jackson and his computer band - smash

i know there's a general catch-all thread for jackson and his remixes, but can we talk about the album here?

how to describe: he's definitely the type of producer who likes to recklessly pile elements on top of each other; he gets off on collision, so there's a ton going on here. he likes to wrap his noises in these giant swaths of reverb. i know people often describe electronic music as huge, but this feels heavy, almost cavernous.

i find his a lot of his sound palette reminiscent of late-90s warp, but occasionally he pulls from french house as well ("arpeggio").
sometimes he sounds like akufen on cough syrup. but mostly, because of his cumbersome, lurching insect beats and his little instrumental breakdowns, the artist he most reminds me of is amon tobin (!).

anyway, i really like the record, although i'm not sure how much yet, cause there's lots to untangle. anyone else?

i've only heard one song, the one posted on music for robots... i guess i haven't listened to it enough to "untangle" it as you say...

utopia is awesome, but it is not new, it and radio caca were on his Utopia EP released a while back. not to be spoiled, but can you u/l something else please markp? I'd VERY grateful (winkwink).

whoops, sorry! one more coming up.

mark p (Mark P), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:59 (7 years ago) Permalink

I had a chance to listen to it the other day. But only heard it the once so didn't take a lot in beyond the overall sound.
Anyhow I liked it. A lazy comparison to other warp artists would be Prefuse 73 meets Chris Clark.

Bn1, Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:33 (7 years ago) Permalink

I know what you mean Mark, some of it is pretty cacophonic; that excessiver layering bits bing the parts i'm liking the most about it. IMO is best thing warp put out all year.

pher (pher), Thursday, 11 August 2005 02:13 (7 years ago) Permalink

this thing is fucking alive. breathing and bumping and glitching out all over the place, melody intact.

cacophonic and blissful!

Great record. I like the way he uses vocals, and the production is pretty crazy.

i have a feeling i am going to respect this more than enjoy it.

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:49 (7 years ago) Permalink

Thanks Mark P! I'm enjoying it lots! It's like Squarepusher and Akufen insanely in one. Cutty OTM.

Gerard (Gerard), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:23 (7 years ago) Permalink

yeah, this is pretty much the album i was waiting for. i was kind of expecting a little more flowing blissfulness, but im finding myself liking the crunchy stomp more than i wouldve expected.

I really hope this guy gets together with some good pop vocalists like kylie or something, because his production is just perfect for it.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Thursday, 11 August 2005 15:48 (7 years ago) Permalink

like, imagine if he collaborated with annie to make a chewing gum-like track.

Want to really hear this!

Has it leaked yet? Or are you guys all on the promo tip?

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 11 August 2005 17:18 (7 years ago) Permalink

TV Dogs and Headache are just completely amazing.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 13:35 (7 years ago) Permalink

it's leaked. i don't know what you think yet. the stutter/splutter style thing gets a bit much. jackson's about as one-trick as lil jon, i suspect.

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 17:09 (7 years ago) Permalink

i think i agree. the first three tracks are pretty unimpeachable, but from there it kind of descends into a murky stew, some of which is very good and some of which is very amon tobin b-side.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 17:17 (7 years ago) Permalink

('what you think ' should've read 'what TO think')

jermaine (jnoble), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 17:27 (7 years ago) Permalink

i sort of agree with mark p, except i would change "unimpeachable" to "theyre ok", sort of like a less constipated prefuse ( i know thats a corny comparison but i still feel it holds up). but what is it with these guys, why are they so damn allergic to building a hot beat?!!?! why does glitch funk people never want to dance?!!?!

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 15:15 (7 years ago) Permalink

I don't really hear a lot of Prefuse in this. I hear more Giorgio Moroder gone glitch. Jackson is making almost-pop-songs, but yeah, he does inject a lot of mess into the beats, so I end up getting more out of headphone listening than jamming out of the stereo.

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:21 (7 years ago) Permalink

this album RULES ME

breezy, Friday, 26 August 2005 19:35 (7 years ago) Permalink

McFly on Jackson! Priceless.

Dougie: "That first song, it was just like... skipping and everything. What were they doing? I thought the CD was skipping."

Tom: "What is it? What's he actually done? Has he written a song?"

Dougie: "Is he a DJ? He's not actually written a song".

Harry: "I'm sure he'd come back with a fair argument to say, well it's gritty."

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 26 August 2005 19:53 (7 years ago) Permalink

this album has been looking at me all lost and forlorn for a few days now, as i wasn't in mood for excess glitch/clicks etc. but today i got all way through, and dense it is. not sure exactly what type of mood i should be in to fully appreciate it however. sure a few more spins and all will click into place - so far i am loving 'fast life', but its obvious why they lifted rock on/arpeggio for the single ...

and best thing on warp in 2 years ! thats plain mad ..

