What the hell was that? "You Made Me Realize"? I've never heard anybody brag about that bassline. I had the same reaction to about half of those pick -- I had to take a minute to remember what the bassline sounds like.

11. New Order -- Blue Monday
12. Snoop Doggy Dogg -- What's my Name (no G or P-funk on the list, but RHCP and Primus made the cut? WTFFFFFFFF?)

Actually, it is interesting to see a list which is clearly not indebted to the usual suspects of rock and soul (and I guess why "Thank You" wasn't included). However, judging by what was included, basslines have gotten a lot more minimal and a lot less "funky".

Bruce S. Urquhart (BanjoMania), Friday, 16 September 2005 20:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Had I remembered that we were doing this feature I'd have taken a fuck of a lot more time thinking about it and I would have recommended more than 3. I kind of assumed the rest of the staff would remember Bootsy and Macca and "Right On" and "Thank You..." and and and and and etcetera ad infinitum but I guess it's that thing when everyone thinks someone else will do the obvious ones and no one actually does.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 16 September 2005 20:39 (eighteen years ago) link

But yeah...

Deee-Lite - "Groove Is In The Heart"

The Stone Roses - "Fools Gold"

It'd be almost too easy to pack the list with stuff from Chic, PIL, Bootsy and Jamerson. At least they had the good sense to represent one track from each, give them that.
