking thing he has ever done. I would not consider the majority of it country to be honest. Including his latest and The Houston Kid and Fate's Right Hand I believe that Rodney has crafted a impeccable trilogy. Anyone else dig his stuff?

Yeah, I'm a fan. My faves are still the debut and 'Keys to the Highway.' Great production for Rosanne Cash, of course, too.

Crowell's new one is solid as usual, still in the highly autobiographical vein of his recent work. Backed by the same guys that recorded "Diamonds & Dirt," but sounds far more stripped down and rootsy. I have, however, been reading his memoir, which I did not know existed: "Chinaberry Sidewalks." Beautifully written stuff. Here's Crowell on the roaches in his hole of a childhood home: "To flick the light on there in the middle of a scalding July night meant entering a dimension where every inch of surface space was swarmed by their translucent, root-beer liquidity, giving the table, chairs, stove and refrigerator the look of a living, breathing, and grotesque organism." Root-beer liquidity - what a great way to describe a swarm of roaches.

Heard this mentioned when I saw him onstage with Rosanne Cash as part of a round-robin with John Leventhal, Cory Chisel, and Amy Helm. I want to check out his music and book, but haven't done so yet.

Kinda ticked I didn't find out he was playing a little urban honky tonk near my house 'til the day after the gig a few days ago.

Yeah, thanks! He's always good, but last year's Texas was a stand-out, with Billy F. Gibbons and other cool guests.

Listening to 2021's Triage, which I had no idea even existed, and really enjoying it. Haven't heard this year's The Chicago Sessions yet.
