I like it. I could maybe go and see him tomorrow in a venue bigger than seems right for him

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 13:59 (7 years ago) Permalink

The guy is insanely talented. Believe the hype. He has a voice for the ages, amazing lyrics and is one of the few who can successfully walk the line between beautiful traditional songcraft and out-in-the-dunes sonic headfucker-y.

Go see him. He will fill that place up even if it's empty, dig?

Pharmaceutical Executive, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:59 (7 years ago) Permalink

I need another listen. His voice was a bit off-putting at first, but I think it's growing on me. The other thing I need to do is buy some marijuana and smoke that before I listen to stuff like this.

I saw him a month ago at the Cube Cinema in Bristol, where he was ace... especially the bit when he was working up a storm of looped guitar noise and some dude appeared from behind a curtain and started playing some free clarinet noise over the top. Tonight I'm seeing him at Fiddlers in Bristol - which has a mighty sound system - and I suspect he will kick further ass.

Oh, you were asking about the album. Dunno, haven't heard it.

I'm really curious about this - anyone willing to YSI or something?

i like "portal".
freak folk meets post rock kranky style with fine results.
(strangely, it sounds like an american project)

I've enjoyed everything I've heard by him on at least some level but I'm slightly less enamoured by him after he pulled out of my friend's show a while back citing the unarguable "personal reasons", which was in fact that he'd been offered, and accepted, a support slot with Bardo Pond in London that same night

Kentish isn't he?

So this album's been out for a while now.

I can't be the only one who loves this, right?

PG Harpy (Doran), Wednesday, 4 May 2011 20:25 (2 years ago) Permalink

seen him twice, thought he sucked both times - utterly predictable looping/overlaying of acoustic gtr figures and tedious quiet-loud dynamics.

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 4 May 2011 20:29 (2 years ago) Permalink

Agree with Ward. I was really into him until I saw him live. I guess I'm just really, really, really tired of dudes doing effects pedal demonstrations. Roy Montgomery had the market cornered on that shit in like '91.

I think there's a lot more going on with Dorwytch than what you're describing but each to their own.

Dorwytch is a brilliant album. His lyrics are sometimes a bit daft but that isn't a fatal flaw. A better album than a lot of releases that get bigged up by pitchfork. I only say this because they savaged Portal and gave it 2.0. Sonically it reminds me of a more bohemian Heartland by Owen Pallet and is as good as that album, if not as celebrated.

Just heard Dorwytch for the first time last night and this person is totally otm -- amazing! beautiful!

Has anyone heard Third Mouth? I impulse-bought it from Thrill Jockey in a fit of excitement, but I'm waiting to listen to it until the LP arrives.

yup, i've heard Third Mouth.... it's not a big step forward or back, if you like Dorwytch you're gonna like it just fine!

ilxor, Sunday, 8 April 2012 19:09 (1 year ago) Permalink

Yeah, I really like Third Mouth a lot - you won't be disappointed.

I guess I owe this thread a revival because I love Third Mouth! Sometimes his songs get a little samey after a while, but that's about the worst thing I have to say. Otherwise, love this guy, especially when he sings super low.

This is a good one from Third Mouth

"mullioned view" is my jam on the new album, that whole arrangement is killer

The end of "Mullioned View" is the best.

Also, this album has been a staple of 2012. A well-chosen impulse buy!

"Andromeon" is probably my #1 favorite song from the whole album though. I love the vocal parts. Droney, beautiful, humming/buzzing with sounds. So evocative!

passion it person (La Lechera), Monday, 3 December 2012 16:05 (5 months ago) Permalink

I def still need to listen to the new one. Will probably do so this week.

Was thinking about Dorwytch--and you too, LL--while listening to the new Hexvessel a frw days back. For some rrazon, I want to lump the two albums together.
