San Diego's favourite sons, Rocket From The Crypt, are splitting up. I know what you're thinking; "First Hot Snakes, now this? This is a wind-up, surely?" Guess again, meatball. Sadly, this is on the level.
In a message on RFTC's website, Swami Impresario and the band's frontman, John Reis (aka Speedo) had this to say:
"On Halloween night in San Diego, Rocket from the Crypt will be playing our farewell show. After 16 years of scars and ear damage all in the name of spreading goodwill and the Rock N Roll doctrine, we will take the stage for the last time on our favorite day of the year.
"We know that it is very difficult for those around the world to be with us for this celebration, but we invite all that have been a part of this awesome ride to come out one more time and give it up for the band."
Details on a number of different ticket-buying deals are featured on the RFTC website. Some of these include a hotel room as part of the purchase. But unless you're in the States, or happen to have a flippin' great wodge of cash in the bank that you've been saving up for the end of an era in punk rock, you're stuffed.
And that sadly, is that.

John Reis via the Swami board:
We are going to play a short set accompanied by San Diego Civic organist Dr. Carol Williams. If you have never heard the sound of the Spreckle's pipe organ, you are in for a treat. It's a beautiful instrument. The show is free

This is key, BTW. This whole thing is SO San Diego in the best way:
"The appeal for me is, I love the Spreckels pipe organ," said Reis, who is the leader of the San Diego bands Night Marchers, Hot Snakes and Rocket From The Crypt, which last year reunited after an 8-year hiatus."I think the pavilion is one of the jewels of San Diego, without a doubt," he continued. "That San Diego has a civic organist on the payroll is pretty great. I just love the sound of that instrument. It captivates me; it's such a great sound! When I was a kid, Organ Power Pizza in Pacific Beach had this pipe organ and I thought it was the coolest thing in the world."

― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:28 (nine years ago) link
And from the organist:
"The Spreckels organ is a very strong instrument that can hold itself with any form of music, so this will be a fun night," she said. "They don't have a keyboard in the band, but that doesn't matter, because I'll be sympathetic to what they do. They have a great (lead) guitarist (Reis) and I've been enjoying what they're doing (on their two albums). The organ certainly won't be overpowered. I'm memorizing the songs and I'll improvise when we play them."
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 August 2014 16:30 (nine years ago) link
So they are surely gonna do "Luau" for this, right? All that organ bass surely gonna sound cool pounding that riff into the ground.

I was worried the organ was going to be a weird addition, but honestly in the moments when you could hear it (few and far between), it enhanced the music - Luau being the best example.

Was lazy and never saw DLJ back then, so there was no way I was going to miss this. It's hard to get a feel for the organ through the Ustream feed, but in person it's an immense enveloping sound that you could perceive but not really hear over the band. "Luau" seriously intense.

Officially official i.e. Coachella & an ATP in Iceland. Not sure how I feel about it, but I am sure they will deliver the songs and be good live, just kind of weird. Really I would take a new album over seeing the old stuff live, but will surely go if they come within a couple of hours of where I live.

that got posted somewhere, maybe on another jehu thread.
biggest takeaway was how trombino still sounded hurt that reis and froburg did other stuff on their own right after jehu.

2nd biggest takeaway: young john reis idolizing doc severinsen
― gr8080, Saturday, 12 March 2016 22:35 (eight years ago) link
Trombino comes off the best, verifying for me that he is the secret sauce of why the band has stood the test of time in ways that Hot Snakes/Pitchfork falls short of DLJ's legacy, esp. Yank Crime. Bear in mind that I was also a huge Honor Role/Breadwinner, Bastro/Gastr del Sol & Slint fan at the time.
Rick presented this interesting conflict in retrospect as of today he thinks Yank Crime was his best work but at the time he was bored of the proggier song structures and playing octave chords.
Reis is obviously a career musician and when RftC became his meal ticket, he dropped DLJ. It was interesting to hear him attempt to validate that.
I recently caught the reunion tour and they were fantastic.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Sunday, 20 March 2016 18:56 (eight years ago) link
IDK, Trombino may have been a crucial ingredient and I appreciate his earnestness, but guy comes off as a little neurotic and not easy to deal with in this thing. His fears that the death of Jehu was brought on by him sucking the fun out of the experience may be not TOTALLY unfounded.
― circa1916, Sunday, 20 March 2016 19:30 (eight years ago) link
Hearing the timeline of what was happening with both DLJ and Rocket, it's hard to blame Reis for his decisions. Think most people in the situation would've done the same. Doesn't need to "attempt to validate" anything.
