sweet...i think that's the project patti dean was working on....

Kruddler/Unbelievable Jolly Machine/Eric/MC Mike Suade (Entry), 02/25/2000.

i'm glad my old bands show with mike suade and kruddler is being preserved for future generations!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Wow, what a trove.

Ten years ago today: Soul Asylum/The Jayhawks/Victoria Williams/Matthew Sweet (Midway Stadium, St. Paul)

asl, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

BTW - showlist starts in 1981, not 1977. My bad.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

haha oh lord I'm gonna be on this forever

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

haha omg MIKE SUADE omg haha

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:46 (twenty years ago)

(that sounds like a dis but it's not, he's a nice guy. I just haven't heard or thought about that name in YEARS.)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

(plus Mpls makes me all nostalgic and shit)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Okay, the Bungle show where I hyperextended my elbow and the Consolidated show where they made the audience crave meat by showing slaughterhouse footage aren't on this list.

The Depth Probe that introduced me to Savage Aural Hotbed IS on there, though!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the NIN show from the first tour is also strangely absent. Must go search for Meat Beat Manifesto now...

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, they are missing the June of 44 show that I saw in June or July of 95 too. I was curious to remember who they played with...

ianinportland (ianinportland), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

You mean the NIN show that MY MOM WOULDN'T LET ME GO TO? Grr.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

My first show isn't listed (Melvins / Mainroom circa Spring '99). I want to pick out every show I went to and write a blurb about it. Think I'm gonna cry.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Kate, who opened at that show - or was that the "Melvins play multiple sets" one? Either way, I'm pretty sure I was there...

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

haha omg MIKE SUADE omg haha

best Mike Suade line ever....after toturing a Turf Club crowd with a seemingly endless barage of bad country covers of then-current top 40 hits (incl. Hey Ya by OutKast which was kinda wonderful)...he say, "Well, my mamma told me never to wear out my welcome, so we're just going to do five more songs."

John, did you go to that nutso packed Melvins instore at the old (real) Garage D'or back when it was on Nicollet?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Grrr...no. As a carless wonder at the time (and for much of my life), my ride fell through...

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

that site has a shellac/blonde redhead/thrones show listed as the entry, but i saw that lineup in the mainroom in one of those breakfast shows that shellac did with cartoons and pop tarts...maybe there were two shows, and the lineup also played the entry? anyone remember?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

I poptended both of the first two Shellac Sunday A.M. shows in robe & pajamas!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Goodness, I can't remember. No one notable, at least at the time. Putting together a timeline...Damn, the Chicks on Speed / Hawaii Show in the Entry is missing. That was a really bad first date.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

and then there was the guy you went to the show with! (sorry)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

the first Shellac Sunday A.M. was in the Entry after two nights there; the second was in the mainroom.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

And Elastica, I DJ'd between band and 2-4-1 and Mark Wheat threatened to fire me if I played "Beetlebum." Okay, I'll stop now.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

To Matos: Well then, apparently I have seen you in pajamas. I was the horribly hungover groggy looking guy...in the sea of hungover groggy looking guys.

To Kate: I was also at the Chicks on Speed show. In order to convince a friend of mine to drive me to the show, I had a conversation like this:

Me: We should go to this show.
Him: Why?
Me: Um...they wear clothes made out of paper?
Him: Do they tear them off or anything?
Me: Um...yes?

Wow, did he ever hate that show.

John Justen (johnjusten), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

We never did stay for Chicks on Speed. I saw them a year or two later on the electroclash tour in the mainroom with Peaches and Tracy + the Plastics. That was a really fun show.

Kate Silver (Kate Silver), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

I remember those accoustic Bob Mould shows in 2/95. I was crouching behind parked cars in the garage next to the Entry and behind the First Ave stage, listening to his set. It was pretty much that night that I decided that I should try the whole "Living in Minneapolis" thing some other time.

Ever stood in line outside and seen one of those valets with the red vests and bowties running up and down the street from the Marriott? THAT WAS ME.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

I can't seem to find the Fugazi/Unrest/Brick Layer Cake show in 1993 either. I happened to be in MPLS visiting the girl I wasn't to marry. Surely the list is incomplete? Or perhaps its some "Eternal Sunshine..." thing.

julian, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Holy crap.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

The Nirvana show in the main room from 1991 isn't there.

