Take Sides: Nicky Hopkins vs Ian Stewart

Battle of the 6th Stoneses! The unattractive pianists!

Nicky Hopkins: played on "You Got the Silver," "Loving Cup," "Jigsaw Puzzle," and so much more. Toured with the Stones from '68-'73.

Ian Stewart: The original 6th Stone -- though chronologically he was, in fact, the second. Plays on "Brown Sugar," "Sweet Virginia," "Stop Breaking Down," and almost every Stones album pre-1986, including the truly awful ones.

So -- Nicky has the advantage of only being a Stone during their prime, but Stu stuck with them through thick and thin and even "Undercover."

I think I gotta give it to Nicky, just for "No Expectations." But it's tough.

Was the Kinks' "Session Man" written about Nicky Hopkins?

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 21:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Was it? I know he played on "Sunny Afternoon," and lots more. Seems appropriate, if so.

His name was proposed as an answer to the question Who Was Session Man Written About on a multiple choice quiz in Trouser Press, but I never found out what the right answer was.

Wasn't Ian Stewart a Nazi? He loses then.

Google sez:
Also present was 'Session Man', Ray's tongue-in-cheek 'tribute' to pianist Nicky Hopkins who had played on numerous Kinks' sessions. Who could resist its lyric - "He's a session man, a chord progressian, a top musician" - nor its sense of irony.

As this thread indicates, session guys continue to get no love.

Ian Stuart was a nazi.

Ian Stewart was just unattractive.

Though Ian Stuart did get his start in a Stones cover band, if I remember right.

Ian Stuart was a nazi

sorry for being pointlessly stoopid. I'm pissed. and any excuse to laugh at the dead nazi cunt.

"Boogie With Stu"!

Whereas Ian Stewart got his start in the actual Stones, but was kicked out for being too ugly or dressing too straight, but then brought back in around the back as roadie/sideman.

xpost:
Yeah, "Boogie with Stu."

I don't think Stewart was unattractive.

For balance, here's Nicky Hopkins, looking very Stones-y:

But, yeah, he's looks less Stonesy than Hopkins.

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 22:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Looking appropriately Stonesy is the reason Ron Wood is an "official" Stone and Darryl Jones never will be.

Ian Stewart has the same facial bone malformation dealie that Jay Leno has.
Management and label-types thought he didn't look like a Stone, but I suspect that had an issue with the dude's chin, from what I've read.

That picture makes it look like Darryl is still learning the songs from Keef whilst onstage.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 23:38 (eighteen years ago) link

I think Ian Stewart looks a bit like Morrissey, actually.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Wednesday, 21 September 2005 00:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Don't tell Morrissey that, or he'll slap you!

four years pass...

...to the original question: Nicky

God, his playing on "Loving Cup" is just resplendent.
