Tired irony or totally legit?

Rollo Hazelgrove (Rollo Hazelgrove), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:48 (eighteen years ago) link

Is this his doom metal band? Read about it in Skyscraper.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 16:58 (eighteen years ago) link

i havent heard it, but crow has always liked metal and messed with the form.

Dr. Walter Freeman (Grodd), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Rob really loves metal.. so it's not ironic, at least. It may not be serious, though. Then again, neither is Optiganally Yours or anything else Rob has done, aside from mostly Pinback -- where Zach of 3MP, a usually more macabre songwriter, is his musical partner.

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:07 (eighteen years ago) link

then again, Pinback lyrics are usually pretty silly too, if you read the lyrics.. even the Zach songs. Any band that ends their latest "hit" song with "I'll miss you.... but not in a Slint way" can't be humorless.

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:08 (eighteen years ago) link

It's clearly not doom metal, except for the cover art and a few odd snippets. More of a Pinback-meets-buttrock affair... sludge pop maybe. Truly hard to get a bead on.

Rollo Hazelgrove (Rollo Hazelgrove), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:10 (eighteen years ago) link

Of course it's silly. He was in fucking Heavy Vegetable ferchrissakes.

Also, it's more fun to listen to than Pinback.

Also, also it reminds of the also goofy but kinda worthy Goon Moon record.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, but should anything purporting to be doom metal be "fun" or "silly"? Isn't that kind of betraying the cause?

Rollo Hazelgrove (Rollo Hazelgrove), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:21 (eighteen years ago) link

Shoud Rob murder some Christians first or something? I don't get your statement. "fun" or "silly" is up to the listener, not the artist. Mayhem can be as serious as they want, but that's not going to stop many people from taken them less than seriously.

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:26 (eighteen years ago) link

"taking".. sorry

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Genres are made to be broken and cut apart for reuse, which Rob always does a fine job of in music.

Dr. Walter Freeman (Grodd), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, Rob is currently working on recording what will probably be the one and only Alpha Males record, which was his hardcore band before breaking up not too long ago. Mike, formerly of Charles Bronson, is/was also in the band.. as he was also in Holy Molar, which was basically Mike with most of the Locust in dentist costumes.

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:41 (eighteen years ago) link

When you name a band "Goblin Cock", and commission cover art to match, you are intentionally being silly, there's nothing subjective about it--you want people to know it's (at least partially) a joke. I'm wondering if the humor doesn't end up belittling a form of music that is too often snidely dismissed, or worse, ironically "appreciated" in hipster music circles.
Isn't appropriating the imagery and attitude of death metal for what is essentially a pop product no different from what Vanilla Ice did with hip hop, at least in a broad manner of speaking?

Rollo Hazelgrove (Rollo Hazelgrove), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 18:09 (eighteen years ago) link

..and the crime is?

I mean, was Junior Senior argued to be a "belittling" of party music when they released their album?

I really don't get the whole belittling thing here. Bands cannot control how their fans and listeners will ultimately perceive them.. (yet)

donut ferry (donut), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 18:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Also the Rob Crow:death metal::Vanilla Ice:hip hop analogy is just wrong on so many levels. I don't know where to start.

Clap Your Hands Say Goblin Cock

Truly the best immature band name ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 23:00 (eighteen years ago) link

rob crow already did comedy doom metal when he did "krishna on the ledge" with heavy vegetable. so now he's doing it more hamfistedly it's more serious?

I've let friends who are into the doom stuff hear some mp3s and amazingly the reactions have been positive. Which is most unusual for anything i ever recommend to them.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 6 October 2005 23:29 (eighteen years ago) link

The song in that video sounds more like Weezer than anything else... I like! :)

sean gramophone (Sean M), Monday, 17 October 2005 19:41 (eighteen years ago) link

The video is really funny. Just a smidgen less classic than Optiganally Yours' "Mr. Wilson" video, for Rob Crow in videos, but still classic.

Just seen the video at http://www.wormwoodfilms.com/movies/goblin_cock_2.mpg and its really funny.

Is "Stumped" (the song in that video) representative of the rest of the album, or is that them at their most accessibly poppy?