Nor was the one at the Entry in 1990.

don weiner (don weiner), Thursday, 18 August 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I found out why this list is incomplete...apparently this is a list of flyers that they have on records...not a list of every show...so basically the shows that are missing didn't have fliers that could be found....it's a pretty cool collection of stuff nonetheless....i think i know the lady that's been doing it, she's on tcpunk....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

Ug...that Nirvana show from 1991 kills me....basically, a couple weeks before that me and my friends had gone up to Mankato to see the Libido Boyz at a skate ramps in someone's garage....anyway, they were giving away tickets to the Nirvana show and no one wanted them!

We were all like, "Who's Urge Overkill, who's Nirvana??" basically it seemed like too much troube to go all the way to mpls to see LB open....damn....They basically were begging someone to take them....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

This saddens me because I didn't get up to First Avenue that often and the "big event" times that I did make it are now not on record! It's like someone is retroactively erasing the miniscule amount of Twin Cities cred I had.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

yeah...i wish i would have saved more show fliers..could've donated it to this collection....i suppose it's hard to track down old show fliers, it's probably a miracle they have as many as they do....

Doesn't M@tt He1geson Deserve A Cool, Funny Login Name? (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 August 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

oh wow. wow!!

the first show i went to (wait for it) a goldfinger show a friend dragged me to in college, is lost to history. as is the "rock'n'roll girl" public access sitcom launch party thing from 2000 (i was in it, briefly), i think manplanet was the headliner.

tulip sweet! i haven't thought about her in years, i totally miss her. i was at the strokes/moldy peaches show in 01. i feel like i saw the murder city devils like 14 times there.

geoff (gcannon), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Busy Signals/Har Mar Superstar/Selby Tigers/Triangle (Entry), 07/07/2000.

i brought my girlfriend to this show! "how is this fun?"

geoff (gcannon), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

i wish i would've seen the murder city devils...never ended up going....

har mar's schtick was pretty hilarious at first...it was way funnier when he would open for random indie bands and freak people out....i saw him really annoy some teenage trans am fans at the ascot room once....

Doesn't M@tt He1geson Deserve A Cool, Funny Login Name? (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Danzig/ Soundgarden/ Correction of Conformity, 08/05/1990.
...
Public Enemy/ I.C.E. & Subzero Posse/[Queen Latifah canceled], 08/14/1990.

This was the summer where I learned I could just get in my parents' car and drive to Minneapolis to see the rock. That was a good summer.

subgenius (subgenius), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

m@tt i think i was there!

geoff (gcannon), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

That is the summer I had no idea you were driving into Minneapolis until school started up again but I had no money anyway so it was a moot point. I wish I could redo vast swaths of my childhood.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 August 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

m@tt i think i was there!
-- geoff (gffcnn...), August 18th, 2005. (gcannon)

it HAS to be the same show...how many trans am/har mar shows could there have been at the ascot room (shittiest venue evah btw)

Doesn't M@tt He1geson Deserve A Cool, Funny Login Name? (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 August 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

agricultural cadabra! (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 5 February 2010 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

Man, I LOOOOVE looking at those old calendars!

I saw Psych Furs/Our Daughter's Wedding, Bush Tetras/Wall of Voodoo, and probably Swingin' Combo (since I saw almost all their shows.)

I remember I had a comp for Adam Ant, but got there late and 1st Ave wouldn't let me in, as the club was way oversold.

Such A Hilbily (Dan Peterson), Friday, 5 February 2010 22:22 (sixteen years ago)

replacements/husker du on a MONDAY!

agricultural cadabra! (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 5 February 2010 22:26 (sixteen years ago)

This was 1981, right? Both bands were on their first album, neither was a big deal yet.

Such A Hilbily (Dan Peterson), Friday, 5 February 2010 22:33 (sixteen years ago)

Oh wait, bottom of the calendar says 1983...

Such A Hilbily (Dan Peterson), Friday, 5 February 2010 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

According to a perpetual calendar, November 29th was a Monday in 1982.

you gone float up with it (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 5 February 2010 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

So The 'Mats and The Du were on their second records, and The Furs were touring behind Forever Now and not Talk Talk Talk. I can always remember musical stuff clearer that way than by year.

Such A Hilbily (Dan Peterson), Friday, 5 February 2010 23:05 (sixteen years ago)

rifle sport is the most underrated and forgotten of the great mpls punk bands

XX Decontrol (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 5 February 2010 23:06 (sixteen years ago)

except maybe man sized action

XX Decontrol (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 5 February 2010 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

I see Pat from MSA shopping at my local grocery all the time.

Such A Hilbily (Dan Peterson), Friday, 5 February 2010 23:10 (sixteen years ago)
