What the heck is that pleasant little Shins' ditty doing in a McDonalds commercial? What next... New Order pandering at the feet of Sunkist? Oh wait... that happened. Anyway, back to the Shins... what the hell?

are you being serious?

Yeah, very disconcerting. If it were anything other than "New Slang" I wouldn't care, but the only reason they got any attention was that single. Absolutely the best pop song of last year. And now it will be tied to Mickey D's. Fuckers. I have yet to see it and I hope I don't.

INDIE DEAD. DEAD INDIE, DEAD!

Also: Why McDonalds and what the hell is the point of that baby in the commercial? It's edited (quite sloppily) to seem poignant, but maybe we're supposed to ponder the baby's sad future after her/his arteries have hardened from those nasty fries and regurgitated meat products the dad's force-feeding the little tot. Who's responsible for this minor debacle? The Shins? Subpop?

I'd hasten to say I felt taken, but...sort of. The Shins came out with a calm aesthetic that took me back to the pre-DGC days when you could buy Sub Pop, Merge and Matador records in most stores, sans the 800 kids trying to become "The True Fan" of band X (and the 800 others telling you "the drummer's Dad owns Nike and they're rich brats so f*ck them").

The original 8mm video (on the CD) and the for-TV remake are both perfect visual accompaniment for (I concur) the sweetest single to come out of independent music in a long time. Seeing the McDonald's logo over it was sort of disheartening. Hopefully they made a lot of money; they've run that ad during every night of NBC's Olympic coverage.

Well Ned maybe they can make some Big Macs from their bodies. ;-)

I didn't exactly see the Sam Goodys of the world rushing to stock those items.

Wait ... McDonald's commercial uses Shins song containing line about "dirt in your fries?"

Are they trying to tell us something?

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 20 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

yeah, and the Looper song played for those awful Xerox ads during the Olympics... also remember hearing staralful by sigur ros, but i cant remember what they were selling..

yeah i saw the McDonald's commercial during the Olympics Womens Free Skate. It was really bizarre- a man playing with a baby and you could here the beginning of "new slang" in the background. i had no idea it was a Mcdonald's commercial till the very end when they showed that McDonalds "smile" symbol. it was kind of disturbing really. but does anyone know how this may have happened? because some bands sell their music to a licensing agency not knowing where it will go. My guess is that the Shins didn't intend for "new slang" ending up as a McDonalds promotion.

Maybe it wasn't really The Shins. I mean, I hope to God that James Mercer is making better management decisions than that. We could get lucky and find out that it was something else.

Why does this bother anyone? There are literally thousands of songs used in commercials and they run for a few weeks or months and that's it. There's nothing special or shocking to me about The Shins popping up in a McDonalds commercial. Sometimes it's even exciting, like when Acura used "Instrumental" by Galaxie 500 to pretty cool effect.

I won't lie and say I haven't fallen for it (McDonald's) but it's a damn shame that the shins have sold out to supercorporate craziness.

one year passes...
how is it selling out if they havent changed their writing process? they sold the song for profit, what's the harm?
