S/D: Stooges Outtakes

So I've got the three official Stooges albums in their latest, newest versions, as well as "Metallic KO" and "Kill City." I'd like to explore some of their unreleased stuff but I have no clue what's worth getting. I'm not a completist, I'd really like one disc that has (relatively) decent sound quality and a good pick of the stray songs that never found a proper home. What's the essential, best Stooges outttakes/demos CD?

the sound-quality varies (to say the least) from good to bad, but i like open up and bleed cuz it is a likely grouping of songs that probably would have ended up (in some form or another) on another album. if there had been another album. and it was compiled to be such a grouping as well. (demo stuff sounds best, natch.)

1. Rubber Legs (5.23)
2. Open Up And Bleed (4.55)
3. Johanna (4.37)
4. Cock In My Pocket (3.52)
5. Head On (5.43)
6. Cry For Me (6.48)
7. Rich Bitch (9.54)
8. Wet My Bed (5.36)
9. I Got Nothing (4.02)
10. Heavy Liquid/New Orleans (5.59)
11. She Creatures Of The Hollywood Hills (4.49)
12. Rubber Legs (5.41)

That version of "Head On" that's on there--if it's the one I'm thinking of (I have it on a French vinyl EP)--is awesome, one of my favorite Stooges moments. Was just listening to it this morning.

Heavy Liquid!

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Is Heavy Liquid the 6 CD thing? Why do I need 6 CD's of outtakes, is it really that good?

Joseph B. Cowart (flamingrev), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard everything but I think these songs are worth tracking down:

I'm Sick Of You
Tight Pants
I Got A Right
Johanna
The Scene of the Crime
Gimme Some Skin

sometimes i think "i got a right" is the best stooges song

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I'm not advocating the 6 cd's of outtakes, i'm just emphasizing the song HEAVY LIQUID. It's one of my favorite song titles.
Yeah, depending on the day, I Gotta Right is my favorite Stooges song.

four years pass...

two months pass...

i've got all three stooges albums, but nothing else. i just heard "i gotta right" for the first time and i'd really like to find this sort of stuff... by that, i mean the other stuff they recorded once they got back together. i'm not all that interested in a bunch of live recordings and whatnot (although if they never got around to recording certain songs, i guess live recordings will suffice), but i have no idea where to begin.

kill city? gimme a clue, please.

If you want everything then that Heavy Liquid box is probably the place to go. I think the first two discs are studio sessions.

I'm not sure there's much for non-live cuts that aren't Kill City? Kill City for me has always been this album with tons of great songs, but like James Williamson's guitars don't sound right, Iggy doesn't sound totally into it...I think I actually prefer the live bootlegs (particularly Open Up And Bleed as mentioned above, though there seems to be a deluge of these sort of bootlegs available <mostly on Bomp?> and I'm not up on all of 'em)

Metallic KO doesn't sound the greatest though it's a pretty fun recording as it seems there's a biker gang after Iggy.

xpost Well shut my mouth wrt lack of non-live stuff.

The original open up is def the one to go for, but watch out as there's a fake open up and bleed with a slightly inferior tracklisting

Jamie_ATP, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

FYI, there is a reissue of Kill City in the pipeline and it sounds a MILLION times better. Stay tuned.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 23:50 (sixteen years ago)

hrm. how will i know which open up is the one to go for? any ways to tell?

zingzing, Wednesday, 14 April 2010 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

The problem with Kill City is that it sounds like demos. Knowing The Stooges, you can kind of fill in the blanks on what could have been done with the material. It's not a terrible listen or anything, but it is what it is.

That being said, I Got A Right is intense as anything Iggy ever did. That tune is punk as fxxk.

Kill City Rules. I think the songs are uniformly great although I would be interested in some kind of remastered rerelease thingy.

Hinklepicker, Thursday, 15 April 2010 04:21 (sixteen years ago)

1. "Rubber Legs" - 5:22
2. "Open Up And Bleed" - 4:55
3. "Johanna" - 4:37
4. "Cock In My Pocket" - 3:51
5. "Head On" (Williamson) - 5:42
6. "Cry For Me" - 6:47
7. "Rich Bitch" (Pop) - 9:54
8. "Wet My Bed" - 5:36
9. "I Got Nothing" (Pop) - 4:02
10. "Heavy Liquid/New Orleans" - 5:59
11. "She Creatures Of The Hollywood Hills" - 4:48
12. "Rubber Legs" (Version 2) (Williamson) - 5:40

is the one, you can order it direct from bomp i think. looking forward to that kill city reissue!

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 15 April 2010 07:25 (sixteen years ago)

Year Of The Iguana is a kind of best of the outtakes CD also on Bomp! that's pretty damn good.

I really like Kill City. It doesn't really sound like the Stooges but it's still great.

three weeks pass...

It seems like I caught a glimpse of a set of Stooges recordings, probably live, from 1971. I believe it was four discs. When I went back to the blog, it was nowhere to be found. Does anyone know anything about this?

ImprovSpirit, Thursday, 6 May 2010 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

was it this? http://punknotprofit.blogspot.com/2010/03/stooges-1971.html