(for me !!!, chok rock, maximo park, jamie liddel will all get more airings than this)

mark e (mark e), Friday, 26 August 2005 19:59 (7 years ago) Permalink

BTW - the whole of that mcfly piece is wonderful and rather revealing - eg : opinion on FF - ahem ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:20 (7 years ago) Permalink

Oh, totally. That's what makes it great- and look at their "single of the week" picks, for fucking out loud! Fully half pick the Kaiser Chiefs, which is a) a rerelease and b) a dire chunk of crap, and the other two bravely buck the trend by plumping for Oasis and Black Eyed Peas. And their take on the White Stripes is fun reading as well.

Takes a while to sink in but this is far more than an 'impressive' album, the utopia-rock on-arpeggio suite is one funky streak.

I like this too... it's one of those things that prevents me from having to take psychedelics. I have a Jackson state of mind lately. specifically Hard Tits and Rock On. Unfortunately, I must file it into the overstuffed bin of things that I wished human beings would dance to. In between the right songs, Rock On will do the trick, but otherwise, absolute floor killer.

Listening over these samples again... ach!

Does this record groove as a whole after like, ten plays people? 'Cos I'm imagining it does for like 3/4 tracks and then the rest is some hinterland between not-quite-interesting-enough to exactly be IDM, but not dancable even on the level of that last Mouse On Mars record, but more imaginative sonically still...

Frustrating. I like 'Rock On' now though, but it seems to be a highlight :(

frickin' username (fandango), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:42 (7 years ago) Permalink

Probably one of the best albums I've heard this year. But what like what spastic heritage said, it's a bit too long (Radiohead-album-length syndrome). Still good shit though

van igloo (van smack), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:48 (7 years ago) Permalink

+

= ???

I bought it, still going to get filed under "permanent indecision" I think! ROCKS LIKE A BASTARD when it feels like it which is all the way through, but in completely unpredictable, irregular fits and starts. It doesn't drag for me particularly, except on the bits when the song is over but it requires another 30 seconds to trickle away. I do like it though!

But yeah, 7/10, promising debut etc... but I'll probably only like it as much as that Ark album when the novelty wears off. Neither are close to Top Ten of (my) year.

Merry Christmas (fandango), Friday, 23 December 2005 19:38 (7 years ago) Permalink

lol @ the "blogosphere" reference in TV Dogs! And yeah, this is just hella good FUN. It's not deep, and kinda refreshing for that. Okay 7.5 then ;O)

Merry Christmas (fandango), Monday, 26 December 2005 01:38 (7 years ago) Permalink

This is definitely the most addictive album I've heard all year. I hear Venetian Snares on heavy sedation, which slows his pace of music down to something more enjoyable. There are some slightly "novel" moments on the album, but nothing that will lose its appeal, and he has moments where he falls on a quality melody (Hard Tits). I'm on the bandwagon with this one.

Surprisingly I'm still regularly listening to this (well 2/3 of it basically). Whoever talking upthread about heavy this is OTM. 'Fast Life' or 'Arpeggio' at high volume are unbelievable.

Baaderonixx immer wieder (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 13 June 2006 07:58 (6 years ago) Permalink

fully agree. kinda felt like this album didn't get as much recognition as it deserved, however, if he could make a whole album of utopia/rock on/arpeggio tracks that good, then he'd be really golden

if it didn't have the stupid track with the kid talking or the mike ladd thing this album would be perfect. as it is, it's still very good.

i never quite "got" him. As with a lot of modern post-IDM stuff, it's interesting for a while and then it gets too much. I'd have probably loved "Smash" if it had come out in 1998 though.

()()()---()()() (internet), Saturday, 6 January 2007 16:27 (6 years ago) Permalink

It's WAY funner than the kind of post-IDM that got quite a bad name for a while (not sure what you're thinking of dog latin but do you mean hyperactive/spazzed-out DSP stuff like Kid606, Tigerbeat etc?). Much more party-rock-excess minded than geekily impressive. I think I'd have rated this far more highly if it had come out this year, with less competition.

There's a nice interview with him in the Slices DVD that came out around June... I get the feeling dude takes life pretty easy, I'll definitely be excited to hear what he does next too.

Basically can't stand his last album, though on first impression I found it passable. Migraine inducing.

jimn (jimnaseum), Saturday, 6 January 2007 21:54 (6 years ago) Permalink

I liked it a lot initially and was super psyched from samples I heard on bleep. After listening a lot I lost interest and I guess the novelty wore off, but I still come back to it from time to time. It just sounded so immensely fun when I first got into it!

I feel the same way about the stuff out on Ed Banger right now like the Sebastian and Mr. Flash stuff. Lots of fun to listen to, and makes me wanna dance.
